Constantine: The Hellblazer Relaunch

Recommended Posts

Well fuck. I was pretty much on the edge of quitting the title. Now I have to see if this is going to stop sucking.

So many things to be concerned about. Riley Rossmo is great.

The only Ming Doyle I know was that Desperate Gangster Wives thing the kitchen.

Hopefully this is better than the previous Constantine title.

Seeing as they are using the Hellblazer title and hiring a Vertigo writer I'm wondering if this book will be closer to the old Hellblazer series.

I'm guessing Dark Universe is replacing Justice League Dark.

We should open a book on the first crossover, Constantine technically made it to #2 but we'll be generous and say that it was actually #5 when it was part of the Trinity War.

My money's on Constantine : The Hellblazer #3 being part of some multi-title crossover shite.

Mine is on #1 being part of a universe wide thing and an appearance by the Constantine of the Brighter Universe in something unrelated before the year's out

James Tinion IV is co-writing.

Glad to see DC are still giving the co-writing thing a go after last time.

DARK UNIVERSE and HELLBLAZER: CONSTANTINE are the books with which @mingdoyle and I are re-imagining the entire dark corner of the DCU

On the one hand, hopefully this will mean something more creative done on Constantine, as the creators seem like DC is going for something different here.

On the other hand, Ray Fawkes really isn't a terrible writer, as shown by his creator owned work.

Moving back to the first hand, outside of all the stupid cross-over shite, the Constantine plots weren't that bad. If they were just written in a less straightforward manner the book could have been much more enjoyable.

On the other hand, I don't think there's anything very positive you can do with DCU John Constantine as long as he carries such a horrible back-story, so hopefully DC jettison that with the big event.

Staying on that hand, the book being called "Constantine:THE Hellblazer" keeps my trepidations. It's not simply sub-titled "Hellblazer", it's saying that John Constantine is a Hellblazer, whatever the hell that is.

I am glad that DC will continue to publish a Constantine comic book, really. Even though the New 52 version has been a horrible misfire, I really didn't want to see John Constantine totally off the stands. Hopefully, DC has learned from all the problems of the "New 52".

All I know is the backstory better be back to how we all know it other than the bland unrelatable cack of the New 52. Then I'll read it.

here's an idea. why don't DC use a longtime fan or a collection of fans who know more about their title than they do. this "panel/board of expertds" would have the power of the pen to redact everything that sucked and filter through only the good stuff.

That looks remarkably like a haunted trenchcoat

Yay! The worst story in the entire existance of John Constantine, and like the haunted trenchcoat of the story, it just won't die.

I would not read that.

Too much burned by the internet "experts"

What if you were one of the 'experts"?

Based on this site for the past couple of months, I feel we'd end up with a year long story-arc debating bisexuality....

To be fair, I don't think the sentient trenchcoat -idea- is a complete dead loss. There's potential for cuteness.

It's just really not a great opening gambit. Between it and the DCU bollocks, there's a lot of crumminess weighing down on any potential excitement here.

I'm glad there's a woman writing it, though; I hope she does it well. And if we can then at some point have a Scot do a good job with the character, Denise Mina won't be the circumstantial flag-bearer for both camps anymore. Because she butterfingers'd that flag quite a lot (which still baffles me). And hey, just to continue playing the "let's classify everyone" card, the last time someone with a gratuitously Irish surname took over the character, it gave it a nice shot in the arm. THESE PATTERNS EXIST. THEY EXIST AND MEAN MUCH

Apparently Ming will be co-writing with James Tynion IV, whom I also know nothing about, but who has a great name. Ming Doyle and Riley Rossmo are also pretty great names too. So at least there's that.

If you're Milligan (or Steven Moffat)

Yes, I think DC chose the most interesting names they could come up with for the book.

OK, Ming Doyle also did artwork on Mara (Brian Wood Image mini-series). The art was pretty good, different. The writing fell apart as Wood lost the plot-thread, but we can't blame Ming Doyle for that.

Umm...Irish surnames? Yeah. You're forgetting Milligan, after Ennis.

James Tynion IV does not create confidence for me. I haven't really read much by him, but DC kept seeming to pair him up with Scott Snyder. Nothing I've seen from him has interested me. I fear that, like Lemire, the book will drop to Tynion alone within a few months (ok, so Constantine somehow almost improved after Lemire, somehow, it's true).

Rossmo alone is reason enough to get me to buy #1, as Proof is one of my favourite comics.

I'm not sold on the idea that the infamous "haunted trenchcoat" is returning in this story. It might be artistic license and meant to represent something totally different. Until I see the synopsis, I'm not going to lose hope. That idea seemed very Milligan, as he used it to better effect during his Shade series. I think the idea just fell so flat in HB because Milligan never quite figured out that things that might work in Shade were unfit for HB (not the only problem of Milligan's run, but part of).

For our sake, lettuce prey Tynion IV gets assigned to another book before they cross that bridge.

The major problem with the coat story was its sentience. If it had simply shown the coat reaking havoc on those who came in contact with it it without the coat's "inner dialog" it could have been a decent story. As it is though, that idea has been ruined.

Also whenever i see the name James Tynion IV i think he should be ob the bridge of the Starship Enterprise.

Maybe they are just going to do "No, THIS is a haunted trenchcoat".

But actually it's just a sketch rather than anything directly to do with the comic.

Do they realise that "Constantine The Hellblazer" is a clunky name?

Well, it wouldn't be promoted as such. it would just be our little secret.

Are we debating bisexuality or are we debating it as it defines a human being? They are totally different to me.

Speaking of which, I wonder what sort of paper this series will be printed on?
