Poison Elves anyone?

Recommended Posts

So I'm sick of getting blank looks, has anyone else ever read Poison Elves? It's a dark fantasy title by Drew Hayes (No, no relation whatsoever to Elf QUest unless you count Hayes making fun of Elf Quest in most of his introductions). It has very dark amazingly done artwork, although occasionally confuses the action.

Not the best storyline, but a good example of the art.

shhh....I'm trying to be nice and keep friends! :icon_lol:

I just can't stand fairies and elves and unicorns and wicked witches and little boys who are magicians all of that in comic books anymore (or film or books for that matter)!

I just get really sick of Fantasy really quick. I like Michael Moorcock's type of Fantasy (is more sword & sorcery mixed with speculative fiction I'd say anyway), I like Neil Gaiman's Fantasy most of the time (because when Neil does STRAIGHT Fantasy, he usually doesn't take himself too seriously)....the rest of just grates on my nerves!

Funny, that's part of the reason why I love Poison Elves, I always enjoyed Drew Hayes' rather cynical, dirty, pissed off view of the fairy tale world. I enjoyed watching Luse try to dismember the Purple Marauder at every turn...

As for being nice, refrain from flogging dead horses or throwing temper tantrums and we should be good :icon_confused: (I know, I know, that's supposed to be confused, but they don't have a good sarcastic smile...)

Can it possibly be better than that fantasy classic "16 Naked Fairy Chicks"?

"What the fuck have you been buying" were Mrs Atticus's words when she saw the cover of my copy on Saturday morning.

After having a quick look inside, the words "disgusting" & "pornography" were uttered. Along with "those can't possibly be fairies!!"

I managed to make it ok by telling her I hadn't actually bought it, and I blamed Mike Carey, trafficker of filth

Sticky, sticky, sticky.

Poison Elves?

Goth-tastic.

Is it edgy?

Hmm, edgy...

Well it started in 1991, the guy payed for the printing himself (and sold countless issues out of his home 'cause most stores didn't carry it) and it managed to stay alive and later thrive until he decided he was done with the series... Edgy (in the Vertigo way that you REALLY want to imply) isn't the first word that comes to mind. It's fucked up, dysfunctional, violent, angry, sarcastic, occasionally sadistic, and in my opinion funny as hell, but I'm not willing to call it edgy 8-)

I REALLY wish I had a scanner...

Sounds "edgy" to me.

In my mind edgy has to try harder, although some of the basic elements are the same. However, I think this is turning into semantics. Suffice to say I'm not sure if you'd like it, but in my opinion it's a hell of a lot better than some of the shit Vertigo's been putting out recently :)

actually, I bought the first couple of issues of Poison Elves that came out from Sirius a few years ago, and it was ok. it's was a pretty original take on the fantasy genre, with a killer elf assassin being the main character. more punk than goth, I thought. the only problem I had was with the art, which was a bit amateur in places. way too much crosshatching in places, which made it look extremely messy. but the story was quite decent.

(not being an artist and therefore just going for "ooh shiny") I was always intrigued by the art, right up until you got to a fight scene. Then it tended to get even more confusing than Manga :( Here's a knee, here's sombody's foot, here's a lot of hair... Still, I love it :)

The only thing I've ever heard of this book was the trouble Bendis got in with this Drew Hayes guy. Its in that Total Sellout book of his.

Jesus I can't remember. It went something like this. Bendis had a fan write in something like, "Who would win in a fight. You or Drew Hayes?" Bendis, not know who Drew Hayes was, said something like, "I'd make him my bitch." Turns out Drew Hayes is a big scary goth fucker and came up t Bendis at the con and scared the shit out of him. But it was all jokes and then they had an insult war in their letter pages or something.

That is all I know about Poison Elves and Drew Hayes.

hahaha, that does actually sound like Hayes, yeah, I remember reading some of the letter columns in those Poison Elves issues I did have and they were very "either he's gonna kill himself or somebody else". And I always think of Goldfish's buddy in Jinx when I think of Bendis. as well as the incident with him shooting some reference pics for an AKA Goldfish comic and getting busted by the cops for waving a fake gun at a friend. :D
