  1. My life has undergone so many drastic shifts, especially over the last 18 months, I wouldn't know where to begin. My Halloween display (remember Bob the vampire?) has become my all-consuming passion, along with rescuing small mammals and birds from shelters and bad situations. As a result of these activities, my house is full of dead wolves and live rats, as well as a real bare bones man named Fred.

Life just might be settling down a trifle, hence the interest in returning to Hellblazer at least, and possibly other comics down the road. So much has changed since I was last active in the comic world - classic Vertigo, how I miss you! For now I'll be stalking Hellblazer TPB lots on evilBay and trying to wrap my head around the idea of a de-aged JC on a superhero team. (Loved the first JLD TPB, but after that... not so sure).

  2. Miss me?

I've been away from comics for years, but recently a friend has been nudging me back. I decided that if I read nothing else, I'd like to finish up Hellblazer and replace my comics with TPBs. Thus, I've been gleaning info from the forum and doing so often enough that it felt un-neighborly not to stop in and say Hello.

  3. A question for the fans of Spooks (renamed MI-5 on this side of the pond, probably to sidestep any accusations of racism in the title):

BBCA addicted me hopelessly by showing the first two seasons in weekly doses. They have abruptly cut off my supply without any word as to when or if they will provide more. My choices are:

    (1) Pay an outrageous sum of money for R1 DVDs of the remaining seasons.

    (2) Console myself with the knowledge that as Tom was swimming away from shore in the S2 finale, he met up with a shark, jumped it, and drowned.

Someone, please have pity on a quivering addict with limited funds and tell me whether it's worth paying for what's ahead. No spoilers please, although I would appreciate knowing whether the S2 finale makes sense in the context of what follows. Either something critical was edited out for American TV, or else it didn't make a whole lot of sense.

  4. I've never known anyone whose mother died in childbirth either, but as I almost lost both of my cousins in the very last stages of their pregnancies, and because due to my own medical condition a pregnancy would kill me, this decision hits me closer to home than most abortion-related issues.

What's especially disturbing to me is that although the term "partial birth abortion" has no medical meaning, the procedure(s) it makes illegal are, to the best of my understanding, rare, and performed only when the mother is in grave danger. I remember seeing one heartbreaking interview with a pro-life couple who desperately wanted children, but who chose to undergo the procedure because the fetus had no chance of survival and it was killing the mother. In cases like this - admittedly, I doubt they're common - the Supreme Court has just ensured that both the mother and the fetus will die even though modern medicine has the power to save the mother. Someone please explain to me how this benefits anyone. Please. "Because Dubya's sky bully said so" is not an acceptable justification.

Canadians: Your country won't allow me to emigrate there because of my health, so .... do you know anyone looking to marry or adopt a cranky American liberal?

  5. Today I bathed one dog, one cat, and four rats. Ever try to hold a squirming hairless rat covered in shampoo? <insert greased pig joke here> It's not easy. Fortunately the other three were perfect little angels.

Now I have to clean a snake cage, lizard cage, and then I finally get to clean off. What a mess.

  6. What's the word on Eddie Izzards new US thing ?

IMHO, The Riches is promising but not quite firing on all cylinders yet. The tone is a lot darker than what the promos suggested. What's missing is any sense that the family is having fun with this new life. I get that maintaing the facade would be difficult, and that there would be plenty of tense moments, but the unrelenting darkness and tension gets a bit wearying without any "oh gee wow look at this" moments to give us an idea why they think this new life is worth fighting for. As presented, it would make a lot more sense for them to loot the house for anything hockable, grab the cash, and return to their itinerant lives. I think we're supposed to believe that conflicts with the rest of the Traveler community are responsible for their decision to hunker down, but if so, the show hasn't sold me on that idea. Nor has it explained to me why, even in her drugged out post-incarceration state, Minnie Driver's character isn't a smoother and more confident con artist. The kids are more effective than she is, which I'm not quite buying.

As it stands, good, and although not yet great, has lots of potential for greatness. Eddie Izzard is a joy to watch.

  7. Just saw a bunch of Oscar nominated movies and the question that lingers hardest in my mind right now is 'why the fuck has The Queen been nominated for Best Picture when Pan's Labyrinth has not?'.

I'd pick on the POS that is Little Miss Sunshine long before I'd go after The Queen, but I have to agree that Pan's Labyrinth is hands-down my pick of the year. Given that it's a subtitled fantasy film, it would never have won, but I would have loved to cheer it on nevertheless.

What makes Pan's Labyrinth more of a foreign film than The Queen anyhow?

That category is actually Foreign Language Film, not simply Foreign Film.

If it's any consolation, the two films that reap the greatest financial benefit from the Oscars are the winners of Best Picture and Best Foreign, so Pan's should still benefit considerably from the nonsense surrounding the little golden guy.

  8. After seeing Dreamgirls, I'm baffled at all the critical huzzahs it has received. Like The Devil Wears Prada, it's not a bad film, it's just a solidly average one that contains some better-than-it-deserves actors. In the case of Dreamgirls, there's an outrageously talented supporting cast that mostly goes to waste, sacrificed to no-cliche=left-untouched plots about the music industry and romantic travails, some decent musical numbers, and lots of very pretty costumes. And way too much Eddie Murphy. There are so many subplots stuffed into this too-long film that not one of them is well-developed, and the whole endeavor would have been much more entertaining if it had sacrified a good twenty minutes of running time.

That this movie has received the most Oscar nominations, and not any of a multitude of far better films, makes me :icon_cry:

  9. I'm with you there, Inca. I would have loved to see some of the profits from the splatterfest that was Passion of the Christ go up in smoke. After seeing Passion, all my interest in seeing Apocalypto vanished. My mind boggles at what a blood-fetishist like Gibson could do with a movie about the ancient Maya.

  10. Congrats, Wolvy!

I love and adore misspellings on eBay. I just won a lot of 210 prisms in the shape of "ice sickles," which sounds like a weapon in a Roald Dahl mystery. Or perhaps Dr. Zhivago. Either way:

"Watch out! My minions and I are armed with ice sickles, and we're coming to get you! By the time the cops catch us, they'll have melted and we'll get off scot free!"

  11. I haver to withdraw my opinion partially.

I just saw an episode of House, which didnt just fall out of line, but was also an excellent one anyway.

Who can guess which im refering to?

Gotta be Three Stories. My favorite episode of television, let alone House, ever. It was also my first episode of House, and I think it has helped me to forgive a lot of the formula and weak character development of the supporting cast. I'm also very fond of House vs. God and Failure to Communicate.
