So, are there any specific Suicide Squad comics people would like to recommend for me, to get in the mood for the film?

(Seriously: very consistent for a comic.)

Do they exist in trades?

Sorry, scratch that, apparently they do, in fuckloads. So to reiterate my question: Are there any of them I should pick up first? I'm not going to read 100s of comics here.

I do believe the movie lineup is based on the newer post-DC-reboot series, if that helps any.

Apart from the huge John Ostrander run from the '80s and early '90s, if there's a collection of the short lived Keith Giffen series (from 2001, a dozen issues) that's worth a look. It has sod all to do with the film, though.

As for the proper stuff, I'd suggest that all four of the collections of that are worth a look. They only go up to about #30 because they're padded out with issues of other comics that the stories crossover with. This is actually a plus for once, as the first collection of the Ostrander series has all of the set up stories that were published elsewhere before Suicide Squad#1 came out.

As Kate says though, the film looks like being based on the stuff from the last ten years, with Captain Boomerang's son instead of the original poorly dressed old fart who's dead now (I think: comics character's often recover from that).

WB gave us the most cringeworthy Lex Luthor i've ever witnessed. If they drop the ball with Joker and Harley , i'm fucking out. I have faith in Jared and Margot, though.
thanks to john constantine , i'll now wear trench coats, smoke and drink constantly, talk in a british accent, get a sting haircut, fuck lots and lots of people, start a punk band, piss off people on a daily basis for shits and giggles, and literally piss on vampires and trick demons into curing my cancer.

like a BOSS.

Is Joker part of SS, or is he the villain?

It would seem an odd choice to make him a member of the Suicide Squad, although promotional material seems to imply that he will be a member. I thought it was a bad idea because he's too big of a name villain, has been featured in other movies from DC, and since he has never been a member in the comic books.
Maybe DC thought they needed a big name villain to draw in more fans?

A search online seems to reveal that he will not be a member of the Suicide Squad, although I'm not sure he's meant to be the actual villain either.

Knowing what I know of the Suicide Squad, he'd be a good way to get the gang together.
Also nice short-hand for "Here's a bunch of villains you never heard of".
I hope they have him playing along for a bit.

And then spinning off into the Batman film.

That's sort of how I heard/read it. While not a member of the squad or the villain he pulls the strings to make things happen from Arkham. Or something like that.

One would think that putting an insane criminal genius in your group might seem like a bad idea.

How about they manipulate him to do it and then steal his gang off him with candy?
