Family Guy Comics Yea or Nay?

Recommended Posts

It's a good TV series, but part of the humor is the delivery. I'm against a comic book version.

File it in the future cut-out bin along with the Married With Children comics from the mid-90s.

In fact are there any television-to-comic adaptations which are as good as their source materials?

Off the top of my head I can think of some of the mid-80s Doctor Who comics by Grant Morrison and Jamie Delano with art by John Ridgeway which were not horrible.

I'm guessing there have been some good Star Trek comics in the past 40 years.

There's a Shield comic out there but I've not read it as well as the plethoria of Simpsons comics.

I'm sure some good ones exist but I can't think of any at the moment.

Hate, hate, hate the show - derivative, unimaginative, lowest-common-denominator pap which, even more crucially, isn't fucking funny - so I can't see myself being interested in a comic version.

What what???

I love the show...I like that absurd, non-sequitir type of humor....

I love it. Not for any artistic greatness or particular comic mastery, but just for the disconnected wallpaperishness, and the occasional (usually at least once per episode) presence of a laugh-out-loud, "Jesus, I can't believe they did that, the sick fucks" moment. It's undemanding, in every possible way, that's what I like.

However, I don't think it'll work even remotely as a comic.

Thats exactly what i love about the show, the whole "Jesus, I can't believe they did that, the sick fucks" part...it makes happy to see that sick fucks like me arenot a minority, hehe.

Anyway...the "you have aiiiids" episode was brilliant

I agree with Mark in that I think the show's unfunny - it always takes the lamest, most predictable route for a joke - but I don't loathe it to the same extent that he does.

Cracks me up nine times out of ten, funnier (by a country mile) now than the Simpsons is too.

There was something on Newsarama about the comics, think they're being written by the same guys as the cartoon. Possibly.

But I am bitter and hate-filled, apparently. So that's only to be expected.

Well once could be passed off as just a off the cuff remark, twice could be passed off as maybe coincidental but three times.............hmmmm.

The only way I can see the comic working is for it to make no attempt to be like the show. I suppose it could just regurgitate scenes from old comics just as the show does with movies and tv shows. I'm sure the first cover will have Peter Griffin dressed as Batman or Spiderman. But that kind of humor gets old fast just as it does on t.v. Beside the show relies so much on short attention spans that attempting to ape the show wouldn't really work in comic format.

Agreed, although if they just didn't try for the same brand of humour it might work.

No.

Free Comic Book day happened last year and the only thing at the time that looked interesting (hey, I knew nothing about what was out there back then) was this Bongo comic sampler with Simpsons and Futurama. It was eh.

It depends on what they do with the medium. I think it won't fly.

I watch/listen to Family Guy whenever someone else flicks on the TV and I happen to be in the same room but otherwise don't really care much about it. It has its clever moments and references but it's not something I am going to be trampling over people and furniture to watch, although some of my friends fall under that category.

I've never attacked a small child to watch it, but I think I have clubbed a midget to death with a leg of lamb to see it.

I would rather buy hairy fat guy porn than buy a family crude comic book... I think the only bright pot on the show is only stewie and dog but thats it...
