  1. Definitely wasn't expecting a Clarice origin a bit here but then I remembered this marks 25 yrs since she first appeared under Ellis to where she (along with Map til 3 yrs ago and Watford) currently is the long serving recurring character. Sucks for her vampire but on the bright side, she's taking the death much easier compared to Albert's. And goddamn it woman, puts some 'spect on Swampy's name!!!

☠️ at Noah talking about Nat's tits. Lucky for him she's not yet verse in sign or she'd deck him

Si Spurrier and Aaron Campbell return with a vengeance, and this issue picks up perfectly after Issue 12 of their original run - if you read DIA # 1 right after Sandman U #12 it wouldn't feel like there's a three year publication gap between issues.

I'm presuming that Zombie in LA at the beginning is John after his current condition has worsened...

It always goes back to LA, doesn't it? Whether it be pisspoor Batman demos, Aztec Gods, here

John Constantine…faith healer? Disguised as a Catholic priest in a small town near the Texas-Mexico border, John searches for the connection between how a dust-ridden county turned out a massive harvest and Dream’s missing sand. But this good-natured, all-American town has an ugly secret…one that brings John, Nat, and Noah face-to face with monsters of a very human kind.

Didn't Marvel tell Morrison to fuck off back to DC after they decided it was either Morrison or his former mini me around the turn of the millennium and felt that they'd rather work with Mark Millar instead?

Has Morrison done anything at Marvel in the last twenty years?

    That explains it...

    *sigh* Goddamn it, Quesada

That's true, I was forgetting that bit.

Isn't he wearing a leather during the flashbacks in that fill in Gant vs Gemma story as well?

(Mind you, the less said about his dress sense during the underpants and magic mushrooms issue, the better...)

Only his dress suit digs (and a vest with it of all things

    Point taken.

To be honest, I thought it was a shame that the build up to the big climax of Carey's first story involved John dumping the donkey jacket he'd been wearing and digging out his trenchcoat...

And ends up in another one while dealing with amnesia per Rosacarnis. Looked better when Manco drew the leather jacket

In the Delano issues he'd be wearing a suit and no trenchcoat as often as not, at least if he wasn't crawling around in the gutter.

Maybe the slobby/scruffy John was Ennis' lasting legacy to the character?

Re: scruffy- His, Jenkins, Azz, Mina, and Milligan.

Carey more or less followed in Delano's footsteps far as our John being trenchless or just wearing a black/red/blue turtleneck with the coat or a field jacket

A new John Constantine thread and the year not even a week old, whatever next!?

This was mentioned in other threads but I picked up a digital copy of Constantine : Distorted Illusions for a couple of euro through a Comixology sale last night.

Think Hellblazer as a young adult fantasy romance title like Twilight where the leads are all young, good looking folk who are DTF and aren't too bothered about the junk their latest conquest is packing.  The climactic action scene features a cast of characters that Garth Ennis would create purely to have traditional John rip the piss out of but that more enlightened minds might simply describe as fabulous.

This wasn't aimed at me so so unsurprisingly it's not for me, I thought they did themselves a disservice by

giving young Constantine a more traditional look

at the end there though.  Art's got a real Jamie McKelvie vibe to it, pretty to a fault so also not my thing, I want dark and gritty from the script through to the inking, walking parody me!

I remain surprised that 'Constantine' has a market value outside of old school Vertigo fans, I mean presumably it must for them to release this in the first place ?  I don't mean that to sound like a criticism of the work but they must have stuck 'Constantine' on there cause they thought it would help sales or perhaps just to try and 'reframe the IP' ?

I would love to hear about people reading and enjoying this who then jump into Original Sin or Dangerous Habits say!

    Would read another one by-the-by.

The biggest disservice is having him look Spike-esque

Azarrello's metaplot was confusing (or pointless, according to taste), but the attempt to do something different and showing Constantine acting like a total bastard wasn't too be sniffed at. Whatever can be said against this run, there's a few decent stories mixed in with the doggy porno and daft conspiracy, and Frusin's best art on Hellblazer, which makes up for a lot.

Bad Blood was, read with a critical eye, a story strung on a set of even dafter assumptions than Azzarrello's. Doesn't mean it isn't great fun, but if you're not having Doglick or Batman, why are you having a tale that assumes the sanctification of a dead Royal?

The BKV Swamp Thing was an interesting failure. Treating Tefe as the lead and her dad as an irrelevance was one of the few things that hadn't been done to deathtried since the early '80s, so it was worth a shot. Pity the end result just managed to find a new setting for most of the historical faults of post-Moore Swamp Thing comics (worthy but dull ideology informing every plot, whinging angst junkies passing hemselves off as deep and insightful characters, internal monologues that read like excerpts from the diary of a teenaged girl who's read too much Sylvia Plath, bullshit conspiracies that make no sense, to name but a few...)

