    • Chew #3-#6 - Well, what can I say...this has to be my new favorite series.
    • Preacher #11-#12 - Like Hellblazer...great series I wish I had of bought when it came out.
    • The Dreaming #12 - Continues to be what one might expect of a Sandman spin-off
    • Finished the Luna Brothers' "Girls" - I found it dragged quite badly through the middle, but picked up towards the end. I found the ending to be a little anti-climatic and a bit of a let-down. Doesn't make me want to read "The Sword".

  1. Been a while. Busy, busy, busy.

    Chew #1 (Excellent!!)

    Preacher (Up to 9)

Fables #11 (Still not sure what I think of Fables as a whole, I did like the zombies though. It's seeming a little too much like soap-opera. Thinking I might try Grimm Fairy Tales instead, it might be more my speed.)

Fables: The Last Castle (Good story, better than the main series as of yet.)

The Dreaming #10 (I like it, but I'm a Gaiman fanboy)

Girls 16-18 (Still a little slow, but so far so good)

Hellblazer #35 (Have restarted using Qusoor's reading list as a basis since I was only 10, or so, in)

Gantz v2 and v3 (Surprising well written as far as Manga goes)

Trinity Angels #1 (Cheesy, light-hearted, but fun)

  2. I think it's Samael's comic shopping list from 1998.

You're not entirely wrong there. This is about when I stopped buying comics. With university and the lack of money associated with that, I'm trying to get caught up on things I used to love or always wanted to read. The Dreaming, Books of Magic, Hellblazer, Preacher, stuff like that. I do have some newer stuff in my rotation as well. Girls isn't that old. LOL

    Enjoy any of them, Samael?

Yes. Girls is a little slow, but enjoyable. The Dreaming is nice, very Gaiman-style as one might expect of a direct Sandman spinoff. Not entirely sure what I think of Fables yes, but so far it's bad, but perhaps not quite what I expected. School Bites is a guilty pleasure. It's a silly little manga-style web comic by Holly Golightly that's still running (http://www.schoolbites.net/).

  3. Shoot something tasty!

From today's hike (yes, I know, not mountain bikes, but it is still Kananaskis Country!). GPS app screwed up but I think it was a total of 6 miles of ground and over 2300 feet of vert covered. Found some fossils too! Nihahi Ridge Trail.

AWESOME shot!! Get any good fossils? I used to collect fossils once upon a time, still pick the odd one up. I do have hundreds of pounds of fossilized ocean bed marking the end of my driveway (The usual grey stuff found here in Alberta). You can see lots of fossilized shells in it. Friends had it in their garden an wanted to get rid of it. Just happened to be a tractor working across the road from them that could lift them in to the back of a truck. Good luck for me. :boogie:

  4. Hello Samael. Nice name. Does it have to do with the band?

Indeed. I almost exclusively use band names or demon names for UIDs. This was a nice overlap. I like the band as well, at least their early stuff like Worship Him, Blood Ritual, Ceremony of Opposites and Passage. I'm not as familiar with the more recent stuff but have liked what I heard. First thing most people thing of is the creature from the first Hellboy movie.

  5. Heya! Where do you live now? You should come back soon for a pedal session.

I would dearly love to do the JP/CH ride, but the problem is two-fold: as an older newb guys my age who XC don't like to wait around for stragglers (although I'm shocked at how fast my conditioning and climbing technique are improving), and most of the guys I ride with are gravity addicts.

I'm up in Athabasca now. We do try to get down to Calgary a couple times a year, but we have family visiting this year so travel is limited to less than I would like. I hear you about the age, I've never been an overly strong climber but consistent. At nearly 40 I simply don't recover as fast as I did in my mid 20's, when I started mountain biking. As an ex-BMX rider it was a learning experience. It takes me far longer to do the initial climb on that ride than anyone I've ridden it with. That ride is so far out and so worthwhile that most people I've gone with are just happy to have someone to ride with. Over the years I've learned my limits and how to pace myself so I don't bonk out.

  6. Oh yeah, that is the thing. :)

Is the grass all short because of animals, or is it the short growing season and a snow blanket, do you think?. It just looks like one of our high country farms, that would be running 30 00 sheep, to me.

