  1. hmm....

John Smith (yeah, it's his real name!) was excellent on that one issue of H.B., but "Scarab" was a travesty, and he never showed his face again after that.

I started a thread on the old Forum asking about him, and the best I got in reply was that "he's probably writing for '2000 AD'."

    re-up!!!!

yeah... he wrote 4 2000 ad. Christian-- do you live on the west coast?

  2. I think the discussion took place on Forum B, which was combined with Forum A and destroyed, so that only this Forum, Forum C could exist....

Anyway, we had quite a few discussions about "What the hell happened to John Smith?".

The discussions were started after I found the entire "Scarab" mini-series in a dollar box. Thinking "Smith was amazing on that issue of H.B., these comics must be mind-blowing."

Well, they weren't. In fact, they read like early-90s Image comics.

As far as we can tell, John Smith channeled all of his talent, wrote H.B. #51, thought he had more creativity, tried to write "Scarab", realized he used everything up on H.B. #51, and has gone away never to return to comics.

I always wonder about these writers who write one or two series that are absolutely mind-blowing. You think, "I can't wait to read more of their work!". And then you discover that they have absolutely no talent on any other series they ever wrote.

    It just doesn't seem right!

I thought Indigo Prime was good.

On another level, isn't issue #51 the key issue for all you "John is bisexual" fanatics?

  3. Well... this question can be answered on two levels . . . the most disturbing thing to happen in the comic was that whole bondage thing in ashes to dust, seconded by the dog fucking episode.... but they were disturbingly wrong for the character. . .

on an actually disturbing level . . . for myself it'd have to be the scene with john's dad and the family man...

  4. I like the art on this cover much better.

Although, the anal in me says, "A cover artist and style should not change in the middle of a story-arc!"

I agree, but at the same time the realist in me says "if something is universally acclaimed as shit, let it be changed before it is driven completely in to the ground."

  5. If only Tim Burton would channel the spirit of Dick Van Dyke to be a front-man for loans offered to Frank Miller.....and then add the power of Tom Cruise multiplied by the sheer ability of Al Pachino! And how about that Gene Wilder?

    Yes, I understand!!!

Dick Van Dyke: She-ra (just cuz his last name is dyke)

Frank Miller: writes the script and so on

    Tom cruise: Orko

    Al Pacino: Skeletor

    Gene Wilder: Adam

    Tim Burton: Directs

But yet, I ask you, what man is he man???? Keanu Reeeeeeeves. :):):):):);)

  6. Nergal also showed up in a few issues of Doug Wheeler's Swamp Thing set after John had lured him to Heaven.

I'm wishing we never see Nergal or The First of the Fallen again unless someone can do something really original with the characters.

    Amen!!!!

Both are far too D & D for Hellblazer (now in a Warlord cross-over, on the other hand, they would be parfait).

  7. All comics on disc? NO! It eventually really hurts my eyes to read on a computer for too long, and it's too expensive to print out every new comic I want to read.

I do see your point though and it will probably have to happen....but egads!

I agree. Hundreds of comics on disk is one of those things that sounds like a good idea, but I would never actually get the same enjoyment from reading a computer screen.

  8. Well, then legislate for what actually constitutes a proper safe smoking room for places then. It's that simple. Pubs and other places should at least get the chance to bring in the facilities to cater for smokers without affecting any staff or other patrons.

It won't be cheap and most won't bother, but it would be much fairer. A blanket total ban without even allowing a safe smoking area is just wrong.

I don't smoke, I just think people should be allowed to if it does not bother others. I am actually more bothered by passive smoking outside waiting for a bus than anywhere else and that is not being legislated against. I still have to stand inline getting smoke blown into my face....

The joke being that more thought has gone into this message board on the subject than the current legislation.

  9. Actually, second-hand smoking damage is yet to be conclusively proven by any independent study - the leading studies that are usually used to support this kind of thing have been done in dubious conditions at best.

Newspapers like to take bits of major studies and tout them as fact long before they're proven - or, perhaps worse, without even paying any attention to the finer points of statistics.

    ...

I can't believe this is what I'm delurking over. Oi.

It's just logical, though...breathing smoke is bad...this is proven. The same smoke that comes out of the ass end of the cigarette comes out of the tip. There are many cases where the family of a second hand smoker has breathing problems. I doubt this is a coincidence.

I don't understand why some smokers seem to feel that smoking in public is their god-given right.

Its more fear of the morals police than god-given rights.

  10. Find the "Punisher:The End" one-shot if you want a REALLY good "what if?" Punisher story! Punisher doesn't just kill a bunch of super heroes and super villains. Track it down and see what happens in that book, I guarantee you will not be disappointed!

Co-sign on that recomendation. "Punisher: The End" is one of my favorites, followed by "the Cell" (which reads like a prequel to "the end").
