  1. Yes.

Why don't the [over-used word]s just apply to go on Big Brother? They're so desperate for viewers, I'm sure they'd appreciate a little bloodshed.

I'll tell you one thing the British and US governments should have done months ago - issued an official warning to its citizens not to travel to Iraq.

British and US citizens stupid enough to go to Iraq get exactly what they deserve.

Excepting those in an official army capacity and volunteer charity workers, of course.

  2. If my baby is born after 23 October (I think that's the sign switch date), he or she will be a Scorpio.  ... Is that typically a recipe for screaming, mayhem and murder?

    This man would say yes.

  3. I truly think that in this case as in all cases in this thread, bringing in Stone's movie is a diversion and a waste of time.

Stone's movie is responsible for several widely-held misconceptions about Kennedy's death, so it does seem relevant to this discussion but yes - maybe we should forget about it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems the real question here is, would a rifle that could have caused any of Kennedy's wounds firing a round or rounds containing gunpowder available and in use during the early 1960s have been able to emit smoke that could have been seen by the witnesses that said they saw it at the time of the assassination?

The question is: did gunpowder changed so drastically between 1963 and 1991 that it once would have created sufficient smoke to be picked up by the peripheral vision of witnesses whose attentions were all focused on Kennedy's motorcade but by the time of 1991 had been altered to produce so little smoke that even a professional film camera was unable to capture it onscreen?

  4. I think Rosacarnis made some important veiled remarks through Kit which she meant more than might be obvious.  She says "I've waited for you long enough, God knows."  And later, "Here's to us, John.  And to posterity."  When he asks, "Posterity?", she replies, "Oh yes.  I'm in for the long haul, mister."

I'd say the crazy bitch really thinks she's in some kind of an ongoing relationship with John that will continue after the day of delusion ended.

Nah, I think she was still "in character" when she said that. I don't see why she expects John to maintain a romantic relationship with her when she's training their kids to kill him over and over...

If she wasn't in character, she could've just meant that she intended to make John's life Hell for years to come.

  5. A rifle using modern theatrical blanks?  I don't think that proves anything in regards to real rounds with real early 1960s gunpowder.  Plus, a camera sees differently than the human eye (generally less well), so this says very little about what live witnesses looking at the grass knoll might have seen.

A camera pointed directly at a man firing a gun that takes up a good quarter of the screen should get a better view of the smoke than some bystander seeing - quote - "a flash of light or smoke or something which caused me to feel like something out of the ordinary had occurred."

  6. The quote function appears to be fucked for this post, so I'll use the magic of italics.

    JOSH SAYS:

I'd say the author of this dubious syllogism has a higher opinion of the U.S. government than history demonstrates or that is possible for any government.

    I SAY:

"Any" government would find it impossible to fire a bullet into a side of ham until they found one that was more impacted?

    Hey, there's an idea!

    JOSH SAYS:

Interesting that these folks mentioned a "what if" situation where more bullet metal is found in a JFK wound than could have come from nearly pristine "magic bullet" CE 399? This happened, with the metal found in John Connolly's wrist.

    I LAZILY CUT AND PASTE:

    http://mcadams.posc.mu.edu/wound3.txt

QUOTE FROM THE ABOVE TEXT: First, however, I closely examined the fragments of the bullets removed from Kennedy's head, from Connally's wrist, and from the automobile. Neutron activation analysis* revealed that the wrist fragments all came from bullet 399. All the other bullet fragments, from the Presidents brain and from the floor of the car, came from the head bullet. No other bullets were represented in the car.

Note from James; This site suggests the following application for Neutron activation analysis (my emphasis):

    1. Archaeology

The use of neutron activation analysis to characterize archaeological specimens (e.g., pottery, obsidian, chert, basalt and limestone) and to relate the artifacts to sources through their chemical signatures is a well-established application of the method.

Again, the following quote has my emphasis:

QUOTE FROM THE ABOVE TEXT: But what was the total weight of the metal scattered through the Governor's chest, wrist, and thigh?

Of the two fragments recovered from the Governor's wrist, the larger was found to weigh 0.5 grain (5H72). The smaller one plus the flakes of metal remaining in his wrist might account for a like weight. This gives us a total of about one grain for the wrist. What about the chest and thigh fragments? Dr. Shires, who noticed the chest fragment on X-ray, never estimated its weight, but he spoke of it as being the same general size as the fragment embedded in the femur. The weight of this fragment was estimated as "a fraction of a grain, maybe, a tenth of a grain" (6H106, 111). If we add to these two fragments the flake observed just under the skin in the thigh wound, we have a total weight of perhaps 0.5 grain in the thigh and chest. Adding this to the wrist fragments yields a total weight for all observed fragments of 1.5 grains. Clearly then, Dr. Shaw was mistaken when he testified that "there seems to be more than three grains of metal missing...in the wrist" (4H113). The upshot of all this medical testimony with respect to weight loss is inconclusive. About 1.5 grains of metal were found in Governor Connally's wounds.

An unfired projectile like 399 might be expected to weigh about 161 grains (3H430). Subtracting the weight of CE 399 (158.6 grains) from this figure yields a possible weight loss of up to 2.5 grains. Hence, simply from the point of view of total weight, the various fragments in Connally's body could have come from CE 399. The critics have been wrong in contending that weight loss alone precludes CE 399 from being the bullet that wounded Governor Connally.

  7. Deadwood's a lot of fun, and I don't think McShane's all that bad. They are overdoing it on the swearing, of course, but I suspect that they're aware of that - his character's called Al Swearengen, presumably because his character keeps swearing again and again and again...

I picked up the lesbian vibe as well, and there were definitely two ladies kissing in the Sky ads. Hopefully Jane'll get a wash first though, because it's hard to letch over a woman who's covered in filth.

Afte The Shield and The Sopranos, it's sort of nice to have a series where the line between good and evil is so clearly drawn. Shades of grey are all well and good, but sometimes you just want to put your feet up and let the TV decide for you.

And what a cast! J. F. Sebastian from Blade Runner! Ferris Bueller's headmaster! The blind bloke from Prophecy 3! Lovejoy with guns!

All they need is Tinker as a bounty hunter and I'll be ecstatic.

Clicky for HBO's minisite about the real Deadwood. Be careful, though; here there be spoilers. Especially avoid the "deadcount" page which tallies up the corpses so far...

  8. One thing that did jar with me a tad, was the unexplained reasoning behind John's  kids' apparent hatred for him.  Either he was a really lousy father in the artificial timelines and/or Rosa has been coaching and encouraging the children's demonic natures.

That's exactly what she's been doing. "Kit" in the restaurant knew that Adam was going to kill Trish ("our wee boy's becoming a man") and it's pretty clear when she walks in on John and Adam that she's been teaching him how to use his powers ("it was much easier this time").
