So, what now?

Recommended Posts

... numerous fans of the darker and more adult-themed stories the now-non-existent Hellblazer provided have been left with a hole in both their hearts and their reading habits… until now. (Dirk Manning)

F*ck off. Hellboy and BPRD have been doing the job for years now. So has 2000AD — at any given time 2000AD is running at least one strip that fits, often by once or future Hellblazer creators.

The article recommended three comics, one of which was the author's own upcoming project, the sample pages for which made it look like (to use the technical term) a trenchcoat ripoff.

...Tales of Mr. Rhee (say it aloud to get the pun)...

Yeah, you'd have to say it aloud.

So far, Gravel's a good catch. Kind of Hellblazer Unbound in a way (i.e. What if John was a combat magician) and I love Criminal Macabre. Tempted to grab Ten Grand

Criminal Macabre

I read some of this back in the day and quite enjoyed it, will have to dig back in - believe Niles has created quite the little world through a series of inter-connected minis.

Never really made up my mind about Gravel, it was typical Avatar gross-out porn for the most part but I always had a soft-spot for Ellis' work, when Wolfer took over the writing chores I lost interest.

If we get to the end of next year with no new Hellblazer at all then I'll be a very annoyed boy.

I don't think I'm reading anything exactly like Hellblazer. Probably the closest is Hoax Hunters (from Image), but that's more of a replacement for a book like Proof than HB, and is more in the Mike Mignola realm than the Hellblazer realm.

See, I wouldn't say Hellboy/BPRD is the same reading as Hellblazer.

Hoax Hunters isn't a perfect book, but I've been enjoying it for what it is.

Neither would I — the original target was "comics for people who miss Hellblazer". But I did cite Hellboy and BPRD immediately after referring to "the darker and more adult-themed stories the now-non-existent Hellblazer provided", so mea culpa. They're similar in flavour, let's say.

It's a shame Mike Carey's too busy to do more Carver Hale, really.

That fucking DC/He-Man Crossover nonsense is still trawling along and Constantine's all over that muck, fuckers better throw us a bone next year or I still won't be buying any of their comics.

I felt the very same way. It wasn't until his ongoing series that he really started to hit his stride as a character, but then I just lost interest.

funny, i thought Gravel was one of Ellis' throwaway characters because i read a couple of issues and was out on it right away.

That cover quote, by Pat Mills, seems to me tailor made for an amusing confusing segment on some Faux News show. Excellent indeed. :)

Oh, in tidying my recent comics I was reminded of Uncanny and The Darkness.

Goes without saying that Andy Diggle and David Hine could have used their storytelling powers on some decent Hellblazer

(fuck you Haterz of Diggle's Hellblazer, it was the last decent run on the book so nyah nyah nyah)

Both books have a degree of superheroicness about them, but central characters with a satisfactory degree of Constantinosity.

The Darkness final issue comes out this week, but will recommend the trades of Hine's arc.

Pat Mills will reach critical mass on this forum soon, and everyone will be into his work.

Doesn't he write a lot of stuff for the French market these days ? Every now and then he'd mention another new graphic novel for that market on his Facebook feed.

I only know of a couple: this Requiem Vampire Knight series he's been doing, and a spin off from that. The first Requiem collection (put out in an English edition by Heavy Metal - old skool or wot?) is all I've read, but it was pretty good. No Charley's War or RoBusters, but solid, entertaining and clever, and so way beyond all of the shite he spent the '90s churning out.

It looks like Phantom Stranger is in the reflection of the puddle...

“what if John Constantine was a [over-used word]?”

We already had the Brian Azzarello and Peter Milligan runs.

I'm not sure about the story. I'm sure it'll be a good story, but as far as being a Hellblazer replacement, I always liked John because of him being the working class mage. Turning him into a celebrity figure turns me off.
