  1. Detective Comics #879

Yet another solid issue from Snyder & Francavilla (I still can't believe I've heard multiple Batman fans slag off his art, it is excellent). The Jim Gordon Jr. story picks up, no doubt rushing to its conclusion before the impending REBOOT OF EVERYTHING THAT WILL FOREVER CHANGE EVERYTHING UNTIL IT NO LONGER DOES.

    Mystery Men #3

Still fun with good writing and art. If you liked any of Marvel's Noir books or The Twelve or old-timey superhero fun and intrigue, check this LS out.

    B+

    FF #6

An entire issue setting up the next issue in which we learn just how Black Bolt has come back to life, featuring less-than-good art. Total filler issue.

    Lil' Depressed Boy #5

Really fun series that hits all the expected notes-- this may be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your tastes. The current mood of the character is so perfectly captured throughout the issue and I like where the story is heading.

  2. Iron Man 2

Instantly forgettable. Mickey Rourke is the best thing about the film, Scarlett Johansson the worst.

Don Cheadle seemed miscast and unfit to wear Terrance Howard's medals.

    13 Assassins

The Takashi Miike remake of the 1963 semi-classic of the same name, it's a fairly straightforward samurai flick with the usual grotesque/sexual flourishes from Miike. Has a definite 7 Samurai feel to it and provides a really, really interesting look at tradition, honor, class, war, and the changing Japanese sociopolitical structure (it takes place at the end of the Edo period).

    Highly recommended.

Next up: Miike's Gozu, Zebraman, Sukiyaki Western: Django, and Crows Zero.

  3. The Dark Knight is probably a comfortable second, though, even with some niggling flaws in ... pacing (which is a rather more serious criticism, so far as I'm concerned, although not enough to undermine everything else which the film does very well indeed).

Totally understandable, as it is my chief criticism of Nolan's Bat films and one of several issues I have with Inception.
  4. Yup, that's the same article I was going to share as "summarizing my thoughts perfectly."

There was one other strong review that I read but I'm having trouble locating it... the author basically said the same things but added towards the end that maybe she initially overreacted and that given some time, the finale wasn't quite as horrible as she thought-- though she still didn't like it very much. I'll see if I can track it down as it's a nice, quick read.

  5. Lou, if you ever feel a little lost or like you're missing out on something with all of Mozza's metatextual writing, I heartily recommend the following sites for annotations and reviews (spoilers abound for the issues they cover; direct links to specific pages can be backtracked to the main site for more relevant articles):

The annotations page for Comics Alliance, which regularly feature Dave Uzumeri, arguably the best comics annotator consistently annotating:

Funnybook Babylon, where Dave Uzumeri posted his annotations before moving over to CA:

This guy started out well but then apparently gave up:

Mindless Ones. Like CA, they have several strong writers on staff and often do annotations:

Barbelith Underground, should be familiar to any Grant Morrison fan:

For the lazy, you could just stick with Dave Uzumeri's annotations (he does pretty much every Batman-related issue Morrison wrote) at Funnybook Babylon and later, Comics Alliance.

    Enjoy!

  6. Today I saw 2 previews in the theater that were fairly impressive: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (awesome efx) and the American remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (awesome trailer, though many will hate the Zep cover).

The latter looks like it will be a really good film, up to par with the original, which is comforting since I enjoyed the trilogy and thought the first film was the best of the three.

  7. Well, I meant crowded in the sense that Batman begins felt crowded to me at times - too many characters that needed servicing, and what little i liked of The Dark Knight was that they managed to avoid that.

    I, wha-- wait, whaaaaat?

Probably the best rendition of the Joker outside of Bruce Timm/Mark Hamill and an excellent movie to boot, and you barely liked it?!?

If there are better superhero movies than Nolan's Batman flicks, I haven't seen them. Hell, they might even be the best comic book films ever made...

  8. Game of Thrones delivered, The Killing did not.

The Killing's season 1 finale was an utter piece of shit: [ Spoiler : logic holes, cheap twists, and no real resolution. ] Seeing as how only 3 episodes are really good and the other 10 are pretty weak, I cannot recommend this series.

However, the glowingly positive reviews of the original Danish series (it was considered one of, if not THE, best show on TV by Brits when it premiered in the UK in January) have me interested enough to track down some subtitled DVD (rips)...

  9. Just finished the 2 adaptations of the first 2 Hedge Knight novellas from the ASoIaF universe-- they're both really solid. Faithful adaptations, very good art, decent pacing and action.

If you plan on reading the novellas though, start there and then read the comics.

Boys #55 This issue concludes the backstory of Butcher and The Boys, and serves as a sort of break before the beginning of the end. Still one of the best comics being put out there.

Invincible #80 Not sure why I still read this book...

  10. Given that this thread was started by Mick, I think I read its title and subtitle about 10 times, laughing hysterically each time.

    Still true.

What's good, everyone? I'm back and older than ever.

    Fuck Trace...

Yes, well, nice to see you too.

(It's strange how we joined around the same time and came back around the same time, maybe we're the same person?)

  11. Game of Thrones just gets better and better.

[ Spoiler : When Robb's wolf chomped on the bannerman's hand and he just stood there laughing with bloody stumps-- that was hardcore excellence. ]

Charles Dance is perfectly cast as Tywin Lannister. His intro into the series is one of the greatest scenes in television in past few years and his interaction in this episode with his other son is note-perfect.

Also, I love the guy they got as the court announcer-- his cadence, pitch, tone and overall delivery are unique and fitting for the impudent [ Spoiler : King Joffrey. ] Weird that we only hear him in his first "appearance" and see him for the first time in this latest episode.

    Best show on TV.

The Killing is also getting better after sagging a bit in recent episodes.

The latest episode being a character study and background revelation for our two intrepid heroes. Excellent stuff.
