I'm not saying that if someone chooses not to vote they're wrong, just that they shouldn't complain about the government they get.

I do understand the point you're trying to make, but if they can't stand any of the candidates presented to them, and they still feel strongly enough to complain about what is provided for them (and voted for by the majority*), then they obviously don't believe there is anyone who represents their views. Correct?

If that's the case get up there and fucking stand for election. Seriously. If someone is just going to fucking complain that there is no-one who represents their views and are just waiting on some mystical "perfect candidate" who is an identical mirror of their beliefs to appear before they can be bothered to get off their arse and vote then maybe they should stand themselves instead of not doing anything but still whinge about it.

*of course I realise that if someone get's 40% of the vote they don't have a proper "majority" but they may still have the most votes.

There is a case to be made about the fucked-upness of your electoral system (especially when it comes to parliamentary elections), which makes it well-nigh impossible for alternatives to the 2 (3 if we're being generous) major parties to have any real chance at winning. The system in both the UK and the US lays the foundation for huge, conglomerate parties that are extremely similar politically, and where massively popular opinions get stymied. (The war being a case in point) Becoming apathetic in the face of such odds isn't necessarily evidence of a huge character flaw.

My evil plan worked!

I think most people have far more of a Socialist leaning than they ever realize, because they either have never been exposed to Marxist or Socialist thought, or because they've been taught that Socialism is something very bad.

Really, so many of these Americans I see ranting and raving about the "evils of Socialism", I'm sure are people who would benefit amongst the most from Socialism. Over here, it seems like the only thing the majority of people (who are not poor) care about is taxes. Because of the way the American system is set up, I can't blame them, but at the same time their criticism always seems to be that they "don't want their money paying for welfare cheats!".

Of course, the behaviour and attitude of some of the Socialist parties doesn't help the cause any.

I'd have a look at a few Mail stories about freeloading giro funded chav scum (or worse still, evil immigrants who come over here turban in hand to make a fortune off the dole) before you lay that one too heavy on the Americans. The right leaning press over here have been masters of that dark art for thirty or forty years now.

Oh, I'm sure that's very true, Dog.

You'll find that my political commentary is usually directed at my home country, or countries whose direction is being guided by my home country.

I think the Left needs to worry about its own nation-State to the largest part possible, while still forming international solidarity movements.

It's an element you see often in Liberal circles, like during the Cold War, when American policies were always judged versus the USSR. "Oh, I suppose you think Stalin is better!", "Oh, I suppose there's less of a police state in the USSR!". Yeah, that's not the point. The sins of the Soviet Union do not excuse the sins of America. We're not playing a game of "let's pick who is worse!".

It allowed the US to get away with so many Imperialist ventures, based in pure propaganda.

Yeah, there were a ton of faults in the Soviet Union, but I'm not going to change their society. I have my own diseased nation-State to worry about at home.

Sorry. That's just a rant. Everything after my first sentence has nothing to do with your comments.

Can anyone else who has read the comics post some suitably hidden spoilers (or PM me)?

I'm curious to know what they're saying but not curious enough to buy the comic (same with 'who is a skrull?' etc)

The story so far is that someone is attacking the presedential candidates. The assassins were often people aligned with each respective candidate, acting under mind control. The League split up to protect each of the four. The next day Green Arrow stops an attack on the less likely to win Democratic candidate (he's a little like Kucinich), and in a later TV interview inadvertantly expresses his admiration, causing people to think he is endorsing the candidate, which he later officially does. Amid debate on wether or not Superheros should do that kind of thing, Guy Gardner endorses the McCain-like (who then has an assassination attempt himself) character and many other heroes follow in his example. The second issue ends with Bruce Wayne endorsing the other democrat.
