Well there's Bride of the Reanimator and the rather remarkably good Beyond The Reanimator. The latter following directly on, over a decade later, as Herbert West is incarcerated after the first two, and (of course) begins to experiment on his fellow convicts. It features a reanimated disembodied penis.

When the solicitation & our discussions identified Cheryl as the probably Hellbound one, I'd observed that she would not be likely to go to Hell after she died, so this way makes sense, and it's almost certainly a trap.
Although I like the idea of Nergal protecting "his" nemesis (while sneakily fucking up his life via the Chas thing as much as any of the kids have done - other than the Cheryl thing).
Finally for now, I really do not like Camuncoli's art.
Someone said upthread, the brooding Chas scenes needed something else ...

One of my favorite Gianni works is the illustrated "Strange Tales of Soloman Kane" from Wandering Star. Amazing. Man, I'd break into a clan meeting in black face to get him to do an issue of Hellblazer.

I guess your covers just look like covers and not just wildly inaccurate teaser images from what lies within.
One day I'll get to one of these US convention things and meet up with some of the good folks off the internet ! (We're getting as far as NYC in May, but only plan half a day of visiting the comic shops of Olde New Yorke Towne.) Hopefully we can get you to Bristol 2006 - if the Hellblazer and Alan Moore panels I have been involved in go well enough.

It's excellent.
As Kris said, one of the best films of last year, combining the British version of Guy Ritchie films (sic), a sense of humour ("IT'S A FUCKING ELEPHANT!") and some genuinely moving pathos.
I'll be buying it and copying it to DVD for a friend in the US, so might be able to assist anyone in the US, perhaps a "round robin" copy that gets passed around the VfB forum folks.

Considering the Conservative Christian bent that pervades the film, it wouldn't be out of place, would it? Satan's all things evil, right?
Any association of Peter Stormare's Satan with "gay" comes down to the viewer's prejudices rather than anything in the film. It's probably the whole "european actors" = "camp villains" thing that's going on with Hollywood for the last twenty years. ;-)
But John's comment is taking it one extrapolation of prejudices too far.
Not least because the film's concepts of redemption, heaven and hell and Satan are just plain old christian, rather than "conservative with a big C" (clever pun intended).
Other than the suicide=damnation matter that the film mis-handles, which aspects of the theology would you say are Conservative ? Rather than basic catholic law.
I would like us to differentiate between the political movement of politicians using (their) religion as a method of control (big C) versus those christian-folk who want their religion to not move with the times (small C). There is a difference.
At least in the often-exposed hypocrisy stakes.

If the bloke doesn't want to say "the studio fucked up" because, you know, he might want work in the future, but he is prepared to say what he was saying when Kris quoted the punchline above, I think there is slack that could be cut here.

Mark pointed out the use of the film was an assault on "women as victims".
You postulated that Mr Carey had forgotten that "the empowered woman" was (becoming) just as much of a cliche.
Several people commented, as you noticed, on your use of the word cliche (especially as you were suggesting the writer did not consciously juxtapose the two "cliches".
You denied the negative connotations of the word.
To answer your possibly rhetorical question, yes, you can use reverse cliches to attack cliches for political gain. The extremist version of this sort of action is so-called" positive discrimination".
Furthermore, let's look at the story.
The set up is that the boyfriend is going to kill Gemma.
They watch a film full of cliches about women as victims which Gemma comments on.
AT THAT POINT in the story, the reader is invited to take two perspectives:
(1) Mike Carey is about to set up a satirical comment by having Gemma overcome the very cliche that she has observed in the film ...
(2) Ooh, Gemma is being so cocky and the same thing is about to happen to her! ...
With the benefit of hindsight and previous knowledge of the way Mr Carey works, most of us went for option 1, but either way would have been in keeping. The latter has already been dealt with in Wes Craven's post-modern horror series, Scream, but it would not have been out of place here.
Except that I am pleased that Gemma is maturing into Kid Constantine.
Oh and I was speaking against the school of thought that one can criticise a story for being cliched because it has an aspect that has been used before. Or that you can select that aspect out of context and say that it is cliched.

Well, everyone is jumping the gun because I used the word CLICHE (collective GASP), which is a clear example of how mass media exposure to words makes one immediately conjure an image based on popular opinion.

The word cliche has always had perjorative meaning.
In the absence of the sort of development you are now adding to your statement, your original comment was negative. Nothing to do with "mass media" or any other way you might seek to patronise those who responded to your comments.
(Note the use of certain perjorative terms in my previous sentence.)
If the "woman as victim" is a cliche - employed because it contains many assumptions as a result of most of our societies' gender roles - then it can be assumed as over-used. Therefore, any attempt to address those assumptions will by its nature become over-used for a while, but the end result is that "cliche" becomes less common and we get a more accurate balance of the way people act in stories V the way people act in real life.
For me, a more important use of the term cliche in respect to this story is to say that Gemma's behaviour is cliched Constantinian behaviour. But that's about the story not about the mechanics of the writing.

As was mentioned earlier, it seemed like she was turning into a "plot-device" character (how do we get John to be become invovled in the storyline? Oh, I know, Gemma is in trouble and he has to rescue her! This device has now been used twice in Carrey's run).
Nah, just in Red Sepulchre, surely? In the latest storyline, John was already involved before Gemma became a target, and in the end she proved to be more than a match for Simon.
In Bred in the Bone she carried the entire plot on her shoulders. In Staring at the Wall she played a similarly strong, proactive role. She appeared briefly in Out of Season, when she tried to contact John. And yes, she was killed in Happy Families but that wasn't real.
One of the biggest regrets I have about Mike finishing so soon (!) is that I won't get to see any more of his John/Gemma interaction, which I find to be one of the most interesting things in his run. I hope Mina decides to take on Gemma as part of her cast when she starts her run.

Lest we forget, even Luis has grown to see that Gemma's depth has increased since he habitually misread Red Sepulchre - either that or he's just changed his mind randomly (which I doubt). I'll repeat for the new people: If you go looking at actual human behaviour that is employed by a writer within a story, you will always find it being used as a plot device. However, you should not merely go looking for such mechanics if you wish to enjoy a story. When you look at a painting, do you first examine the brush strokes and the frame ?
To claim, as Christian did, that Gemma was "the empowered woman overcoming her misogynistic attacker (which) is just as much a cliche by today's standards" is heading towards suggesting that you can't have people in stories because they ALWAYS have people in stories.
Regarding the "Women in Refrigerator" nature of this arc, when EVERYONE is getting killed, there's only so far you can avoid offing the ladies.
This is - after all - coming soon after that Sue Dibny murdering thing that was going on in the DCU. It is clear that Cheryl's death is not to be treated so shallowly. And as most people have pointed out, Mr Carey has not so much foreshadowed (or misdirected) the so-called misogynistic* murders of women as set up a great big neon sign with an arrow saying "comics cliche about to be subverted".
*yes, and Basic Instinct is homophobic because of the way it portrays female murderers. <irony off>

That's probably because her novels are about very dark and emotive subject matters (abuse, sociopathy etc) whereas the concept outline for her arc that we've seen so far is less based in realism.
