Aww...I was hoping it'd be a Lee/Kirby era X-Men movie.

Which, if it were based on the Jeff Parker comic series, is what we'd have. This cast has zero resemblance to Parker's series.

Those are some random choices for characters.

I guess the Hellfire Club is going to be the villains...maybe?

Yeah, I thought it looked pretty bad. I was hoping it was a joke, but it seems legit at this point.

Photoshop! I think.

And really! Do we need the demon Azazel? NO!

Also, forget them wrecking all the comic book continuity, they are messing up their own movie continuity! geez

James McAvoy is a fine actor and could do a good Prof. X but .....

The film-makers could try as hard as they liked and still not do anything like as comprehensive a job of "wrecking all the comic book continuity" of the X-Men as Marvel have managed over the past few decades.

Yeah, those costumes look a bit...well, a bit poo, but these early-release photos of superhero film costumes tend to, to be honest. Aside from Iron Man, I can't remember a recent superhero film where I looked at the early costume photos and thought "yeah, that's perfect" (I actively hated the Batman Begins suit, for example), and that didn't stop several of the films from working out just fine.

As yet, though, I've got no reason to expect much of anything from this one. Perhaps I'll change my mind when I hear something a bit more substantial about it, but a rather awkward-looking cast line-up isn't enough to catch my interest.

I am shocked to find myself interested in an X-men film after the last 2 (3 really but number 2 is a guilty pleasure).

Choosing to set it literally a year before the first X-men comic was released could well turn out to be a masterstroke.

I agree. That looks a lot better than it has any right to. Maybe they learned the prequel-thing from the success of Star Trek?

Looks like a good film from the trailer. A movie with McAvoy in it is always worth giving a chance, IMHO. My only gripe is my common complaint about superhero movies: power levels. We've got a youthful Magneto (apparently) lifting whole battleships out of the sea. A bit much, surely, given his youth and previous displays of power? Is it consistent with how Magneto of that age has been portrayed in the comics?

It's up there with the "moving the Golden Bridge" in X3 (which I was prepared to forgive because

a) it's obviously a strain for him, and the other characters have the decency to be awed by the extent of his capabilities

b) he's had a lifetime to master his powers

c) it's a minor complaint compared to the rest of the movie being so shit).

It's the same in the Superman movies - lifting a car / helicopter / plane doesn't seem as easy as it should once you've seen him lift an entire new continent or turn back the fucking planet.

I am shocked to find myself interested in an X-men film after the last 2 (3 really but number 2 is a guilty pleasure)

Really? I'd easily put X2 up there in my top 5 superhero movies.

Isn't it supposed to be a reboot?

I mean that's Emma Frost in events meant to be taking place before Wolverine.

Hah, even the release date is 6.3.11 (to use the American parlance).

And yeah, I enjoy the hell out of X2 but I don't think it's a great film. Sure is fun though.

The movie continuity has nothing to do with the comic continuity.

Choosing a reboot using Azazel, a character from one of the most godawful stories ever told in comic books period (not even just X-Men comics, mind), wouldn't be the best of ideas.

It looks to be a prequel.

I really really hope Azazel doesn't follow the comic. Hopefully he will just be a mutant that, due to his demonic appearance, takes a code-name of a demon.

Want to bet at some point in the movie they imply that him and Mystique will hook up?

The movie continuity has nothing to do with the comic continuity.

I meant the movie of wolverine, clumsily titled X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It had Professor X in Patrick Stewart mode rescuing a teenaged Emma Frost, all occurring sometime after the Vietnam war. This is set in '62, with Xavier younger and Emma Frost older.

Unless the teenaged Frost had a clone. She has clones doesn't she? This is why I don't read X-Men.

Oh, I didn't see the Wolverine solo movie.

No, Emma Frost doesn't have clones in the comic. I think you're thinking about her proteges, the Stepford Cuckoos...identical triplet girls. One of the neater concepts from Morrison's run, in my view, an homage to Wyndham.

They were originally introduced during Morrison's run, but there was a really bad mini-series (Phoenix something or other) after Morrison left the book which I didn't read which had something to do with the Stepford Cuckoos as clones. I don't remember all the details, but it sounded very bad, and got very bad reviews.

The retro 60s thing has huge appeal to me. I didn't know they were going to put it back then. Until the trailer, I had just assumed modern reboot. But will non-comic X-fans (fans of the films not the book) flock to a X-film sans Wolverine? Assuming Wolverine is the most popular X in spite of his horrible origins film, it seems like a gamble to make X-Men minus its star. It's like watching the Lakers play with no Kobe. Or Star Wars without Vader. It's risky. And XMFC looks a shitload better than Thor, which looks awful.

Kobe = Wolverine ? Therefore Kobe plays for the Magic, the Knicks and the Rockets! All at the same time as playing for Lakers

See, I was kidding with the clone comment. Now I really don't fancy reading X-Men.

You know what I learned from that trailer?

Not just anyone can pretend to wield the power of magnetism and make it look dignified. I quite like Fassbender, but he's no Ian McKellen when it comes to intensely gripping at air.

The Lakers are the only team I know. I'm not much of a sports fan except for playoffs.
