Crossgen returns!

Recommended Posts

Remember Crossgen comics? I do! I was rather found of Ruse, Way of the Rat, The Path and Scion. There were also some other great books, in my opinion. Well Marvel has obtained the reprint rights to their catalog

Quesada mentions it in his Cup O Joe

I am very anxious to see this happen.

Also, many artists that are now a deal, worked there and many work at Marvel: Greg Land, Butch Guice, Steve Epting, Jimmy Cheung, Steve McNiven, Andrea Di Vito

Fuck Greg Land.

It needs saying as often as possible.

He does some pretty looking stuff, but I've never been a huge fan. Why you say that Mark?

Now, Butch Guice and Steve Epting are more my cuppa

Because he's fucking awful. I'd question "pretty", too - perhaps replacing it with "sub-pornographic", which seems to be his main area of expertise. See also: Ed Benes, who - combined with Land - is the main reason I wouldn't dare to direct several female friends of mine towards Birds of Prey, for example. Which is a shame, because if it was drawn by actual artists, rather than salivating thirteen-year-old horndogs, they'd love it.

I've got no problem at all with actual pornography - quite the contrary - but it's sad, pathetic and offensive that half the mainstream superhero books on the shelf look like something you'd normally expect to buy in a discreet brown paper bag. Greg Land is far from the only offender, but he's one of the worst.

Well the covers of Birds of Prey made Huntress look like she was expecting you to give her a proper tip. But in the actual book she barely drawn that way, and I do agree that they can often make the girls look like strippers even though the stories are actually pretty enjoyable.

Mark you also forgot to mention Frank Cho. He has a habit of drawing girls like they are Jenna Jameson.

I have been meaning to check out a few Crossgen books. One of them was Route 666, though I hope marvel actually continues or finishes up the story line good and proper.

What, like they're doing with MarvelMiracleman at the moment, you mean?

I wouldn't hope for anything more than a few collections out of this. Still, a nice fat Essential of all of Ruse or Sigil would be good fun...

I doubt Marvel will do that.

They'll try to cash in as much as possible on it.

Expect to see some Deluxe Hardcover collections of the more popular material, and probably a lot of stuff ignored.

They might stick some new material under their Icon imprint.

I've never read any of the CrossGen material.

Greg Land's art is very stiff. He doesn't realize how to tell a story with art, which is what artists drawing comics are supposed to be able to do. Plus, now, all of his backgrounds are just computer generated. Sure, those do look pretty, I'll admit. But, it's very lazy.

 Bwah ha ha! Nice one.

EDIT: I just Google-image-searched "greg land" to see what his work looks like, and much to my amusement, the results are full of websites that track down the original images he lightboxes. Here's a good one, with links to more at the bottom of the page: http://www.lubbockonline.net/blogs/slemmons/comments.php?y=07&m=08&entry=entry070813-071341
