  1. As an American who loves our football (as well as ya'lls...aka soccer) I have the utmost regard for rugby players. However I would like to respond by proposing a little hypothetical. If you took a week to teach Brian Urlacher or Teddy Bruschi the ins and outs of rugby and two equivalent Rugby heroes a week to learn our Football and threw pads on them, then switched their places for a game, I fear two things would happen. First, the ruggers in pads would be crushed on the field by imposing runeers like Jerome Bettis or Jamal Lewis, to say nothing of pulling guards. On the other hand, Mr. Bruschi and Urlacher would more than likely have snapped a few rugby players in halfsies and have been sent off for foul play.

The weight and size ratio plus the different types of tackling, blocking, and significantly larger percentage of head on collisions makes American football far more physically violent than rugby ever dreamed of being.

    UMMM. timmy like goth ladies!

Have ya'll checked out the excellent documentary at the end of the collectors DVD of the Crow? Lots of great stuff in there about the various inspirations upon Mr. O'Barr's masterpiece. I know Lou K and I have pondered this in the distant past.

  3. On the Richter scale of swearing, "sod" is the impact made by an ant falling off a blade of grass

Oh OK....now what if I added "o-mites" to it huh? :)

I checked the dictionary where it is a shortened version of "sodden" and implies a kind of slow minded person who's thought process is slowed down as if by H2O saturation. Is that the implication over yonder on the isles?

  4. Here's a strange view: I would date a former prostitute but not a stripper. Why? Because strippers have a choice about stripping and are often head cases, and prostitutes are normally driven to prostitution through desperation, at least in this country. A former stripper might still be a dim bulb or a loon, a former hooker is most likely very repentant and probably has kicked a drug habit.

Having worked with strippers and former strippers (at work and at uni), I have to say that you're talking complete bullshit when you sum them up as being "often head cases" or "dim bulbs." A former policewoman could be a dim bulb or loon.

For some people it's just an easy way to make plenty of money. Hell, I'd strip if I had the tits for it.

The local strip club (which isn't local, it's in Post Falls Idaho which is about 70 miles away) actively recruits from the local colleges and I know any number of girls who have used it as a way to pay for text books or tuition when the Federal Aid money they were counting on didn't come through, or there parents weren't able to contribute as much as they'd hoped to some year, or something else unforseen comes up. It's not something I would do personally (or at least it's not something I think I'd do, I guess you never know until you hit a situation dire enough to make you consider it), but that's a personal choice and has more to do with my more "shrinking violet" personality than anything else. I think you can't generalize people by their line of work, some are doing it by choice but some just don't see any choices that look better.

I would like to think that the seemingly self-critical "shrinking violet" would be better said by the self-affirming "still holding on to some semblance of morality".

And much of the sex industry is run off the backs of the disadvantaged all over the world...in my opinion this is it's greatest evil. But it comes down to a moral decision to participate in the industry when you are not kidnapped, forced at gunpoint etc as many are in the developing world.

  5. you're talking complete bullshit when you sum them up as being "often head cases" or "dim bulbs."

Hell, I'd strip if I had the tits for it.

And thus Charlie's point is made! :p

I must confess that I would not shut the door on a relationship with an ex-stripper, an ex-prostitute, or an ex-adult film performer. But note the EXs. She would have to be remorseful and repentant of those lifestyles. My major concern however wouldn't be with her medical health but her emotional/ mental health. There would be so much baggage that she would be carrying on the inside. But as Spider described, if we made a connection, if she really "got" me and I "got" her I would be willing to move mountains to be in a relationship with her. After all, I'm not exactly the pick of the litter.

  6. Japan may well win with the "lighthearted" definition of crazy. But if you open it up to a more "dark" definition there is no comparison, not even the Good Ol' US of A can top Japan.

    see "helicopter man"

    see "Nanking"

    see "Hentai Anime"

see the obsession with bondage and school girls....

Fellow Americans...have you seen the hilarious Japanese gameshow/reality show on the Spike channel where everyday people are made to run nutty obstacle course type events? The best part is the dubbed dialogue. Genius. During breaks and at the end of each program did you notice "Beat" Takeshi Kaneshiro as the nutty samurai garped host? Highly recommended!

  7. I'll be picking it up today, but if this is the best introduction to Constantine's character then it's even more annoying that Vertigo have released it in impulse-purchase-unfriendly hardback format!

I have noticed that even the Vertigo paper trades are a mite expensive. Usually the $24.99 hardcover gets traded for $19.99 so in some cases the hardcover for $5 more is worth it. Now you poor sods over there paying 17 pounds that is painful since at an exchange rate of 1.90 it actually turns out to be about $32 US OUCH!

I hope the use of the word "sod" isn't offensive.
