The Eagles 2010

Recommended Posts

(All 20 or so of us should do it.)

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/03/14/eagle-awards-nominations-announced-2/

http://www.eagleawards.co.uk/

The Eagles are now traditionally skewed to 2000AD which I read very seldom and then only in the collections.

Favourite Newcomer Writer

* Al Ewing (This is because he is my friend, and I have only read that Batman spin off by Cornell and the American Vampire by Snyder)

Favourite Newcomer Artist

* Sean Murphy (Let's all vote for him as penance for the whole black leather trenchcoat furore)

Favourite Writer

* Ed Brubaker

* Warren Ellis

* Grant Morrison

(I am undecided on this, but enjoyed Brubaker's work in the genre I usually ignore. For all their output, I only like one current series by the other two)

Favourite Writer/Artist

* Gabriel Ba with Fabio Moon

* Mike Mignola

* Darwyn Cooke

* Jeff Lemire

(All of the above, will probably go for Ba & Moon over Lemire)

Favourite Artist: Pencils

* Becky Cloonan ("Favourite", though Williams3 would be "best")

Favourite Artist: Inks

* Carlos Ezquerra

* Mike Mignola

* Gary Erskine

* Becky Cloonan

* Bill Sienkiewicz

(That's a confusing group, I shall not vote here)

Favourite Artist: Fully-Painted Artwork

* Ben Templesmith

Favourite Colourist

(My choice is not on the list so another No Vote)

Favourite Letterer

(I cannot say I have noticed.)

Favourite Editor

(My choice not here, no AV poll for me)

Favourite Publisher

* Dark Horse

(I refuse to vote for DC, even in recognition of Vertigo, would rather there was an imprint poll)

Favourite American Comicbook: Colour

* Hellboy by Mike Mignola plus Various (Dark Horse)

Favourite American Comicbook: Black and White

* Demo Vol.2 by Brain Wood and Becky Cloonan (DC Comics)

Favourite British Comicbook: Colour

(I dunno)

Favourite British Comicbook: Black and White

(ditto)

Favourite New Comicbook

* Daytripper by Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba (DC Comics/Vertigo)

Favourite Manga

(what's a manga?)

Favourite European Comicbook

(The Paul Gravett category !)

Favourite Web-Based Comic

* Freak Angels by Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield

(I read this in the trades, so sue me)

Favourite Single Story

(with Unwritten not represented here, I don't vote)

Favourite Continued Story

* Hellboy #47-49: The Storm by Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo (Dark Horse)

Favourite 2010 Cover

(see favourite single story)

Favourite 2010 Original Graphic Novel

* Hellblazer: Pandemonium by Jamie Delano and Jock

(it isn't my favourite but in the absence of the other dozen I would have voted above it, it's still good)

Favourite Reprint Compilation

* Charley’s War: Great Mutiny by Pat Mills and Joe Colquhoun (Titan Books ltd)

* Batwoman: Elegy by Gregg Rucker and J.H. Williams III (DC Comics)

* Absolute All Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly (DC Comics)

* The Walking Dead: Volume 13 by Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard and Cliff Rathburn (Image Comics)

* Doctor Who: Fugitive by Tony Lee, Al Davison and Matthew Smith (IDW Publishing)

(This category is seriously buggered, perhaps they should allow only re-prints of stuff that is actually a reprint rather than a planned format for an initial serialised release? Charley's War is the only one that fits. Also, bad form mis-spelling Rucka)

Favourite Comics-Related Book

(Meh)

Favourite Comics-Related Movie or TV Show

* The Big Bang Theory

(Not seen Walking Dead yet, roll on Channel 5)

Favourite Comics-Related Website

* Bleeding Cool

Favourite Magazine about Comics

* Tripwire (Tripwire)

Roll of Honour

* Dave Gibbons

(But how come Ezquerra's not on there yet?)

Thanks for the tipoff. I had no trouble voting in 90% of those categories.

Favourite Newcomer Artist

* Sean Murphy (Let's all vote for him as penance for the whole black leather trenchcoat furore)

I voted for Paul Cornell because I get a kick out of him being described as a "newcomer". :smile:

Favourite Artist: Fully-Painted Artwork

* Ben Templesmith

Ben must be something special if you've picked him over D'israeli. D'israeli is inhumanly good at what he does.

Favourite Reprint Compilation

...

(This category is seriously buggered, perhaps they should allow only re-prints of stuff that is actually a reprint rather than a planned format for an initial serialised release? Charley's War is the only one that fits. ...)

Then perhaps they shouldn't allow first editions either. :tongue: But yeah, Charley's War (any instalment) deserves it.

Roll of Honour

* Dave Gibbons

(But how come Ezquerra's not on there yet?)

I dunno. How come Gibbons isn't on there yet?

Yeah Paul did something for Just 1 Page so he's been around the comics scene for at least a decade.

The newcomers list is rarely that. They should call it the "OMG, this new guy just did X-Men!!!" award.

I see D'Israeli as a more all-round artist, I love his stuff and have voted for him again and again, but enjoy Templesmith's painting.

1st edition reprints is not the same thing, but these are things that have been languishing in comics piles for years. Jenkins Hellblazer would fit the bill, but anything contemporary - where TPB collections are usually part of the business plan = not a reprint.

Roll of Honour

1977 Stan Lee

1978 Steve Englehart

1979 Jack Kirby

1980 Roy Thomas

1984 Will Eisner

1986 Alan Moore

1987 Frank Miller

1988 Pat Mills

1990 2000AD

2000 Gil Kane

2001 Joe Quesada

2005 Neil Gaiman

2006 Grant Morrison

2007 Warren Ellis

2008 Mike Mignola

Wow. Warren Ellis is in there and John Wagner isn't. :blink:

I guess a few voters will have trouble with "Favourite Web-Based Comic". Do any of the forum's webcomic enthusiasts feel like voting?

Re Favourite Cover: here am the nominees.

In that War of the Independents cover, we have Bone and The Maxx and Gumby.

Comprehension does not cradle my head.

Well, basically only in 2010.

I mean, in 2001, you have Quesada, but then the next two years, you have deserving names.

Then you get Ellis, but then the next year you have another deserving name.

So, 2010.

Unless someone deserving makes it this year again, then it'll be "an off year every so often".

I've been trying to get Steve Gerber on the list for the past three years.

He hasn't even made it to the finals once yet.

How is Gerber not on the list?

I mean, Englehart made the list in 1978!

And, how is Bryan Lee O’Malley a new creator???

"Favourite guy who's been around for 10 years that I only just heard of!"

Yeah, I know that Gaiman and possibly Morrison deserve a place sooner or later, but I'd say since 2000 only Bolland and Kane should be on a genuine scroll of honour ahead of the likes of Baxendale, Hampson, O'Donnell, John Burns, Toth and Gerber. (And quite a few people you've probably never heard of.)

Although Alan Moore deserves it now, he won it in 1986.

Christian, have I misread your post, or do you have Brian Bolland mixed up with someone else? :ohmy:

I swear that read Brian BENDIS when I read it before!

I'm guessing the people behind the Eagle Award read my post and realized just how bad they looked placing Bendis on their list and they quickly changed the winner in 2010 to a different Brian.

Apart from that, I'm right behind those choices. Well, except for Scott Pilgrim, which I didn't like as much as all you dweebs did. :smile:

Ta for posting the results, Ade.