Probably a combination. Due to the elevation, over 2200M at the peak, there is a short season in that area where there will usually be snow on the ground well in to June and it's not unheard of to start getting snow and freezing temperatures in mid August. The elevation around the top of the trail is near or above the tree line so all that grows there is grass, lichens, scattered shrubbery and the such. It tends to be cold at night and is often quite windy in the day. Not ideal conditions for growing tall. The grass and weeds can get very tall around the trail head, where the elevation is much lower and there is shelter from the wind. There are just no pictures of that.

  7. Hello, I'm from Canada and have been reading comics for well over 20 years, with a break in between when I was in university and had no money or time for comics. I came across this site through John Goodrich's Hellblazer page when I was researching what order I should read things in. After getting to issue 10, I felt I was missing something, only to discover I should have read some Swamp Thing before starting Hellblazer in order to actually understand what was going on.

Initially I rediscovered my love of comics with the Web stuff such as Freak Angels by Warren Ellis and School Bites by Holly Golightly. I know School Bites is a silly little thing, but I find it fun none the less. Back in the day, I was a Vertigo fanboy and it probably made up 95% of my collection...really anything not mainstream and NOT superhero and anything Gaiman related I could find. These days, I'm still a classic Vertigo Fanboy but lately have been buying stuff mostly from Avatar, IDW, Zenoscope, Antarctic, Boom!, Dynamite and some others. I'm reading primarily "mature"-oriented stuff like Hellblazer, Preacher, Crossed, Girls, Walking Dead etc. but am not as opposed to the superhero stuff as I once was and plan to eventually read story arcs "Marvel Zombies", "Blackest Night" and "Fear Itself". I'm also a big fan of European comics such as The Incal, Metabarons, Weena, Daffodil, and stuff from Moebius and Enki Bilal. My favorite authors are Neil Gaiman, Warren Ellis, Garth Ennis, David Lapham, Frank Miller, etc.

This is myself and my oldest son hiking along the shore of the Athabasca River in Jasper National Park, 2 years ago, but there are not a lot of great pictures of me. Gotta love that milky blue glacier water.

My wife does not read comics and considers them silly. Oh well.

  8. You would be doubly so, if you posted pictures of yourself in mid-down-slope-career, I think. Exotic animals chasing you in same, would score triple points no doubt, because we are not dis-similar to so many children at the circus, here. Or just pictures of some nice trail you have rid.

We also have a thread for the saying hello in.

No pictures unfortunately it seems we always forgot the camera on the more epic rides and never bothered too much on the local rides. Last time we rode in Bragg Creek, however, we did see free-range cattle. That was a little disconcerting...to fly in to the middle of a herd of cows in the middle of the forest, as I remember, I nearly hit one of them.

These aren't my pictures, but they are nice images of the Jumpingpound Ridge/Cox Hill ride I mentioned.

  9. Just got a "bro deal" on some Maxxis High Rollers. Am taking them out for a spin at the Canmore Nordic Centre (site of many cross country ski events, including the 88 Olympics) on Sunday. I have really hated the stock Specialized Eskar ti(y)res.

Are you still liking the Highrollers? I had a set on my first DH bike and was never super impressed with them (2.5/2.7 combo). Sure, they certainly corner like crazy but such brutal rolling resistance. I replaced them with WTB Weirwolf's, Mike Weir's signature tire, and found them worse, and the cornering sucked, especially on hardpack...but they climbed nice. LOL I don't have much opportunity these days for DH riding so I got ride of them and run a fully XC frame fitted with burly comps so I can still take it in to the mountains if given the opportunity. (http://rpjj.ca/bikes/) A website I maintain for insurance purposes...my bike is kind of dated now, but was cutting edge at the time. :mong: Right now I run IRC Serac UST tires and they're probably the best tires I've owned. They climb and corner like a demon, shed mud well and most importantly these days, roll nice on hard-pack/pavement.

Nice pictures BTW...makes me pine for Kananaskis. I LOVE C.O.P. I'll date myself a bit...it was only $28 for a season pass for the bike park when I first went there.

  10. Bull?. Cattle beast, Moose, deer?.

Please make more posts about your fun days out. I enjoy them inordinately.

Cattle. Although on a drive through the mountains recently we saw a bull elk. Rack was 5 feet across and still in velvet.

If you haven't ridden it, I strongly suggest the Jumpingpound Ridge to Cox Hill loop in Kananaskis. Easily the best ride I've ever done in the Rockies!!! I used to try to get out there a couple times a year, but then moved from Calgary and have only managed to get back once...3 years ago. :(

Pick up this book as well, if you can find one for a decent price.
