Are Comics Considered Literature?

Recommended Posts

By some people. Not by others. Both are correct.

Neil Gaiman received the World Fantasy Award for a comic.

I would say, 'comics is more than literature in some aspects, in others is not, so it's part literature'. Salomonic.

I don't consider literature as a more noble art than comics, just because it's older, like a lot of people believe.

Why would you say that?

Because:

Cerebus - Yes

Ms. Marvel - No

Maus - Yes

World War Hulk - No

Bone - Yes

Marvel Apes - No

Watchmen - Yes

JLA - No

Mouse Guard - Yes

Blue Beetle - No

and so on, with grey areas and everything.

Assuming you mean do comic books as a medium fit into the category of that of literiture, hard to say.

As for if or not it is widely perceived to be an art form, then... sure, a little bit.

Are you asking whether it IS literature, or whether it's CONSIDERED literature?

If a), then the answer is simply yes.

If b), then Mark said it quite well.

Not necessarily true. As Scott McCloud pointed out in Understanding Comics, if you consider comics to be sequential art telling a story, the art form is at least as old as ancient Egypt, if not going back to cave paintings. I would say that comics actually predate 'literature', as we have been drawing pictures to explain things to each other since before written language was really around. So yes, I would say that in general comics qualify as literature, but that there are certain comics in particular that I would not call literature, just as there are certain books in particular that I would not call literature.
