John's laundry

Recommended Posts

We assume that he does laundry as evidenced by issue 51 where he is in a laundry and has his freak out. So now this leads one to ask what type of clothes he has, do they get drycleaned, but one time in the laundromat wouldn't be the end of them, or do you have to take them to the dry cleaning each time. Then I got thinking that well with all his jet setting and adventures how does he have the time to do his laundry? Taking the Chas spin off for example, nice resort liek that prob has laundry, so would he do it there? Diggle name drops Ben Sherman shirts when Constantine is getting all dressed up nice and smart again, and I know theres collared shirts such as the ones trad skinheads and what not wear(side note what do they war now, abercombie and fitch?). Are they all of the same material? Or does he litterly have only one outfit consisting of 1 shirt and trousers, black tie and his coat, though evidently it seemed to be that when he picked himself back up again he'd have to buy all his gear again, so would have have done that with the money won from the casino? If so what does he get, a just shirt and trousers, or he invest in a new trenchcoat as well?

Erm so as to his ageing.

Ok the series starts in 1988 yes? and if he is born in 1955 that makes him 33. Now he appears in Moores swamp thing in what mid 80's? So lets call that say at the one end 28. If we go with that, thats still a young guy running round sending Swamp thing everywhere. THen if we take his punk spell, when is that? evidently mid to late 70's so he'd be what early twenties?

What interests me the most however how does he go from punk rawker to sharply dressed mod looking dude? If he even is supposed to look mod, rude boy ish and not just like some businessmen. yeah I know he's supoosed to look like Sting from quadrophenia, but is it mentioned anywhere in the backstory how this change occurs, or more importantly ,why it did? I think that would make for much better flashback or story then more Newcastle stories. That recent two parter, the first cover looked cool and maybe the SLF writing in the one place forget the page., but I like Stiff Little Fingers, oh well.

Anyone what we can make of any of that? have stories been done? I know Jenkins did some stories with that RIch dude, but thats with Arthur and mideavel time I think,

Trav

A lot of punks did start dressing pretty sharp after that business rolled over and died. Besides, as he started off as a teenaged hippie, he'd already had one radical change of image to start dressing all punky, hadn't he?

He probably does what Jack Reacher does and just wear the same thing everyday and when his clothes get too dirty or worn he gets a whole new set.

There was a story about his early days — it might have been published outside the regular monthly title — where it was shown that he got involved with a group of dodgy magicians while he was learning his stuff. To finish his initiation, the group asked him to kill someone (or something like that). Maybe it was that group that encouraged him to dress more sharply.

Well, it certainly looks like he's only got one set of clothes.

I hope he didn't buy a new trenchcoat. It was a bad fashion choice in the first place. He'd have to be mental to buy another one.

He had to buy a new trenchcoat when bums stole his old one after Papa Midnite put the whammy on him.

Then there was the time he switched to a black coat after hanging around with hippies - not sure where his original coat was at that time.

In emergency situations, like getting pummeled by a rain of dead babies, he's been known to use the laundry facilities at Chas's house.

How's a trenchcoat a bad fashion choice? Huh, wonder what that other story is

The story JasonT was referring to was during Mark Millar's run on Swamp Thing.

Eh, maybe he just changed as he aged, like a lot of people do. I dressed punk in early high school, Goth in late high school, glam in early college, then I started to wear suits in late college. The rumpled dress shirt, one pair of pants, and a trenchcoat look is certainly far easier, which is pretty much my current style of dress (the pants being jeans in my case, and I rarely wear my trenchcoat anymore as I tend to change coats much more than shirts or pants).

Hey Christian.

I think a key factor here is that homeless period near the end of Garf's run, I think he kinda got out of the "hygiene" habit for a while after that.

I'm pretending that whole arc did not happen. Stupid, out of character actions by John + the douche-king of vampires = one of the low points of the series, IMO.

True dat.

Some of JC's appearances outside of the monthly title might not be worth tracking down — for example, The Trenchcoat Brigade — but that's got nothing to do with whether or not they're canon.

I'd definitely advise against tracking down any of his cameos in the Nancy Collins Swamp Thing, but that's probably just me not being overfond of Dick Van Dyke's turn in Mary Poppins.

Didn't Manor give him a new coat as well?

Possibly on more than one occasion.

Poor Jase. Your dirty minded euphemism went over the heads of everyone or sensibly they deliberately ignored it.
