  1. My editor Lou Tambone and I are pleased to announce that our upcoming HELLBLAZER essay anthology will feature a foreword by none other than HELLBLAZER's creator himself, the incredibly talented Jamie Delano. Lou and I are ecstatic to have Jamie (who, it turns out, is one of the nicest people around) in the book, and we're grateful to contributors James Wilkinson and Draško Roganović for helping us to make this happen. (Jamie's name will be added to the final cover, of course.)
  2. Oh, thanks! I had forgotten they were regulars here--I'll update the original post. 🙂
  3. Hi, folks! I'd like to announce a new book about John Constantine's history in comics and on the large and small screens, coming later this year. Special shout-out to group members Ade Brown, Draško Roganović and James Wilkinson, who are in the writing lineup. This is a project I'm quite proud of, and I hope to be able to release the gorgeous cover image soon. My apologies if anyone views this as spam! --Rich Handley * * * FROM BAYOU TO ABYSS: EXAMINING JOHN CONSTANTINE, HELLBLAZER Edited by Rich Handley and Lou Tambone Cover by Leah Mangue Coming this year from Sequart Research & Literacy Organization Essays by Ade Brown, John E Boylan, James Chambers, Julianne Clancy, Nancy Collins, Brian Cronin, Joseph Brandt Dilworth Jr., Sabrina F, Richard Gray, Robert Greenberger, Rich Handley, Robert Jeschonek, Ross Johnson, Matthew Levine, Martín A. Pérez, Draško Roganović, Frank Schildiner, Tony Simmons, Lou Tambone, Kaz B. Towner, John Trumbull, James Wilkinson, and Genevieve Williams In a universe populated by heroes and villains clad in colorful, tight-fitting outfits, you might not expect a chain-smoking ex-punk rocker wearing slacks, a tie, and a trenchcoat to stand out among the rest. Yet when British occultist John Constantine showed up in Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing run, that’s exactly what happened. Constantine’s arrival elevated Swamp Thing profoundly, and it wasn’t long before John had his own spinoff title, Hellblazer, which outlived its parent series and spawned several onscreen adaptations. Quick with a quip, hesitant to involve himself in others’ lives yet often compelled to do so, Constantine has a weakness for narcotics and alcohol binges, an unnatural obsession with the occult, and a long list of lovers he’s betrayed, hurt, and discarded. John has slain his twin brother, taunted Satan, outwitted demons and angels alike, been trapped in Hell, and even fathered an elemental. Through all of this, he has somehow managed to come out on top, though his loved ones have usually ended up caught in the crossfire. Edited by Rich Handley and Lou Tambone, the editors of Sequart’s Somewhere Beyond the Heavens: Exploring Battlestar Galactica, this volume examines the mage’s history from his earliest appearances to the present — not only in the pages of Swamp Thing and Hellblazer, but also on film and television. Essay contributors include Swamp Thing scribe Nancy A. Collins, Constantine TV series writing assistant Matthew Levine, former DC Comics editor Robert Greenberger, and a wonderful lineup of other talented comics historians. At times, John Constantine can be a complete bastard. He has questionable hygiene and a lack of ethics, and he’ll likely hurt anyone foolish enough to let him into their lives. But John is nonetheless a hero — well, a Byronic hero, in any case. As fans, we wouldn’t have him any other way. http://sequart.org/books/57/from-bayou-to-abyss-examining-john-constantine-hellblazer/
  4. Same here. For me, Hellblazer is Ennis and Jenkins. Those two runs stand out FAR above the rest. --Rich Handley
  5. Thanks! I'll alert my LCS to add this to my pull list.
  6. Henceforth, I shall always call him the Grey Pilgrim.
  7. Sadly, it's a dog-eat-John world out there.
  8. Unfortunately, it isn't complete.
  9. Hi, everyone. I was hoping someone here might be able to help me. I'm trying to make sure I have every Swamp Thing and John Constantine appearance from 2011 on (that is, ever since the Flashpoint/New 52 reboot) so I can read them all in chronological order. Here's what I know of so far, but I suspect I may have overlooked some stories. If anyone knows of anything missing from this list, I'd be grateful if you could please let me know. 10. I love Bermejo's artwork on this story, but the writing? Woof--Azzarello's mangling of the British voice and terminology continues.
