Hellblazer: The Movie

Recommended Posts

Thought I might draw your attention to this. It's a fan-edited version of Constantine that restores the deleted scenes and re-arranges it to be more Constantine-focused. Apparently it also gets rid of the chewing gum ending.

I'm on limited bandwidth so I won't be downloading it at the minute, but I'll be interested to see what you all make of it.

It's not easy, I was downloading for 11 hours on a corporate connection last night and still only got 40% of a it. All this to watch a film I didn't like the first time round.

I've been downloading that humongous thing for 3 days, and i've only gotten half of it. Only 4 seeds and 2 peers, and it seems only one seed at a time feels like connecting.

I have saved time and bandwidth by just remembering the good bits of the film in an order that suits me.

That's my suggestion.

I wish I could, but curiosity gets the better of me.

I've just started watching it and first thing I notice is that they didn't do a good job with the interlacing, so you get the horizontal lines you get with most badly interlaced videos. Not the whole time but when there's significant movement in the frame.

Oh, here:

Does anyone know why they call him Constanteen instead of Constantine? Was that on purpose or out of ignorance having not heard it pronounced out loud before?

Still hate the concept of a teenaged Chas. The relationship between John and Chas isn't Hellblazer. It's one of things that bothered me most about this movie: they ruined the character of Chas! John's best friend!

I don't remember from the original, but was a gothic metal song playing loudly while John walked up to his place over the bowling alley? Sounds like Evanescence. Don't recall Chas bowling or writing on the bowling ball.

Rachel Weisz was great in it. She could have played Angie had they gone in a comic direction with the script.

Don't recall the porn overlay (audio and video) for the city scenes after the dream. They added the Ellie scene. Was it in the theatrical release?

It's an easy mistake to make*

Some -ine words are pronounced that way in proper English.

Fluorine, Quinine, Acetylcholine, Aubergine, Tangerine, Tambourine, Vespertine, Margarine are all "-een" (scientific and french)

Oh and forenames like Pauline and Geraldine, which tend to come from the french)

Surnames, plus Greek & Latin words tend to get "-ine" with an "i"

Equine, Bovine, Coalmine, Byzantine, Saturnine,

A few get shortened as in feminine and masculine.

Then there's Aborigine which is almost a bona fide latin pronounciation,

All of which leads us to the popular american folk song, "O My Darling, Clementine".

(*when ignoring anyone who might know)

This might be fixable, in VLC you can choose the de-interlace method on the right click video sub-menu, this might smooth it out if it isn't just a cross conversion artefact in the video.

Thanks, Matt, right after I posted that I remembered that under video. I'm a huge VLC fan, it's the only media player I use.

I thought Tilda Swinton was cool for casting, but I wish she would have had a more masculine hair cut to sell Gabriel's androgyny more. She looked more like a woman than as someone whose sexuality or gender is not obvious.

A disagreement I have with the portrayal of John is how he seems quick to fly off the handle. Chalk it up to the cancer, maybe, I still pictured John as someone who seldom displays emotions which would indicate a weakness, like frustration or despair.

Here's another scene I don't recall: the one with Rachel Weisz in the room with all the phones ringing? Kind of weird. I liked it. But I don't think I've seen it before.

The cat/footbath conduit to hell is silly.

The arm tattoos making the seal or whatever was silly, too right after the Beeman/Gary Lester covered in bugs scene.

His workshop was cool. Oh except for the stupid looking holy shotgun. And the holy brass knuckles.

Keanu's name type is bigger than everyone else's.

We must have been reading different comics. :hattip: John frequently is very emotional, and drowns himself in despair, or frustration.

Or booze, obviously.

He's emotional, Red, but he still keeps his cool. He lost it a lot recently in Milligan's run, but overall I've always considered him cool when the rest of the world went batshit crazy.

That whole thing about there being a difference between unemotional and having some self control springs to mind in connection with this...

Yeah - he can hold it together when there's an audience but when he's by himself it's a different story.

Just managed to watch this, I honestly don't remember seeing Constantine so I'm not sure on the difference between this edit and the original. It's a decent enough film, the effects are fantastic which is saying something in this age of ropey done-at-home-on-a-Mac special effects.

The thing is the characterisation of John is completely wrong, Keanu has a limited range, he's just not capable of being John Constantine, or at least the Constantine I like which is the Blokey Geezer from Ennis' and Jenkins runs, the man who has a sense of humour. This stuck out the most towards the end where Chaz, in the taxi, is asking if it's going to be okay and Constantine says something like "it's not how it is in the books" (is there a deeper meaning in that line?). John would've fed him a competent line in bullshit, all sunshine and roses "Yeah Chas, of course everything going to be fine, I know what I'm fucking doing don't I mate, straight in straight out nothing to worry about, don't be a pillock"

Constantine is just your typical brooding one dimensional action hero, "oh I've got issue with heaven and hell, boo hoo hoo" the same way John McClain has issues with thieves posing as terrorists or Martin Rigs has issues with South African Diplomats.

So how late to the party is this review?
