Super heroes! They really exist!

Recommended Posts

I have heard about people that actually dress up in a costume and patrol their neighborhoods helping others. Some attempt to fight crime, while others just try to help the homeless get a good meal. I find this incredibly interesting and I'm surprised there isn't more media coverage. Is this the dawning of our Golden Age?

Here is an article about such folks:

There are easier ways to get the homeless a good meal, and less conspicuous also...

I thought this was going to be about the new Stan Lee TV show about Ripley's Believe It or Not type people.

That show makes me chuckle every time I see Lee on the commercial. "I knew that superhumans existed, I just had to find them".

Yeah, the guy who can stick nails in his skin without flinching is a pretty far cry from the Silver Age of the Marvel Universe...maybe more like the early days of Image...

I'm reminded of that quotation of Neil Gaiman's about how there used to be masked defenders of the American way of life, who did use titles for themselves a bit like The Justice League Of America. A bit unfair, perhaps, but loads better than "Whatsisface is not your bitch..."

You mean all those crypto-fascist* groups who sprung up around World War II?

*A bit unfair to characterize most of the groups in such a manner. It wasn't that simplistic.

Not everyone was Charles Lindbergh and Walt Disney, after all. (OK, there was nothing "crypto" about Disney.)

"The America First League!"

Or, are we just referring to masked white supremacists here?

Both, I'm afraid. The KKK weren't the only group who wore masks and had a daft name and a taste for lynching people.

Shurely 'krypo-fascists'? If we're talking superheroes and everything...

I saw a documentary about these people at the London Film Festival.

It's called Superheroes and done with a clear link to comic nerdery that is soon shifted to both a more pathological type of person and people who just do good things.

The folks working with street homeless folks are particularly worthwhile and there's a chap who has a gang of people clearly inspired by Warren Ellis's goth super hero canon, who move drug dealers on from Manhattan squares at night.

The trailer is a tad misleading

Master Legend combined the playboy behaviour of Bruce Wayne with being a crazy homeless guy. He is my favourite.
