The Vertigo Thread

Though I think Mark is imagining the sexist bit

He sees sexism in everything, that boy.

"Sexist" is maybe a bit much, but I really did find the portrayal of transsexualism irritatingly clumsy, patronising and unconvincing, while Hazel-the-gobsmackingly-stupid-lesbian is without doubt the least convincing character in the entirety of Sandman - which, given that the series includes werewolves, fairies, talking animals and rogue gods, is quite an achievement. I think he was aiming for charming naivety with her character, but missed the mark by miles. The whole book relies heavily on Gaiman's ability to write convincing female characters, and...well, he doesn't, particularly. Not here, anyway. It's not 'sexist' per se, but it does read very much like a male author trying that little bit too hard to prove how sensitive and feminist he is.

I agree with Sethos about Endless Nights, by the way - it may not be up to the standards of the very best Sandman stories, but it's a more than worthy entry into the canon. The art is, indeed, particularly glorious.

Well it had me ducking down in my seat anyway

It does look ace, but looking at the background to the story it got me wondering what the feeling is like within the anti-government militia circles over in the US at the moment. I'd presumed (probably mistakenly) that even if they weren't exactly in hogs heaven, they'd be a lot happier with life under the 2nd term of Bush and his corporate cronies, than they were a few years back. Or do they hate his global corporate/invasion agenda as much as the anti-capitalists, just for different reasons?

The art is dead good, not familiar with the guy but it's got a real Brian Wood flavour to it so works with the story.

Too bad that dialogue is full of poorly written cliches. I guess in the future everyone talks like they're in a cheesy action flick.

Brian Wood apparently does detailed layouts and someone else does the full pencils and inks for this book.

"I disagree. some of them are really good, some are not so good. the Death, Dream, Despair stuff is great, I thought. and the art is uniformly fantastic."

I disagee again, Sethos.

The Death story is good.

The Despair story is fine, but there's nothing really to it.

The Dream story is no Dream I have ever seen before! It's like Gaiman completely forgot about who the character was!

If you are talking about art, then hell yeah, "Endless Nights" is a masterpiece, but I never judge a comic on art. I don't have an eye for art. There are some artisits I really love and others one I really hate, but I cannot say that a comic has ever been made or ruined for me based around the art. The art is just something pretty for me to look at.

Lost-Just read a good book on that very subject, actually.

The militia groups are not right-wing nor left-wing. They just ARE. They're an unusual extension of American society. They hate us Commies and they hate the right-wing Capitalist pigs.

You might get some Nazi sympathiers in militias, but you're just as likely to get someone like the "Unabomber", who hates the Capitalist system.

I'd say they are a group of paranoid people, driven over the edge due to the fact that they want to be involved politcally in society, but the American people excludes the people from politics.

Truthfully, when I was involved in the field of psychology, we pretty much said that the militias are made up of people who feel just like the Communists, the Socialists, the Green Party, the Labour Party, but who don't have a place in the intelligentsia. Elitist? Maybe, but fuck it!

Some of them might be for Newt Gingrich, but not Bush and not Nader. You know?

And there was me thinking they were all a load of pig-poking hillbillies

It's not out of the realm of possibility that people would talk like that: think about how obsessed with pop culture most of the world is. Remember when that "shizizzle, my nizzle" bullshit was going around? People still think talking like that is cool. Here, after Pulp Fiction came out, everybody started saying 'nigga' all the time and quoting lines from the film (dubbed "PeeEffing or PFing). So, with western culture devolving into sound bytes and mindless music and GTA:SA, and 2 Fast 2 Furious and people STILL talking like Beavis and Butthead, would it really surprise you to see that kind of culture happen?

I got Volume 2 and 10 of the Sandman today. That leaves 4 and 7 and 11 missing in the 1-11 Sandman series.

And remember the hard bound I couldnt remember? Well, it was Neil G's "Creatures of the Night". Of course I read it already. Well, it isnt part of the series, isnt it? It had 2 stories but the one I liked (which I already read in NG's short stories is "The PRice", the one about the black cat. It didnt end in the same way, but twas pretty good.

The bookstore also gave me free tickets to a book fair (over here that would include comics) for next week so I think I will mosey on over there next week.

And yes, I have managed to keep off books 9 and 10 - for now.

Everytime I look at the sealed novel, I seem to hear a chorus of voices ... going "Not yet. Wait."

Wow, this Vertigo thread was buried way back here and forgotten. I guess it has to do with all the great Vertigo titles.

I would drop y-last man if it wasn't going to end soon.
