  1. That's a good summation of Watt's character for sure- I guess I just like Giebelhaus's line delivery! Related sidebar- just rewatched the episode 'Collateral Damage' from season 3, where Watt's daughter gets kidnapped- O'Quinn is very good in it.

  2. While I'd generally agree that the supporting cast for Millennium left a little to be desired, you do seem to have overlooked Terry O'Quinn's Peter Watts, and Detective Giebelhaus, both of whom I thought were aces!

  3. Heh, fairs enuff!

See also: whatever the hell he, Neil Gaiman and Steven Moffat thought any of them were doing at any point along the chain of regrettable creative and stylistic decisions that led to the talking-to-himself bits of 'Nightmare in Silver'.

I was gonna say I thought Smith was up to his usual (good) standard as the Doctor in 'Nightmare in silver'- but I agree that he totally seemed to miss the point with the cyber-controlled version!

  4. Well I enjoyed that episode last week for sure- as I have this season in general.

In regards to the favourite new Doctor conversation all I can say is poor bloody Smith! Sure he tended to give a lighter performance but to dismiss him as 'wacky' I feel discounts some of the subtlety he brought to the roll. I also think his levity helped counteract some of the smugness and arrogance generally associated with the Doctor in a way Tennant, who I found to be excellent but could be pompous and/or maudlin in a way that makes stuff like Stolen Earth/Journeys End and Planet of the Dead borderline unwatchable, didn't. I certainly didn't feel that Smith ever 'lost sight of the character'.

Anyway, Capaldi's been great so far and could well wind up my favourite but as it stands my list goes:-

    Hurt

    Eccleston/Smith

    Tennant.

To each his own, what? ;)

  5. Read it. Not overly impressed. One point- is my eyesight really bad or did they miss Richard Corben from the rosta? Not that important I guess but they did seem to be trying to credit everyone...

  6. I practically never post on here but I do love lists so...

    Delano- Dead Boys Heart.

    Ennis- Confessional.

    Jenkins- Difficult Beginnings.

    Ellis- Locked.

    Azzarello- Lapdogs and Englishmen.

    Carey- The Gift.

    Mina- Pass.

    Diggle- The Smoke.

    Milligan- Suicide Bridge.

  7. Ahhhhh Mark,

Don't you just think that white-boy guitar driven indie rock is the way forward in regards to breaking the boundaries of popular music as opposed to the stale electronic beats of such limp-wristed posers as autechre, Richard D. James et al. Come to think of it isn't it true that all the truly innovative acts around at the moment have a strong Britpop influence. Now that I come to think of it it's entirely possible to reach the deduction that MENSWEAR were and indeed are the BEST BAND OF ALL TIME, would you concur with that?

Added to that I feel that snow is a highly underrated form of natural phenomena, and that the Shawshank Redemption is quite possibly the best film of all time (though it would of course be better if Sting played both the Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman roles).

    Any thoughts?

  8. Saw the Land of the Dead the other day, good clean zombie fun, managed to cram in a fair bit of gore considering it was a 15 cert. Still some of the the aesthetic concepts seemed to have been borrowed from the Dawn of the Dead remake (the armoured truck) which was a bit hmm, Romero stealing ideas from a recent copyist- shame.

Saw the Doom trailer on the big screen- this only makes it look like a bigger turd.

Addendum, Alien Res has Brad Dourif in it and so by definition cannot be absolute irredeemable shite, I'm under contractual obligation to say that- apart from that, well yeah- rip her to shreds.

  9. Favourite Comic Single Issue:- Sandman's '24 Hours'

Favourite Single TV Episode:- Millennium's 'Lamentation'- Lance Henriksen vs the Devil! Single-handedly sort of makes up for all the other crap Chris Carter has written methinks.

Favourite Soundtrack:- Natural Born Killers- though the Dylan song has woeful vocals.

    Bollocks, that was me.

  10. You know it's right about this point that I realise that most of my problems with Terminator mythology pertain to the over-budgeted straight to video part 3, ('I thought we stopped Judgement Day', 'Ah-ha that's 'cos you're not using studio executive logic!').

    And then I shut up.

  11. Gaaah, Unbreakable- found it to be a big pile of boring arse. Sixth Sense was allright but some arsehole high school mate of mine spoiled the ending for me- oh if I ever meet him again there's gonna be a conversation.... uh hey Mark how's it going?

Inconsistent films that I love- there must be a million ways you can take apart the Terminator.

  12. Cheers for the welcomes, in the unrelated news topic- I'm doing fine, though once again I found out that train journeys on even mild hangovers just aren't pleasant. I'm always up for tummy rubs, pooka. Oh Mark, have you checked the Boy's Own angst page on teletext- it's hilarious.... shall now wander the boards.

  13. Howdy,

My name's Ben, a casual comics reader who was entirely unaware of this Hellblazer thing until I was lured into the back of a white van by a long-haired frequenter of these boards, seduced by the promise of bon bons and tummy rubs. He then unleashed upon me an addiction for a certain sarcastic magic user you guys might be familiar with. While I'm not currently collecting the monthly title (I have no cash) I do have several of the trades, faves include Setting Sun, Freezes Over, Dangerous Habits yadda, yadda, yadda.

I felt I should post on the boards because I felt raped by the recent 'cinematic masterpiece' and need support to get through this trying time. Looking forward to getting along/violently disagreeing with you guys,

Will be back at some point...
