songs that remind you of hellblazer

Ade's made a few excellent Hellblazer-themed mixtapes in the past - as a result, Eels' 'Cancer for the Cure' and XTC's 'Dear God' always remind me of Hellblazer.

I can think of a fair few myself. At the moment (off the top of my head): When I'm Dead and Gone (McGuinness/Flint), The Card Cheat (The Clash), I'd Rather Be The Devil (John Martyn), Great British Mistake (The Adverts), Hellhound On My Trail (Cassandra Wilson), To Hell And Back (Venom).

Bit of Pogues as well, for some reason. No idea why that should be...

Pretty much anything by Tom Waits.

Building a Mystery by Sarah McLachlan-I can't help but think of John Constantine when I hear the lyrics.

Cross Road Blues by Robert Johnson-I think it should be self-evident.

James has already mentioned Mister Brown's keen ear for a Hellblazer tune - the opening six tracks on what might've been his first stab at a Constantine compilation nail the feel of the title perfectly...

1. Dear God (XTC)

2. Heart Of Darkness (Sparklehorse)

3. Mersey Beast (Ian McNabb)

4. Heart As Big As Liverpool (Peter Wylie)

5. Fear Loves This Place (Julian Cope)

6. London (Noonday Underground)

To add my own,

, care of Oasis.

"The Cure - Torture" reminds me of the end of Azarello's run.

"Bowie - I'm afraid of Americans" Highwater

"Marilyn Manson - I put a spell on you"

"Smashing Pumpkins - Cherub Rock"

"Wolfsheim - Find You're Gone" with respect to John's romantic life prior to Piffy.

"Killing Joke" - "The Raven King" and "Pandemonium"

indeed, Ade's fantastic mixtapes hit the nail right on the head.

other songs that remind me of HB:

dEUS - For The Roses

Goblin - Sighs

Grinderman - Heathen Child

Serge Gainsbourg - Requiem Pour Un Con (requiem for a bastard)

I'm a bit surprised nobody's mentioned Richard Thompson: Walking On A Wire, Shoot Out The Lights, Wall Of Death and I Feel So Good all seem suitable...

Which reminds us all of Thompson Twins, and that immortal tune which should always remind us of our John, namely Hold Me Now.

Remember? The Neil Gaiman written issue?

Suffer Well by Depeche Mode

Black Celebration by Depeche Mode-I get the Arcane trilogy from Moore's Swamp Thing tied up with this song, as I remember driving the back roads late at night listening to that tape at the time I was hunting down Moore's run on S.T., but really, I think the song fits HB better.

He was about to red card you. That means they have to fly you home. Just say you live on an exotic island and get free air passage there.
