Anyone who even hints that Joy Division are a goth band gets a slap.

The Crow is definitely goth-inspired, though. The design of the central character is what Robert Smith looks like in his dreams. Where he's not an ugly fat fuck, that is.

I'm pretty sure THIS

sandman.jpg

...is what Robert Smith looks like in his dreams. Plus, I'm pretty sure mr. Smith was at least part of the inspiration for that character's look.

Plus, hating "goths" is about as daft as "hating metal" or "hating punk" or "hating jazz" or "hating hippies". Snobbish, elitist crap, IMNSHO

I love the Cure, me.

I'm rather fond of the Cure myself ('Pornography' and 'Disintegration' are aces, and 'Friday I'm In Love' is one of the best pop songs ever written), and wouldn't want to endorse Tom's bitter hatred. I just made the Smith/Draven comparison because The Crow predates Sandman, and it seemed valid enough to me.

I have no problem with goth, either as a musical or cultural phenomenon - I know some lovely goths and some silly arsehole goths, and have listened to some great goth music and some lousy pretentious goth wank. Pretty much like anything else, then.

Fair enough. I agree.

(And you did mean that Draven cam first IN THIS THREAD yeah? Seeing as The Cure predates the Crow by a good many years...)

If you were joking, I apologize, Tom. Only I remember several other disputes on this very same topic from before. Sorry if I was too easily riled.

We can settle it all in Bristol, eh? ;)

Loathe as I am to go into depth on the subject, there is an obvious, to me at any rate, layer of irony inherent in me saying "I fucking hate goth, me."

Surely the phrasing of the statement itself indicates some level of humour at work?

Now while it's true that I find goth generally to be aesthetically abhorrent I can't say that I spend enough time thinking about it to genuinely hate it. But I do know that a few of the motley crew here are closest goths and metallers and some of them can be quite po faced about such things so I like to wind the fuckers up.

It usually works a treat too, as you've just proved.

Yeah, being an annoying prick is surprisingly easy, isn't it? ;)

"Crow" was indeed inspired by Goths.

I thought the Crow was inspired by the loss of JO Barr's wife?

The story, but not necessarily the visual style, which I think is what was being discussed.

Ahh...........................the little sick and twisted pleasures in the inner workings or should I say trappings of a BEAUTIFUL mind.

Matadoor, knows that he/she is the only one for me.

Yes......so back off he's ALL mine! Don't touch him. What movie was that again with Jamie lee Curtis and OTTO. Let me help out here and channel his negative energy back my way again. We all know Tom is a very angry lad becuz he has come to the realization that he can't make an honest living with the talentless punkrock performance he brings on stage. I ALWAYS take that into account in my dealings with him. Being talentless and coming full terms with it at the age of 30 wears a MOFO down eventually. It turns an individual into someone/thing ...like......well like TOM. I had to say that Becuz I was/am a huge CURE fan (since 81) and saw him and Souxsie (?) and the Banshees early on.

You know, I've been wondering if the Crow's make-up style was at all influenced by Alice Cooper? I wonder if JO Barr is a fan at all? I'll ask him that next time I see him.

I notice that Matadoor's dropped the British "accent" again.

As for the remarks about my talent or lack thereof I have but one reply:

"Meh."

No, not personally but he's a Michigan native and at every single con I attend. I've met him numerous times, more than I can count really. You a fan? Maybe when I go to MotorCity Con in May I can hook you up with some swag.
