  1. Yes. Though, the footnotes really bothered me. I loved the intent of creating a library of fictional books based in that world (and I'd love to see some follow up of that device, ala Borges), but I'd have rather she added that as an appendix in back instead of littering the story. It really broke the narrative flow for me.

Haven't read the Stephen Hunt book though.

Anyway, so the movie is actually all three books jammed together? I thought it was going to be a movie trilogy. Well, no wonder it was a mess.

Of course, them having to work so hard to remove most of the "offensive", anti-organized religion elements of the series must've butchered any worth to the story.

I might eventually see it on DVD, maybe. I'm not very impressed by the reviews, which pretty much say they made it as dull as can be so it doesn't create too much controversy. Of course, over here in the States, it's still a huge deal, because parents fear that it will encourage their children to read the books (heaven forfend!), making this movie take very much the roll of Satan in a Christian pantheon.

Just had to go and pull the books off the shelf and flick through them. And then I googled.

You are right - it is a trilogy of films.

And I was wrong, the film has concentrated on the first book.

In my defence, I read these books years back when they first come out and just had to remind myself of the plot of the second and third books. Obviously the plot of the first book has remained in my mind as the bulk of the story. Take from that what you will.

However, the film still felt rushed, the characters had no background and as you will find out while reading - the background is important. I'll say no more on that and look forward to your thoughts.

Ever read Cloud Atlas? Because I'd recommend that one too. Very different from the others I suggested but an absolutely masterful piece of writing.

  2. I've started Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials Trilogy.

    It really is excellent.

I went and saw the film on Saturday and it does not get close. Too rushed, no character development, loses all its depth. But that's what happens when they stuff 3 books into 2 hours or so.

I recommend The Court of The Air by Stephen Hunt, also excellent.

And have you read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell?

  3. A lot of us over here are of European decent, and we're celebrating our heritage by pretending we're still in Europe (You know none of these fairs are celebrating what the Romanians were doing during the medieval era either, he he*)....with emphasis on the idealized British version...very Arthurian.

It appeals to the D&D players. D&D is American.

But, yes, there are lots of medieval fairs in America. There's one in my hometown of Holly, Michigan that's quite popular....and we're just a small town.

*It was a very important time for us Romanians, in fact! heh

Ah. I see. Well, you know, England did have the medieval era all sewn up.

Arthur was Ok... but a bit - you know... unexciting. Even with Merlin.

Give me Robin of the Hood anyday. A nice little hero who leaves his noble standing and fights on the side of the peasants ;)

    Damn. I have French blood.

  4. I assume you mean your own address, for the Secret Santa exchange? Just PM it to user Mickey Eye, he'll handle the rest.

    Good luck with that paper.

Thanks. Can't believe I posted this question in this thread (emphasis on novice). My brain must be shot to pieces. If it's Sunday - it must be time for 'time to clear my mind'.

    And thanks for the luck.

My friend and I at the Medieval fair a little while back. I'm dude on the left as most already know.

Haven't been to a medieval fair in a while. Have them a lot around my area - re-enactions of battles type thing. Always good fun - lots of fruity wine and guys with swords is always good for my soul.

    But America?

You have medieval fairs in America?

My knowledge of American history is really poor. What exactly was happening in America during the medieval era?

  5. Dropkick murphys anyone?*

I liked them a few months ago, "Shipping up to Boston" is the only song that still hits the spot for me.

I haven't got the time to go through this whole thread right now. Wish I did. I'll be back.

Music... well. I could live without comics but I could never LIVE without music.

Just read over a couple of the last pages on this post and re: Dropkick ... all that 'Irish' punk is the best sound in the world for gig scenarios and 'knees-ups' but it is not what I'd listen to generally.

Gogo Bordello is an amazing good laugh too. Saw them this year at Reading and best Festival laugh I had.

AND now... we are talking. Although I still prefer SOAD. One of the only bands on my MUST-SEE-list I still have not seen live.

Anyone heard Hum? I'll never shake that band.

  6. Re: Pogues

Ah - many fond hours relating the Guiness diet story to all and sundry when I was younger. "You can live on Guiness y'know. Yeh, Shane MacGowan does."

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, "She said she was 40?".

Red looks like a preacher in that pic, I say.

Actually Red looks like he works in the Geology department or possibly the Physics. No, not dishevelled enough for Physics. Definitely geology.

And thanks. I am. And I get it all the time.

People used to think I was still at school and pushing my brothers around in a pram when they were actually my sons. Mind you, I did have them young, started at 19 but it worked out well. Very well. The guy with the longest dark hair is my oldest and a Hellblazer reader. The guy with the long blonde hair has gone over to manga.

  7. I is the one in the purple pajama top or red top. All the guys with the long hair are my oldest boys. And the littlest 'un is my #3 son. The girl with the black hair is son #1 girlfriend of 5 years. Partner is one on right of Reading 2005 with mouth wide open.

Actually we all got our mouths open. Not sure what that was about. Someone must have been throwing beer in our direction or something.
