Hellblazer collections - direct sales as a measure of something or other

Recommended Posts

UPDATE Feb 2015 work in progress

Sales of Hellblazer collections from the internet's comic sales charts.

Obviously these are direct sales only and most folks probably buy from Amazon these days.

Some fluctuations are going to be because retailers know the books will remain available and in high volume crossover type months these are likely to be reduced. The books are usually around 25 in the top 300 (formerly 100)

There is a method of finding wider sales figures, I think, but let's say comic shop sales are some sort of core readership.

Mostly From ICV2 and older data from http://www.comichron...omicssales.html

* 1st printing, I have not trawled that far back for other books

** 2nd printing in most cases, replaced by the current re-issues

***published out of sequence with Mike Carey's as they were shifting schedules for releasing trades after the original issues (and also "popular thriller writer" no doubt) See also Ellis and Azzarello.

That'd be the "sales" column after the date.

These are only sales in the direct market though and these things do much better in the wider market,

I should add that the original editions of those first volumes sold around 4000.

The Milligan run is around half that but may have suffered from people knowing a proper reprint series was on the way (plus any additional issues of quality etc etc). Oh and fewer shops.

i don't know why but at the moment i posted this, i didn't see the column when i posted, sooo i should see a doctor or something?

to put this into perspective, at what numbers sell the classic batman comics, like 'first year' or so?

Interesting to see the new release (Jenkins) only had a tiny blip.

And that Constantine is pretty much on a par with the classics (it sells less than Jenkins' run did back in the day, but sales have dropped across the board).

Since the TV series, Original Sins has made appearances in the Top 300 Graphic Novels, about 500 copies.

Sales of the graphic novels via Diamond.

Latest versions where there have been several, so the collections at the top mark the third edition of some trades.

I could not find the sales for 6 of the 1st editions.

There is little change in sales at comic shops over the past 10 yrs although the number of shops has fallen.

I am rather unsurprised that Shoot did so badly given the hype. The key story was available AND people knew the complete run was being republished.

The drop off of Constantine sales from monthly to collection should be considered by ratio (ie compare to something relatively popular but also Not part of A multi-book story such as Batman or Green Lantern. Maybe Aqua Man.

"who buys this shit" ?

fans of super hero crossovers

They're already relaunching Constantine as Constantine:The Hellblazer after the next big event, with a new creative team. That's going to be the best you can hope for.

Vertigo Comics just don't really sell the same as DC Comics anymore.

I sort of understood why the Shoot trade was released, get those later unpublished issues out there ahead of the chronological reprintings so you can gouge the readers twice over, but it still bugs me that they left out the Mike Carey/John Paul Leon issue that fell between Mina and Diggle. Once the Jenkins run is finished being collected there will be that one fucking issue left out. Irritates the hell out of my OCD.

I think they are going to continue to the end.

So hopefully they will place it in a Carey collection not where it was released.
