Classic comics of 2009

Recommended Posts

There's another thread for the best comics of 2009 here: http://hellblazer.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=8385

The thread you're reading now is for comics that are really special or significant works in the medium — think Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns, classic Sandman.

Did anything of that calibre come out in 2009?

My answer is "nearly": Battlefields — Dear Billy, by Garth Ennis & Peter Snejbjerg, was bloody close.

What's your answer?

Asterios Polyp was an instant classic. One of the very few 'graphic novels' that actually deserve the label.

Bryan Talbot's Grandville wasn't half bad either. Not a game-changer in the way that 'Luther Arkwright' or even 'One Bad Rat' was, but the hugely entertaining work of a very talented artist at the peak of his craft.

Nope, I don't think so.

The Unwritten.

Can't say for sure yet, but I marked this book early as the next Sandman, if Vertigo gives it the chance.

There's nothing close to this literate on the stands at the moment.

Now, it may not catch on like Sandman....because Goths won't pour out to buy it, and besides there's no sub-culture like the Goths at the moment to give a comic that cult status...but, the only comic I see being published right now that I believe will one day be remembered as a classic is the The Unwritten.

My favorite moment from my favorite comic in 2009:

I felt like these pages summed up the comic for me.
