Frank Darabont circles zombies

Cabler is close to finalizing one of the richest development deals ever with Darabont to write and direct a series adaptation of the Image Comics graphic novel series "The Walking Dead," penned by Robert Kirkman. Gale Anne Hurd of Valhalla Motion Pictures and David Alpert of Circle of Confusion are also on board to exec produce.

That's promising. Not just because I like Frank Daranbont's character work and his scary work, but I really like the notion that this could start a trend of comic book series being adapted as series rather than as films.

Although there's a lot of potential there for drawn out story telling too. Still this 'un could be good!

During the Do Zombies Read Comics? panel at this year’s Thought Bubble, artist Charlie Adlard was asked about the upcoming AMC adaptation of The Walking Dead – the comic written by Robert Kirkman and drawn by Adlard.

According to Adlard, the production has, so far, stuck very firmly to the Image comic. Adlard went as far as saying that, barring any last minute changes, the AMC series will be “different from any other zombie [production]“ and as it’s on cable TV the series will be just like watching The Walking Dead, with no “…watering down or genericising [of] the original comic”.

"WALKING DEAD" PILOT TO FILM IN MAY

by Kiel Phegley, News Editor

In Hollywood, nothing is official until the audience is sitting in front of the screen, but getting a TV pilot underway is possibly the biggest step towards getting story out there short of official release. And today, word came out that the cameras will roll on AMC's planned adaptation of "The Walking Dead" from Robert Kirkman and Image Comics.

Horror news source Bloody Disgusting is reporting that writer-director Frank Darabont's pilot for a proposed "Walking Dead" TV series will begin filming in May in Atlanta, Georgia. Focusing on the years-long survival story of southern sheriff Rick Grimes in the fact of a devastating zombie plague, the comic book was long-cited by fans as a prime example of a "would work better as a TV show than as a movie" wishlist item.

With only a few short months until filming begins, it only reasons that casting announcements for the potential series will spring up soon, something Kirkman himself professed excitement for in a September interview with CBR, saying, "I'm excited about the casting and I'm excited about being able to watch the show. I'm excited about everything, but it's kind of odd… my dad sent me an e-mail and he goes, "Congratulations about the TV show." I never thought I'd get that e-mail from my dad – it's kind of bizarre. It's kind of a whole surreal thing."

Look for more news on the "Walking Dead" pilot and possible fully-fledged series as it becomes available right here on CBR!

THE ZOMBIES ARE COMING! DARABONT'S WALKING DEAD GETS THE GREEN LIGHT

by: Eric Walkuski Jan. 20, 2010

Great news for all of you jonesing for that ever-elusive zombie epic on t.v., this is the news you've craving. AMC has given the official greenlight to Frank Darabont's "The Walking Dead". While we knew the show was being developed based on the announcement way back in August, it's a whole new ballgame now that it has gotten the go-ahead. This means we can expect to hear lots of casting/creative news on the show in the coming months.

There is no start or air date set yet, but it's safe to assume that we won't get to see the show until 2011 some time. Gale Anne Hurd will executive produce and Darabont is in line to direct the pilot.

TV: 'The Walking Dead' Pilot to Begin Lensing in May

By: MrDisgusting

Bloody Disgusting has learned that a May 15 start date has been locked for the pilot episode of "The Walking Dead", AMC's live-action comic book adaptation being directed by Frank Darabont. Shooting will commence in Atlanta, GA with hopes of bringing us a new TV series based on one of the greatest comics of all time. Published by Image Comics, Robert Kirkman's tale chronicles the travels of a group of people trying to survive in a world stricken by a zombie apocalypse. The Walking Dead is centered on Rick Grimes, a small-town police officer from Cynthiana, Kentucky, his family, and a number of other survivors who have banded together in order to survive after the world is overrun with zombies. As the series progresses, the characters become more developed, and their personalities shift under the stress of a zombie apocalypse. Fighting growing despair — and sometimes each other — the group searches for a secure location which they can finally call home. -Wiki

Only days after its first bit of pilot casting news hit, and it looks as though AMC's adaptation of Rober Kirkman's Image Comics series "The Walking Dead" will definitely hit the cable channel next fall. The Hollywood Reporter has first word that the network has officially picked up the Frank Darabont-helmed zombie show with a six-episode commitment to air in October as part of AMC's annual Fearfest horror marathon.

On Wed., Jun. 2 production began in Atlanta for AMC's adaptation of the Robert Kirkman comic The Walking Dead. The six-episode first season -- written, produced and directed by three-time Academy Award-nominee Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) -- follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, traveling in search of a safe and secure home after a zombie apocalypse.

To whet your appetite for this tale of the living and the undead, AMCtv.com is pleased to present this exclusive first sneak peek at the Walkers -- the series' titular flesh-eating creatures.

Behind the scenes video

Production has started on AMC's newest original series, and who better to tell you about it than The Walking Dead writer, director and executive producer Frank Darabont and executive producer Gale Anne Hurd. In this exclusive video, Darabont and Hurd discuss the series; Darabont talks about his inspiration for doing a show about zombies, the nature of the story and his goal to "do for zombies what Mad Men has done for advertising."

MTV News piece on the show.

Again, looks like scenes straight from the first trade. Obviously a bit early to be saying but if it lives up to all the pre-launch publicity then six episodes of this a year or so would be amazing.

'Walking Dead' second season confirmed?

AMC's upcoming horror series The Walking Dead has apparently already been commissioned for a second season.

The first season of the show - adapted from the Image Comics series by writer Robert Kirkman - is due to premiere on the network in October.

However, a post on the AMC web site is currently advertising a competition to win "the opportunity to become one of the undead" and land a walk-on part in "a Season 2 episode", suggesting that further episodes have already been commissioned.

The site also explains that "specifics of the walk-on role will be determined at the producer’s sole discretion".

The first season of the show - starring Andrew Lincoln as police officer Rick Grimes - will run for six episodes.

Things are going along too well for this show. I'm kinda worried about that, but i'M thrilled we get two seasons, even though that works out to about 12 episodes total, about 1 full season for AMC's other shows. I entered the walk-on role contest. I want to play a Governor henchman or something.

Six one-hour episodes should cover one trade nicely, seems like the perfect bite-sized chunks to be tackling this project in.

Shaky-cam footage of the trailer from Comic-Con :

This seems to suggest that the gist of the opening season will be Rick trying to find his wife and son.