Looking back on Bad Blood now, we're nearly there but it was half right on the right string but wrong yoyo or in this case, wrong prince

    Spoilers ahead, capn'n!

Something bad, a very crap piercing, something else bad, she got hold of a magic bat gun that shoots spell darts loaded with holy water or some damned thing.

    No.

Sort of, for a bit. It didn't stick, and she got her old one back again.

Less food than had happened to Angie.

The crisis finally caught up with John, and he was rebooted. The series ended with a panel showing the much older looking Silver Age John looking unhappy in a pub.

*laughs in Si Spurrier circa 2018* "I got plans for that codger..."

I hadn't realised (or maybe had just forgotten!) that they're replacing John with Johanna in Sandman - looking forward to seeing how they pull that off.  Hope our boy Andy Diggle gets a few quid for his work on fleshing out the character way back when!

Internet scuttlebutt does seem to suggest that "There Can Only Be One" so Constantine had to go from the CW as he's set to appear on HBO but then aren't DC about to go all Multiverse in the upcoming Flash movie ?  Obviously Marvel are building up to this in their cinematic universe after already doing so in Loki on Disney+ and of course Into The Spiderverse was a massive success.

Since Discovery is on a culling spree, JJ may be ditched and his own plans for our John goes with him along with those crappy mystery boxes

Bit odd that Constantine is being written off the show, but Ryan's sticking around to portray an OC.

I wonder if this is a case of WB/DC once again going with the "there can only be one!" adaptation mindset, considering how there's an HBO Max Constantine in development by JJ's company and John hasn't been confirmed to be part of the Netflix Sandman adaptation yet either...

If so, it's a kind of mindset that seems to be applied only when the powers that be feel like it, considering they seem to have no issue with two simultaneous live-action Flashes (speaking of, the upcoming Flash film will have both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck returning as Batman while Robert Pattinson stars in his own Bat-film while Iain Glen portrays Bruce Wayne in the Titans series)

If Gaiman mulliganing ancestor Joanna into a reincarnated life in the 21st century 's to go by, the Jar Jar Abrams show's still on.

Then again, Warner stay making half-assed embargoes for two decades now

  13. Re: Noah....

Either he was conceived between Ellis and Azzarello's run or Spurrier finished Carry erasing the latter's Bat Audition of a run entirely. Plus when he lost his voice and his mom going coma bound, this had to happened either during Mina or Diggle's tenure. Had to be or the rape grandchildren of Nergal would've gotten them like they did the likes of Helen, Albert or Straff.* Same for Mako or the First

*Sorry, Carey. No Ed Brubaker style Uno/Phase 10 mulligan for Momma Strathern for you. She's not Holly

  14. So....

Not only Noah is John's but a certain long since absent half Elemental offspring has a half brother now

    .

This is where we need to make our voices heard to Marie Javins (only thing good  going for her right now is she's not You Know Who).

The ending pretty much is perfect to where we know there's more of our boy if the telecom demon formally known as Ma Bell would let us have more instead of foisting more YA and JLDark down our thorats. Hell, I'll take more as a season basis like the Invisibles and Sleeper even

Isn't John boy noted as a bareback rider? He wouldn't need the diabolical infestation in his spunk to burn through condoms if he never uses them. I know that Veitch had Abigail worrying about that in his run on Swamp Thing, and birth control never gets mentioned during any of the sex scenes, iirc.

Yup. And not one time did Zed, Kit, Dani, & Angie* ever brought up rubbers.

*Yes, I exluded Phoebe and the Blue!Clara Oswald (i.e. Epiphany) and there's a sound reason for that

Geography is a big factor on why I didn't really try to keep following the series after it kept getting renewed, but the constant cancellations sure didn't help.
Thing is, Hellblazer has always been a series where an author takes over for a while and then someone else takes charge and takes it in a different direction, but there's not much they can do with a run that goes on for 24 issues max.

The saddest part is that those 12 issues spent on that Djinn plot end without us ever getting to see this mystical Djinn city because they had to pawn the book off to someone else. Honestly at that point, I'd be like "let someone else take over but actually finish" cause I remember the succeeding 12 issues were kinda forgettable.

And 0 resolution to the missing Abby Holland either. Shit, I found Seeley's 3 parter (#13-15) more memorable than what he wrote later and Kadrey's short stint

  17. Re: the reveal at the end-

The red fellow might not be the real Lucifer. If he is, then the story is indeed in its own bubble away from what we're accustomed to

    Also

The glimpse of Thomas and Mary Anne could easily sync with the NBC series' brief description of how our John's birth came about. How Thomas looks here will take getting used to since I've been so used to how he looked in the Delano and Jenkins era that I fan casted David Bradley (don't

    @ me)[/Spoilers]
