HBO hears word, brings 'Preacher' to small screen

HBO has seen the light and is bringing "Preacher" to the small screen.

The pay cable network is developing a one-hour series based on the popular 1990s Vertigo comics series. Mark Steven Johnson, the writer-director behind comic adaptations "Daredevil" and the upcoming "Ghost Rider," is writing the pilot, while Howard Deutch is attached to direct. Johnson and Deutch will executive produce along with Michael De Luca, George Agusto, Chris Bender and JC Spink.

"Preacher," which ran from 1995-2000, told the story of a down-and-out Texas preacher possessed by Genesis, a supernatural entity conceived by the unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon. Given immense powers, the preacher teamed with an old girlfriend and a hard-drinking Irish vampire and set out on a journey across America to find God -- who apparently had abandoned his duties in heaven -- and hold him accountable for his negligence.

The series was created by Irish-born writer Garth Ennis and British artist Steve Dillon, who will serve as co-executive producers. Ken F. Levin, who reps the duo, also will serve as co-exec producer.

The series -- which developed a rabid fan base -- was known for tackling religious and political issues, its dark and violent sense of humor and its observations of American culture. It also was one of the series that helped define Vertigo, the adult-oriented line of comics from DC Comics.

There have been several attempts to bring the comic to the screen, whether big or small, but nothing stuck. A movie version, to have been produced by Kevin Smith's View Askew, among others, got to the casting stage, with James Marsden attached for the title role and a reported budget of $25 million.

The project reunites Johnson with Deutch; Johnson wrote "Grumpier Old Men," which Deutch directed. Deutch's directing credits include TV's "Gleason," the pilot for "Melrose Place" and the 1986 film "Pretty in Pink." He is repped by ICM.

This is stellar news if it's true, but last August, Ennis shot down the rumor once and for all, in his words. I posted a link here somewhere to a radio show he and Darick did in promo for THE BOYS in which he said there won't be a PREACHER series or movie so that he would stop being asked that question (like Warren Ellis, he's been burned more than a few times on people wanting to make PREACHER into a live action production--Ellis and Darick have been approached about TRANSMET 9 times without any fruition--including including twice by Sony).

Warren Ellis says on his site that Garth confirmed the series to him in an e-mail.

I don't know, dude.  My fingers are crossed.  This could be awesome.  They would have to make TREMENDOUS departures in order to make it bad.  But we all know how that goes....
"I think I could turn and live with animals. They are so placid and self-contained. They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins. They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God. Not one of them kneels to another or to his own kind that lived thousands of years ago. Not one of them is respectable or unhappy, all over the earth."

They could "just" have the series go easy on God, and not have Genesis be the child of a demon and angel.  And not have the lower order of angels be less than perfect in health and form, and snort coke.  And not have the inbred descendant of Jesus.  And not offend the Catholics with Father D'aronique. And not have Starr's organization be a religious one (the Grail, wasn't it?), etc cetera.

I'm truly hoping they don't fuck this up in order to appease a bunch of christian bigots who wouldn't want to see it in any case.  Maybe with the entertainment media starting to show a willingness to deride rightwing fundamentalism over the last 5 years will come the guts to stick to Ennis's vision.

As long as they have the beautiful interaction between characters (and find actors who can do the characters well) and address how people would react and deal with extraordinary situations (one of my favorite parts of Preacher) then it should be fine.  It would be nice to have, but they don't really need stuff like the sex detectives, Jesus DeSade, or Odin Quincannon to make an engaging story.  They do however need to keep the AllFather of the Grail.  That stuff was hilarious and I'll be sad if he doesn't make it into the show.

If the show did dispense of Jesus DeSade, the Sex Detectives and the other one dimensional homosexual characters and not any of the other one dimensional Christian characters wouldn't that be HBO pandering to the "bigoted Homosexual agenda" or is it alright to be equally offensive to religious people, homosexuals, Irish alcoholics, vampires, art students, and those who have sex with Armadillos?

I'm thinking the beastiality will have to be implied rather shown. I don't think HBO is that daring.

i just read the news that the vertigo comic preacher may become a series on  HBO.
maybe this is the way hellblazer should go. this way they could do all the profanity, nudity, and voilence an horror  that the comics have.
also they could do the character as he should be...british. maybe tim wroth for the part?
