Help Me Make a Birthday List

Recommended Posts

Definitely Optic Nerve. The tone is just what you're looking for, and moreover the art is gorgeous.

Goodbye Chunky Rice is quite upsetting, and plotwise, is unresolved. Well worth a read, but best if you approach it without first absorbing the hype.

What about Gaiman's Signal To Noise?

Sorry to flog a dead horse, but everyone should read The Tale of One Bad Rat.

EVERYONE should read "Signal to Noise"!

You must be new here, eh? It's well known that I'm obsessive in my need to hunt down and own every Neil Gaiman story ever written. :)

It was my favourite comic ever written until I read "Jimmy Corrigan". Now, I am torn. "Mr. Punch" was tied with "Signal to Noise" on my list though, so it may be tied for #1 or #2 now.

How many "Optic Nerve" Trades are there? I ordered 3. That seems to be all that are listed on Amazon.

there's Sleepwalk, Summer Blonde... what else? 32 Stories are Tomine's mini comics, of varying quality.

Have you got One Life, his Moorcock-related one shot with P Craig Russell? Or did you want scans?

I have the short story it was adapted from.

Sethos-Yeah, I also ordered the 32 stories book.

So, I guess I bought them all!

there's also the big collection of odds and ends by Tomine, Scrapbook, featuring some of his short comics he did for magazines, as well as tonnes of illustrations for newspapers and stuff. it's hardly essential stuff but cool nonetheless.

can't remember if you read any Love & Rockets...?

I'm the one who HATES "Love & Rockets"!!!!

OK? Are you happy? I said it!

No, I'm not a fan of "Love & Rockets". Everyone loves it in the entire world except me, but I just can't see the appeal....

Oh good! I'm not alone!

RE:Hernandezes

They haven't written very much have they, outside L&R?

The mini-series they wrote for Vertigo, "Grip", was unreadable.

How about "nothing" from "nobody".

that's what you should ask for because that's all you get! (If you're lucky!)

I think they have. Luba, and a few other titles, some or most of which may have been of short duration.

I'm making a birthday list and then buying everything I want for myself and signing other peoples names on it and acting surprised when I open them on that cold, lonely Feb. morning.

"You'll never guess what I got you Christian. You're going to be surprised.

"Whoa! No way! I always wanted this Graphic Novel. Thank you so much!

"You're welcome, Christian.

Christian is sad now....."

Luba pretty much is Lov & Rockets though. after L&R vol.1 ended Jaime and Gilbert just continued with their own series featuring the same characters. and now they are slowly coming back into the fold of L&R vol.2. but since Beto works about twice as fast as Jaime, he still has Luba kicking around (as well as his new GN for Vertigo, Sloth).

and Christian: you have no taste!

I can't call "Tale of One Bad Rat" depressing. I love the book, but I found it to be very life-affirming.

No, I'm not knocking it because of that!

You should read it, Selkie. I think you would really enjoy it.

The circumstances which caused her to run away were very dramatic and sad, and I think there was a point when the outcome seemed like it couldn't end well. I was going to suggest this but if it's "life-affirming," more power to it and you--that's a good thing, for sure!

Is that sarcastic or did you forget which thread you were posting in, Sethos?

Spider-No doubt there's plenty of sadness in the story.

Christian, it's both funny and sad in its views on the rest of the world (the main character is an artist doing cartoons for porn mags). I think you'd enjoy it.

This is as good a place as any to say I don't like L&R either. Maybe it's a cultural background thing, but the writing just leaves me cold. Nice art though.

I bought the first issue of Grip out of openmindedness. That copy is for sale on eBay Australia even as we speak. :)
