  1. Yeah, the bit where he shot himself wasn't particularly clear storytelling - I had to read the scene twice before I got what was going on.

Denmark Street (or Tin Pan Alley as it's known) is just off the Charing Cross Road in the centre of town. Known for its association with music (you could imagine Mucous Membrane hanging around the area in the 70s), it was also the original location of the Forbidden Planet comic shop. A nice touch by Mike on both counts.

  2. We're in the process of updating the trailer at the moment. I'll post a link when it's online.

It's my first film as co-producer, but I first got involved in the project as cinematographer, and I've worked on other films as cameraman.

We've got a basic website up at the moment, but if there are any web designers out there who think they could do better, please get in touch - although bear in mind this is a deferred payment/profit share project (ie. no up-front payment).

We're also looking out for designers to help out with poster design, etc.

  3. Now, can someone explain to me the offside rule in clear and simple English (preferably in 10 words or less...)?

I did an "idiot's guide to..." search on Google, but I'm obviously too much of an imbecile to understand.

I've never really followed football, but work demands that I at least have a basic knowledge of the rule.

    Cheers!

  4. I think most console owners are casual gamers who whip on a game for a quick 20 minute session, or to play with a mate. and so games are simplified in that way.

On the other hand when I put on a game I expect to be stuck at the 'puter for a good few hours, and don't mind spending the time necessary to learn the skills needed to get the most out of a complex game.

  5. "Warrior Sisters". A swords-and-sorcery flick I'm working on at the moment. We're still in post-production and it doesn't have a distibutor yet, so you probably won't have heard of it. It had a few write-ups in the horror/fantasy magazines when we were filming, but it's taking ages to get the CGI completed.

  6. Veggie bacon can be nice - there's lots of different types, which vary in flavour and texture as much as different types of meat do.

    Same with sausages and veggie-burgers.

I prefer Redwood's veggie range, although I'm not one for meat-replacements in general.

    Mmmmm, veggie spam.....

Gah! Why can't I post the image directly?

  7. >QUOTE: JohnMcMahon

    >even more worrying is the fact that early murmurs on the next Morrowind >game suggest that it might be consoled down!!!

    Nooooooooooooo!

Even if this practice continues (and it will, given the financial considerations in doing so), I think I'll still buy the PC versions while the option is available.

I must admit to also owning an Xbox and GBA, but nothing beats sitting down half an inch from a 22 inch pc monitor at 1600x1200 resolution at full graphics quality with a decent 5.1 sound set-up. And I still can't get used to joypads - give me a keyboard and mouse any day.

And being able to download patches, updates and mods is a major benefit over consoles. I loved the original Thief games but it was the ingenious level design of some of the fan missions that cemented the game as a classic in my mind.

I've still got Deus Ex: Invisible War on my hard drive, but I keep getting distracted by playing the original Lemmings in preference. Sums it all up, really.

  8. I'm with Mark on this one.

I always wondered how they shared the writing for Good Omens - it was a great idea to match the two writers together.

I still think that Gaiman's comics are far superior to his novels - I consider myself fairly well-read on mythology (going so far as to feature concepts of mythology as part of my university dissertation), and I enjoyed some of his short stories - maybe it's just that he's at the top of his field in comics, but that he's entered a whole new game, and there are far better writers of proper literature.

But then I'm a miserable old sod who hasn't enjoyed anything that has come out since the late nineties, so what do I know.

  9. I put it down to the art at the time, but I found it really difficult get into Warren's run. It seemed like it had all the ingredients for great Hellblazer, but it didn't quite gel to me.

    >QUOTE (andy):

    >Honestly it was all the little things in "Haunted" that made the story for >me. The bits of the history of London, the scenes of random violence, the >backstories of the cannon fodder...the rest was just a basic revenge tale >that had been done before by Derek Raymond.

    Summed up quite nicely.

I thought I would be glad when Az****llo took over, but c'est la vie.

  10. Yay!

Although being disappointed by the latest sequels to Thief and Deus Ex I'm trying not to get too excited by the prospect.

Games these days ain't what they used to be. They all seem to be dumbed down for the console crowd.

Last classic game: Morrowind, and that was a couple of years ago.

  11. Sausages wrapped in bacon. I love 'em B)

I know we had this discussion last year but why do we only have them at christmas? It's weird ain't it.

Well, I have bangers wrapped in bacon quite often.

But then again I'm vegan, so they're not proper sausages, and not proper bacon.

Hang on, shouldn't this be in the food thread...?

Anyway, back on topic - bah humbug and all that.

  12. Ok, so what about killing off the lead character?

It'd completely change the tone of the book, and doesn't really interest me, but an interesting demise for JC plus his follow-up "adventures in hell" would be another way forward.

  13. Wouldn't like to see Chas offed, but wouldn't be too annoyed if Chas's whole family gets killed. In fact, why not do a Felix Leiter/Xander Harris and have Chas physically and permanently mutilated in some way. That could screw John up even more than just being killed off and forgotten about.

  14. Nah - like most places the town centre is now pretty much a ghost town, replaced by the out-of-town Bluewater shopping centre.

The only redeeming feature of being in Dartford is that it's close enough to London without being IN London, if you get my meaning. 40 minutes and I can be at Charing Cross, or 45 minutes and I can be on the Kent coast. Must take a trip to Cliftonville one of these days, see if it resembles anything like the Hellblazer depiction.

  15. Thanks for the welcome!

QUOTE: Fellow Kent man too! Where do you shop?

er....Scotland, would you believe?! I'd pretty much given up on comics stores, and I've had nightmares trying to keep subscriptions going- so I decided to go mail order with Forbidden Planet. Of course what I didn't know is that there are 2 completely separate companies calling themselves Forbiddden Planet, and I went with the Scottish one. I don't read a lot of comics, so I struggle to meet the minimum required monthly order at most places for a standing order, but FP are more relaxed about it. The downside is I get my comics on monthly basis, so I'll be a couple of weeks late in piping in with my thoughts on the latest issue. I get to Incognito in Canterbury whenever I can, although I'm based in Dartford so it's a bit of a trek. I've introduced a mate of mine to Hellblazer, and he's found a few Swamp Things and Hellblazers in the 50p bins at Incognito. I assume you use one of the Canterbury stores?

QUOTE: would it be too rash of me to presume you got your nickname from one of the great comics of the 90's - Starman?

Yup! Actually, when I was a youngster I wrote and drew comics for my own enjoyment, and Jack Starr was the main protagonist (kind of like a more anarchic Plug from the Beano, but whom in my mind has grown up with me).

  16. I voted 8, the art was pretty great all round, even from Frusin (although the less said about the Swampy splash page the better).

The first third definitely read like Ennis (I'm sure the art helped on that count), but the second third didn't quite sit right with me - as much as I loved the idea of seeing her again, it didn't feel like I was reading Jamie's Zed. As for the final section, I thought it was great, and want more Manco NOW!

I'm really looking forward to seeing what Mike and Leonardo have to offer in the coming months, more than I have for a long time. Mission accomplished!
