That damn ConJob/Potter fanfic...

Recommended Posts

...has got me obsessed.

Contrast these this fanfic with the "HARD TIME" arc.

The Hard Time arc shows what Johnny is capable of in an enviorment with NO innocents to hurt. He clawed himself to the top of the heap, and created his own Hell on Earth.

In the Potter Fanfic, he's in a world with no heaven or hell...no demons, no angels...those folk are free from divine/infernal interference. A world of innocents, where he doesn't have The First, the Host, or whatever con that John pulled years ago and forgot about that is waiting to blindside him. He is respected and given a chance to actually do some good.

Without the Shadow of Heaven and Hell and a clean slate, can john actually do some good without creating a problem that will bite not only him, but all who are close to him in this world on the ass?

I can't believe I'm getting so drawn into a bloody fanfic...Jeezus, I've tumbled so far down the ladder that RP Gamers and Buffy fans should be taking my lunch money now...

I have no idea what this is about.....but I can take a stab at the question:

"Without the Shadow of Heaven and Hell and a clean slate, can john actually do some good without creating a problem that will bite not only him, but all who are close to him in this world on the ass?"

I believe that John would become apathetic and "normal" in such a world. He'd find no purpose and blend in with the other people in such a world, content to live like everyone else, as the restraints of dogma and propoganda no longer exist. It is also the tragedy and the mistakes of his past that define who John is, so he'd also be a completely different personality type. Less the Socialist and more the "addict", I'd assume.

Interesting analysis of "Hard Times", by the by. I never quite saw it in that light, although I never think too deeply on Azzarello's arcs (even the good ones like H.T.). It's quite obvious when you put it that way.

I find it remarkable that you of all people would think that if you remove Heaven and Hell there'd be no dogma and propaganda. Do you really think that's so?

As far as I know (first film only) the Potterverse has Good and Evil to contend with.

And human nature has been part of what Constantine has had to contend with since day 1 - consider the Yuppie story with no demons just yuppies - it would still work, perhaps on a more realistic level.

Taking your beloved addict concept, if you remove magic he'd find another addiction - indeed his bug could be simplified to fighting authority (from either side). He'd probably get his colleagues locked up by engaging them in ill-advised protests and the like.

I guess I misunderstand the context of this thread. I've never read "Harry Potter" and think of it as some magical wonderland. Is there government in "Harry Potter"? Social classes? Marxism? Capitalism?

Heaven and Hell are the ultimate authority figures in Constantine's world. In our world, removed of religion, we'd be left more readily with class issues. Of course, the racial/national divide would still exist to distract the masses.

If we are referring to our world (minus religion) I'm not sure how John would react actually. I can't see himself throwing his time into one political party. Perhaps he would turn his addictions towards reactionary revolutinary activities.

I've always felt that John feels powerless against "real world" issues involving the suprastructure. He's politically aware, but yet throws his time into magic.

Without the distraction of Heaven vs. Hell, how would John react?

I'm guessing since we are talking about "Harry Potter" stuff, that magic would be an even more real power in the question addressed.

Homelessness, famine, poverty, disease, corruption, greed....these are not evils that John can fight with magic.

Christian - I said this when you were comparing recent issues of Hellblazer to Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and I'll say it again here.

Please stop making groundless assumptions about things you've never seen/read. Nine times out of ten you'll be wrong, and it only causes confusion and/or misunderstanding.

I said I just wanted to take a shot at the question.

At least I don't argue for pages and pages about how much something sucks only to admit that I've never heard of it at the end (I'm looking in Rosa's direction!).

I dont know how far you have read into this fanfic but it john seems to be the same old john in the potter universe as he is in the DC universe. There are both good and evil sides in the potter universe. Example is Voldemort, who is clearly the evil in this world and who seems to already have a grudge against John, if for no other reason than that he is the new Defence Against the Dark Arts Teacher. (John also has a grudge against Voldemort now, since he blew up his pub :icon_evil: ) He has also stated in the fanfic that he may have been indirectly responsible for that attack on the pub that nearly killed Mr. Weesly because he has a tendency to get those close to him killed.

So in sort, no. John will make enimies wherever he goes just cause he is John Constantine.

BOOOOO!!!!

Don't mess with Gaiman's "Books of Magic"!

Yes, I know all you say, inca. Rosa and Rogan live with me now. I don't let them use my computer though.

Rosa says that whatever we are currently talking about is "a travesty to all that is good and decent in the art world and should be burned".

If any other Forum members want to move in with me, just let me know. I must warn you though, I've run out of beds or couches, so you'll have to sleep on the floor.

Is there a "John and the Chocolate Factory" story I don't know about?
