Garth Ennis Loves Superheroes and Soldiers and Lesbians

Recommended Posts

It is - and the hardback is only £11.99, which is pretty good considering it's from DC.

The thing is that I actually find the team dynamic stuff quite interesting, but the bollocks about fucking cats and hamsters up the arse is just so completely pathetic that it puts me right off the thing.

That and the series taking five fucking issues for a Boys/superheroes throwdown.

Issue 7 wasn't particularly offensive, but it wasn't particularly rewarding either. It was pretty dumb and kinda padded, which seems to be the way comics are going these days. I'll give issue 8 a miss.

Come down and beware of the APEFIST!

Tom, now do you understand my sickness? My much lamented health issue in 2005 is now immortalized with me...

For those who are scratching their heads, when I spin, my DJ 'handle' is "APEFIST the DJ." I also use 'apefist' as my nick on a few forums (though, Incer pointed out to me that there are some pretenders out there posing as 'apefist')--but I am the one true fist of the ape! And issue 7 of THE BOYS is the greatest issue of any comic ever with the possible exception of HELLBLAZER #214!

I geuss I would be the only one who will say that I like this series. I find the juvenile, yeah it is so what, humour a riot. All of it expcept for the borderline homophobia, although that's nothing new for Ennis. I was giggling like a boy at church with a porno in the hymnal at the "cat fucking" scene. Speaking of that it's interesting that it's being called the "cat fucking" scene since there is no cat fucking taking place. But oh well I like sick, depraved, sophmoric humour sometimes.

Now i haven't actually read it so I'm in no position to comment at all really, and everyone is completely entitled to ignore everything i have to say (nothing new there) but i am being put off by the fact that every snippet or review i see gives me the impression that this is Ennis-by-the-numbers, that sad fact is that the most interesting work he's done in the last 5 years in on the Punisher and no one seems to be paying that much attention.

So while the stuff designed to give 13 year olds boners gets all the press i guess that's what he's going to keep writing.

What's even sadder is that by all accounts he's really into The Boys (fnaar) and thinks it's one of his better works.

I dunno about that - Punisher has consistently high sales (I believe it has a good many more monthly readers than The Boys, although I'm not 100% sure about that), and just about every critic/commentator who I have any time for at all has been saying exactly the same thing as you pretty much since the MAX title started. It may not be hyped to the eyeballs the way The Boys has been (although it's worth noting that very little of the hype surrounding The Boys - which really is every bit as crap as you've been told it is, and you don't need to bother investigating further - has had anything to do with the quality of the writing, but rather the content and related publishing problems), but it's still a popular and highly-regarded comic.

I honestly dont mind if there's something like The Boys (Which I have not read in it's entirety yet) which allows Ennis to consciously or unconsciously distill his...umm Ennisisms into, thereby sparing his Punisher title.

That said everytime a character like The Barracuda(Who's incidentally back for #50) surfaces, so do my fears.

Anyway, hands down The Punisher has probably been the most consistantly great title I collect.

If he pushed just a little further it would be a masterpiece.

So if having The Boys keeps The Punisher on the straight and narrow so be it.

An interesting perspective Rhone.

And speaking of Baracuda - have you read his mini? It's sort of crap. Actually it's really crap. First of all Baracuda shouldn't even be alive and second of all it's just the kind of crap Ennis shouldn't be writing.

How's his Ghost Rider series with Clayton Crain? Any good? Has Crain been able to get his absolutely gorgeous art in on time?

Yeah Supposedly he survived being shot point blank and then eaten by great whites. He's basically the Ghetto version of The Russian.

*end spoilers*
