It's not the way he'd sound based on the comic - less Liverpudlian, more Welsh - but that isn't a problem for me. Assuming he gets the rest right, which is hard to judge from a couple of isolated snippets, I think it'll work.

This show would be better suited for AMC or Showtime where they can show the gore, nudity and all other adult stuff that the comics have shown.

Hi you lot. I think the prevailing feeling here is cautiously optimistic. Which is how I also feel, naturally. It looks like they're incorporating a version of Astra, which means we could get a version of Newcastle, which piques my interest. That and the mention of his soul being bound for hell makes me hope they'll have a crack at doing the Critical Mass storyline. Which further leads me to hope they'll try and adapt and incorporate some of the better arcs of Hellblazer interspersed with whatever their ongoing take on it is.

Showtime (like HBO) think they're too good for comic adaptation. They turned down a 100 Bullets TV series, for fuck sake!

Asking someone if you can in this, or that event, save your soul, isn't getting necessarily excited at the idea that you might be able to save your soul. I liked the humour and the attitude, in parts of it, and it seemed a very assured take on John..

Doesn't look like something I'll stick with, but of course it's too early to tell yet.

I have all my fingers crossed it will be at least watchable. Not holding out hopes for something REALLY GOOD. If it's an OK show, I'll be happy. I like the character well enough that a decent portrayal on-screen will satisfy me.

So, outside of stupid magic...which has nothing to do with characterization...You,re saying the this John is MORE amoral and an anti-hero than Vertigo John.

You can read what I am saying, as it is conveniently located in the post above.

But no, just to spell it out in terms that you and I have often agreed upon in the past, the John Constantines of the Hellblazer Universe have rarely been amoral.

As for your comment on our mention of "stupid magic", well I'd say there's a gulf of difference between a character who can shoot electrickery from his hands and one who just *tells* you he can. That's the difference I'm talking about.

In the clip, Constantine stands with fire in his hands (undecided) and does demon throwing (using a Carey-esque incantation of mish-mashed styles). We have no context yet.

He's usually been motivated by what he sees as the common good. There are fewer anti-hero actions in the DCU version, because he is either anti or hero and inconsistently so. The reasons for accepting him as an anti-hero include insights we don't have room for in the Justice League of Dark spin-off series we have seen so far.

And for now, the trailer could be quoting Constanteen out of context, so I will reserve cautious disappointment for later.

Well, so much for the complaints that John in the DCU was going to turn him into a PG kiddy version of John.

I'd rather see an asshole, unlikeable John (which, at least, has precedent with Azzarello and Milligan Hellblazer) than one who talks about Heaven and wants redemption.

I would not defend Constantine's characterisation using Milligan.

No sir, that's CRAZY.

I think I like it? It's got more traces of the film than I'd like, but it's also got an actual John Constantine in it. Some of these mannerisms definitely feel right, but overall I've always read John as far more laconic than this - he seems almost hyperactive in a few scenes here. It wouldn't surprise me if the trailer-folk chose those bits because they're exciting, but we might need someone on set to slip him a few downers. Or to just be a downer. Bum him out.

That's a really good summation of where I'm at with it, especially this...

It's got more traces of the film than I'd like, but it's also got an actual John Constantine in it.

Even if it ends up to be total shit that gets canned after a couple of episodes, I'll probably get at least one or two scenes of a John Constantine look-a-like sneering at some supernatural nonsense on film!

First thing I said to my girlfriend was: "They kept him British!" I guess I missed that in the news. I'm not sure how I feel about it off that one trailer. I'm going to give it a watch for awhile and see what gathers from one season. If anything it'll be good to have some kind of incarnation that is closer to the comic even if it is a little watered down.

I chuckled at the last line, too.

Our boy already making a good impression, the Hollywoodreporter are live-blogging NBC's up-front presentation to advertisers....

12:19 -- The promo for Constantine, based on DC's Hellblazer, is a little graphic, and some of the crowd don't seem to know what to do with it. There's an obligatory applause but more than a few shaking their heads.

There's only one way to fix this...more Christianity and less gore!

I wonder if they'll have him act like Dr. House MD only with magic and demons and other supernatural shit.

I'd like to see him use less magik and use more of his actual wits and cunning to outsmart his foes.

Seeing that post about advertisers' reactions made me think: it's probably a safe bet that the show's not going to have any countercultural stuff or obvious societal rantings either, which'd make a pretty huge difference to the overall thing, and also explain the preponderance of monsters-and-magic and other horror tropes. Harder to rage against the machine when you're trying to please it.

I mean obviously the comic itself was never some underground socialist pamphlet, but it was always pretty explicit about the fact that everything is terrible, and that this is far scarier than any of the ghosts or demons. Aside from the ECT stuff (itself a horror trope), I don't get any of this from the trailer. Good humans vs evil demons.

Yeah, I got the distict feeling that the ECT scene was there simply for shock value. It seemed over the top to me.

There will probably be evil people too, but probably the ones that are using black magic and involved with the evil demons....and I don't mean the Yuppies from Hell either.

They mention John as a "master of the black arts", but I see a lot more about John as an exorcist. Sure, John did an exorcism every so often in the comics, but being an exorcist was hardly a big part of Hellblazer.

Just realized that the trailer came out after Constantine's birthday.

Oh wow, nice pick! :D

Also means I came THIS CLOSE to re-reading 'Shot to Hell' on John's birthday, which would've been an amazing bit of eerie.

Instead, two days late. Or possibly just one, depending on timezones. Sorry John, I'll make it up to you next year. Promise.
