What is best in life?

Recommended Posts

I loved Hawk the Slayer as a kid it was awesome then I saw it as a teenager and thought it was rubbish but still fun.

I really need to see it again though because I haven't in years.

- I once punched a guy out for saying that "Hawk the Slayer" was rubbish.

- Good for you.

- Yeah, thanks. But that's not the point, Tim. The point is I was defending the fantasy genre with terminal intensity, when what I should have said was "Dad, you're right, but let's give Krull a try and we'll discuss it later."

I cant believe I missed all these -

I read all the Conan books

from a lawyer who took his phd in law in Germany

i just borrowed them

I liked them - otherwise I wouldnt have borrowed all of them

I read a few Conan comics

but I cant remember them very well

And I liked the Conan movies

I thought twas a a pity that they couldnt harness

the richness of the books

He certainly was a barbarian

(with all the hit class bonuses, eh Tony?)

As a Samurai Jack fan GenGris, you should re-watch the original Conan film if only to see how many things that cartoon series has 'homaged' from the movie.

Really? Conan and Samurai Jack??

I was out looking for Animax movies but found a Conan movie

Sorry to say it wasnt the first movie, but I got it anyways

They didnt have the first one, but if I see it, I'll get it.

Yes I liked it.

Have you ever seen this really old vintage Samurai tv series

called Shin Taru the swordman .... Tombei (sp?) - a ninja

that one reminds me of Samurai Jack.

That was a fine fine show. If I ever see that on any cd

i'm going to buy it...

Back to Conan - he's got a bastard sword right?

or what they call a hand-and-a-half, right?

what i like is their plus saving throw against magic!

what is it, do you remember, the bonus?

all our manuals were with the guy who passed away....

Hmmm... I don't recall. I know it is an 'exotic' weapon and you can only use it with one hand if you've had the special training, otherwise it's two-handed. I don't remember the saving throw bonus. Wasn't it like +1 Fortitude or something?

I dont remember. I wonder if either Charlie or Lou remember?

I suppose I could google it. Thanks anyway, Tony.

It has been ages since we played so I dont remember.

Still have the different game thingamajiggys tho.

I always thought that Conan was THE macho man.

Better than Kull anyway, tho supposedly they belong to the same

class....

I thought it was you comparing Samurai Jack and Conan, Tony -

but it was Andy...

so which parts Andy? pls. shed further light on a topic that

fascinates me

Australia's 7 Network showed Conan the Barbarian last night. Two things puzzled me.

1. They slotted it after Pirates of the Caribbean and called the double-bill "Seven's Pirate Weekend".

2. They cut out a few of the bare-breast shots, but left in the bit where the guy's shagging the llama. :o

On the whole, though, I thought the 7 Network's bizarre touches added to the mystique of an already-awesome movie.

I was wondering where my post to Jason was

but I guess it disappeared by way of the shutdown

done by the anti-virus...

i dont remember any those parts Jason

i will take Andy's advice, as soon as i find a copy

the one that i found is Conan the Destroyer

(is that the second movie?)

************

I have a question - to those who read the books and comics -

Did the comics follow Howard's book?

Like the wheretofores of Conan and the pirate Belit

and the woman he married, Zenobia - a slave

who rescued him .... what was it - an apelike monster

(my memory has an image of a black furless monster,

much like the "gorillas" in that movie I saw which had

a guy teaching a female how to talk.

Be kind - it has been a long time since I read it)

The Marvel ones followed Howard, though there was all kinds of stuff imported to fill in the gaps in the characters history as laid down by Howard, which often drew on work by other writers of sword and sorcery fiction (a lot of Gardner Fox and John Jakes stuff was reworked, I think). No idea if the Dark Horse stuff is making any effort in this direction.

They are trying super hard to be faithful to the Howard stories with about one fill-in issue per 8 Howard issues.

They even have a biographical strip about Howard's life at the end of each issue.

Gen-The Marvel Conan comic series (by Roy Thomas) had the Belit story-line.

The Giant Sized Conan issues had the story about Conan rescuing Zenobia from the ape-monster.

The early Annuals adapted the stories about King Conan by Howard.

The Marvel series started out with Conan leaving Cimmeria, and followed Conan's life in chronoligical order based on Howard.

Those stories are being reprinted in Trades by Dark Horse right now. They're well worth your time to pick up.

This is true but (as I said) most of the better stories from that run don't have much to do with Howard.

Most of it is Roy Thomas playing off of Howard.

Some of the stories are reworked version of non-Conan Howard stories, with Conan substituted in place of Howard's actual protagonist.

As far as I remember, only one plot was based off of a John Jakes' story.

Certainly, other S&S authors were incorporated into the story, but a good portion of the non-Howard stories are Roy Thomas originals attempting to copy the style of Howard's Conan stories.

There is only the one John Jakes (I think it's the one with the giant spider) but there's a couple of Gardner Fox "Kothar the [Whatever]" things, and the Conan meets Elric which the chap who lillustrated the Savoy editions of The Weird Of the White Wolf and Stormbringer wrote from a synopsis Moorcock knocked out when he was bored one afternoon...

Yeah, the Elric one is pretty jarring, but if you love Moorcock's creations as much or more than Howards (as I do, and I know Gen really likes Elric too), it was pretty fun.

I loved it, but part of the fun is Conan saying "My arm makes two of yours yet you hold me back!" or however it goes, and Windsor Smith isn't drawing a noticably bulkier Conan than he did an Elric...
