Learn audio with me!

Recommended Posts

Or learn audio from me. I already know it. Sort of.

And if you already know it too; well then, we've got nothing to talk about, do we? Get out of my face/house/daughter.

TENDRILS. TENDRILS EVERYWHERE

This is fantastic. Only checked out the first one so far. But I've played guitar for years and years and never did quite get the grasp of EQ.

Excellent! Thankyou. I was the same; I'd been doing music for almost a decade before I even had the guts to look at EQ.

If you find it useful, please spread it around to anyone you think might benefit. I know it's more of a specialised topic than a HEY WATCH THIS type video, though. :)

My stereo only has a bass knob and a treble knob. I think it needs a "middle" knob to qualify as an EQ.

My friend uses VSTs and says Izotope Ozone is the bomb. Is he insane or reasonable in his assessment?

Probably reasonable! It looks great. Expensive though, and I am a poor boy, so all the VST effects I use are either free or bundled. Reaper has a particularly amazing collection of bundled effects, including my favourite EQ, ReaEQ. But if I couldn't use that*, BlueCat have a great one, as do Melda, Variety of Sound and plenty of other companies.

Of course EQ isn't all Ozone does. It looks like a great one-stop option. But for myself, I'd have to be really impressed by the demo. It'd have to outstrip my current setup by a lot to justify the cost.

Perhaps I should break from my no-software rule and do an episode or two about how to make music while poor. The free stuff out there is just incredible. It's a shame I can't say I only use free products, since I almost always use at least something from either Kontakt 3 or Colossus, but those are from 2007 and 2005, so they're probably dirt-cheap nowadays (or, more likely, just not available). And my copy of Reaper is registered, but that's just to make myself feel better, since the free version is totally uncrippled.

*and there's no reason I couldn't; it's available as a free VST that works in anything

Yes, please.

My friend says to buy an issue of Computer Music because they have a stockpile of VSTs and VSTis and VST3s (I don't know what any of that means, I'm literally reading from a text on my batphone) that they have custom made for them by the software manufacturers that they just give away freely with their magazine on a double density DVD (8 GB of goodies, sez he). And Reaper is a nice DAW. It's not free but you can use it as long as you want in the demo mode and the demo mode is complete and never ends. So, it's free but you should pay for it, but it doesn't fuck anything up if you don't pay or pay a little late, sez he. Hi, Lou! he sez as well.

Okay, I have five hours of writing time before my next class so I might look at piecing together that info. I won't have internet access, but I can just leave any parts that need research blank. I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner; it's a definite niche. I've spent a lot of time arguing with friends who've convinced themselves they need some huge cash windfall to 'set up a studio,' but the entry requirements are so incredibly low.

JefE! Why has he forsaken us?

He has become a shut-in. No wait, a hermit? He has lost all sense of the world outside (no, that's the line from a sisters of mercy song). I don't know. I live about 30 minutes away from him and I haven't seen him since Walking Dead season 4 premiered. That's 6 bloody weeks. But i think while I've increased my drug intake, he's cut his down to nothing, the ungrateful bastard. He was fun to do drugs with too, but now, he just pretends he watches me while I do them. Never changes the look on his face (that disapprobation that would mock me if I were ever really aware of it). The worse thing to happen to any man is sobriety. I don't drink, though. No no no.

What's a JefE again?

Welp, I ended up writing a tutorial about dynamics compression instead. I seem to be working backwards through the all the bastard effects I've only recently come to grips with. I'll probably film it tomorrow.

The 'being poor' one will probably work better as a blog post anyway, so I'll get chipping away at it.

Sure do love your tutorials, Gwilym.

Slinker, tell JefE I says hullo if you ever see him.

We text all the time. He sends his fondest regards. He also said he wanted to include you and Tom on the "Venus" track he did back in the day. But then he left the forum in disgrace and never got back to doing the song. I badgered him until he gave it to me to use in the video I made for it (using Dean Motter's images). He recorded back in 2006, though, before he left. That's when we met, in 06 or 07. SO I don't know what happened to the plan.