  11. I recently re-read the entire pre-New 52 runs of Swamp Thing, Hellblazer, and Books of Magic as research (that was a LOT of comics), and I was reminded of just how poorly I feel Milligan handled Constantine as a character. Sure, he had some interesting plots--particularly "Suicide Bridge" and "India"--and the bit with John obsessed with cutting off his offending thumb was pretty damn funny. But his tenure was FILLED with inconsistencies with prior writers' runs (his use of Beano comes to mind, for instance), the artwork didn't work for me at all, and Epiphany remains my least favorite love from John's life. Zed, Marj, Angie, and especially Dani and Kit were all so much better characters, yet Milligan tried so hard to get readers to buy into the idea that this 23-year-old kid was somehow the love of 60-year-old John's life. Plus, to make things even creepier, he had Epiphany fall in love with him at age nine! It all made no sense and was, in my opinion, the second worst era of Hellblazer, after Mina's run. it's a shame, too, as it DID have some good stories and some solid moments from time to time. But it just didn't jibe with all that came before. John cleaned up his act at the end of Carey, rid himself of his Golden Boy and Ravenscar baggage during Diggle's run, and then... went right back to dressing like a homeless guy and spending all his time getting stoned for no good reason, despite all of his prior character evolution. And that ending? Ugh. That being said, re-reading all of Swamp Thing, Hellblazer, and Books of Magic in chronological order was a pretty damn amazing experience. I highly recommend it, as it allows you to get a much better picture of how things all fit together (or don't). --Rich
  12. Thank you, John. I really appreciate your saying that. ? --Rich
  13. This is extremely helpful. THANK YOU!
  14. John! Hey, how's it going? I'm still kicking around. :)
  15. Thanks! I completely forgot about that site, which I used to find extremely useful. :)
  16. Hi, folks, Some of you might remember me from years back. I used to post here regularly and also used to run a website called Roots of the Swamp Thing. I took that site down long ago and stopped reading Swamp Thing and John Constantine comics, but I've decided to get back into them again. Does anyone here have a complete list they could share with me of all Constantine-related appearances since the start of the New 52? If so, I'd very much appreciate it, as my reading these stories will also double as research for a book I'm writing. Thanks in advance. :) --Rich Handley (info@hassleinbooks.com)
  17. Azzarello's run started out so promising, with John in prison. I was immediately intrigued. However, as the storyline progressed, it quickly fell apart. After that opening story arc, it soon became apparent that Azzarello simply didn't understand the character or the series, as John was reduced to a grinning bastard who brought bad luck from town to town, and never seemed to give a crap about anyone. In every way, that was not John. The final several story arcs were very weak, and by the time John shagged a dog, I decided I wasn't even reading Hellblazer anymore. The series had nowhere to go but up after he left. I was so glad when Mike Carey arrived.
  18. Ellis' run did nothing for me, though he DID create some good characters that Carey used to much better effect. "Shoot" was his best story, in my opinion, but even that one was ill-conceived and had a message that, at best, made no sense and, at worst, was rather offensive. Each time I re-read Hellblazer, I find myself thinking "Meh" to his run. "Love Street," as well as the other Sandman/Constantine spinoff, "Marquee Moon," I quite enjoyed, but "Trenchcoat Brigade" was just AWFUL. Despite being a sequel to Gaiman's "Books of Magic" and Len Wein's "Swamp Thing" run, it was badly written, weakly drawn and boring--in every way inferior to both of its progenitors. Darko Macan's two-parter, on the other hand, was great, I thought--moody, thoughtful and not overplayed, which is just what the story needed.
  19. A sloth with herpes would do a better job than Milligan.
