I got my answer after reading Son of Man. It makes most sense for me. John carved a sigil into Ellie's soul. But like a scar, it heals over time.

This has been bugging me for a while. How come Chantinelle was found in hell during Paul Jenkin's Difficult Beginnings (the one where John tricked her into having sex with him to regain his badness) even though she still had the sigil that John cut into her soul to protect her from the devil? Wouldn't that sigil destroy her if she entered the infernal realms?

This has been bugging me for a while. So during Garth Ennis' run on Hellblazer, we saw John carve a masking sigil into Chantinelle's soul to protect her from demonic pursuit. The catch is that she could never return to hell as the sigil would destroy her. However, during Paul Jenkin's run on Hellblazer, specifically on Difficult Beginnings, John finds Chantinelle hiding in hell. Was this ever explained by the writers?
