PREACHER: The HBO Series..?

I have to disagree with that, at least if they did a straight translation of the story.

Pilots and season ending cliffhangers usually have higher budgets, so theoretically with a higher proposed budget for the first installment, you could still follow my outline. Of course, I'm partial to it...

Here is my pojected cast when I thought it would be a movie. Probably would have to change as a TV series with mostly unknowns with a few knowns:

Jesse: Billy Crudup

Tulip: Naomi Watts (or Allison Mack)

Cassidy: Tim Roth

Saint of Killers: Lance Henrikksen or Scott Glen

Arseface: anybody

God: Robert Deniro

Herr Starr: Patrick Stweart (not just because he's bald, but because that's who I had in mind from the beginning)

Featherstone: Felicity Huffman

Hoover: Don Cheadle

Sherriff Root: R. Lee Ermey

D'Aronique: George Wendt

Jesus deSade : Marilyn Manson

John Wayne: Clint Eastwood

Jody: Steven Seagal

TC: Collin Farrell

Marie L'Angelle: Cloris Leachman

The Sex Detectives-

Bob: Philip Seymour Hoffman

Freddy: Dean Haglund

I'm not sure how serious you are with half of those, but...

Jody: Steven Seagal

Woody Harrelson

TC: Collin Farrell

Kevin Bacon

Bob: Philip Seymour Hoffman

Brian Glover (except he's dead)

Freddy: Dean Haglund

Woody Allen

The latter two because they're the people the characters were based on.

Steven Segal???? Have you taken a look at that guy lately??? Jody is a ripped, badass looking psycho killing machine. Segal prompts laughter when he appears onscreen these days. He looks like the goodyear blimp wrapped in ethnic clothing.

I see people in their prime. Plus I compiled most of that last 8 years ago, if you must know. You're all so twitchy! Go with the flow, man! Think of how well that cast would perform that series were they all in their "acting prime". I realize for Segall, that's a stretch, but near with the concept--meditate on it and become "one" with it.

Even picturing him in his prime, I can't see Segal as a hardcore psychopath.

Exactly. Jody's supposed to radiate evil and danger and pure malevolence. He's like a coiled rattlesnake. Segal always gives out extremely serene vibes. He comes across as rather benevolent. The only thing he's got in common with Jody are the cool hand to hand skills.

I expected him to grow as an actor from that portrayal. It would have changed his career, men!

Seriously, though, how would the Christian right actually hurt HBO?

Well we always forget the other half of the world. If problems are Christians (I'm not talking about any communist Frasier here), why don't somebody do the series in a Muslim country? Or indian? No one in occident would pay attention to it until the series's finished...

Akhira, begin to send mails to Bolliwood. Tell'em we want Preacher in a TV series.

But then, wouldn't it have to be a musical? I saw a preview of the latest Baliwood (or is it Bollywood?) superhero film and it was a musical. I was...awestruck by its strangeness.

This is the funniest thing I ever heard. Bollywood still thinks that kissing is 'edgy, adult content'. There were riots a few years ago about a movie that was about two lesbian housewives.

Bollywood movies are utter utter shit, mate. The vast, vast majority of them.

And i don't think that Muslim countries would be all that open to a show with that much sex and violence either.

Western countries are the only ones with the money and the open mindedness to even think about producing a show based on something like Preacher.

Preacher in Bollywood <shudders>

I think a Muslim country would have far more of a problem with a story about seeking revenge against God than America would.

Okay, okay. Let's move to Japan. Does it mind if Preacher turns into an Anime series?

ACXsama (where's ACX anyway?), tell to Production IG that a Preacher series should be done.

After Dragon Ball and all the porn anime they do there, they won't have any trouble with violent and sex content...

Not sure the anime style would fit the content, though. It's a resolutely American comic, even if it's written by an Irishman and drawn by an Englishman.

I don't know, it might be a kick to have a Preacher: Gone to Yokohama anime movie with a giant-eyed, Japanese speaking Jesse Custer and co. with perhaps the ghost of John Wayne replaced by the ghost of one of those old Samurai actors. :)

As if manga were only big eyes and small mouths... C'mon, there is 'Blood the last vampire', Lain... You've seen Animatrix, right? And if there is a good anime based on the the ciclism competition tour of Spain(Andalucia no Natsu), they can get the essence of Preacher.

I'm sure of this.

God help me, I can actually imagine that happening. It's screening in my head... Cassidy... as an anime character!

Blood still has that recogniseable anime style, though.

OK, but why would they? Is Preacher popular in Japan? Would it sell?

Preacher isn't all that popular here in the U.S./Canada/Mexico except for a few thousand comic book fans which is why I doubt HBO would spend the money to make a proper Preacher series.

While I think that you're right insofar as it probably wont get made, I do think that Preacher would be really fucking popular as a TV show with the amount of visibility HBO would give it. It's got everything that people love and done right it would be hilarious and violent and sexy and touching and chockfull of the sort of flagwaving chest-thumping that people get riled up at. It would also arouse a good amount of opposition, but if it was to get made/air in its entirety, I'd bet it would be a huge hit. If not at first then later on DVD as word got around.

I can see it being popular among men aged 18-49 and a bit hit with the military crowd in Iraq. I can even see Dubya secrectly getting a kick out of it (but not Laura). But ask yourself would your mom watch it? I know my mom watched The Sopranos and Six Feet Under religiously but I doubt she would have the same enthusiam for a Preacher series. I think HBO is desperatly looking for another break-out hit along the lines of the forementioned shows as well as Sex and The City but I just don't think a Preacher series would rise much above a cult horror show, which is also why I doubt there would be any significant outcry from any media watchdog groups.

I think if the cosmological stuff was at all like what was in Ennis's writing, the series would have trouble....
