  1. Hmm, do you have any "enforcement" type words that might work? I just remember a friend of mine, a marketing major, describing hardsell to the exchange students.

"Imagine you have a product, and you want to sell it. With the softsell you'd make them want it. Fluffy bunnies and babies and flowers and stuff. With the hardsell you'd make them afraid not to have it. Think the mafia showing up to your door and saying you WANT to pay them for protection, 'cause if you don't they're gonna break your knees."

  2. i want to see DC done the Vertigo treatment, not Superman popping over in Hellblazer to say hi to John, and ask him if he can reason with Zatanna, before she causes another Identity Crisis... ;)

I've got to agree with Rogan here. I voted no, mostly because I don't trust people to fuck with things I like. There are elements of DC that I would like to see done with a Vertigo flair, and I've got to admit that the idea of a GOOD Batman/Hellblazer crossover makes me drool, but overall I'd prefer if the two universes remained separate. I love superhero comics, but in general I prefer if they stay the hell away from my horror stories.

  3. I'm afraid I'd be up at the cashiers desk being a nuisance. It's always fun to go into places like that and start asking for stuff like "Wealth of Nations" or "Mein Kampf." This is most fun when harassing teenagers or young adults who don't really want to be working there but falls apart the second you're confronted by the sweet grandmotherly owner/manager :-(

  4. 'fraid I'm to blame for her presence Charlie. She's my suitemate, good friend. Made the mistake of telling her that Arogorn was 1 vote behind Eowyn... I should probably point out that she's been working on plans to stalk Vigo Mortisson for a couple of years now. :) On the plus side, she does read Hellblazer...

  5. actually, I bought the first couple of issues of Poison Elves that came out from Sirius a few years ago, and it was ok. it's was a pretty original take on the fantasy genre, with a killer elf assassin being the main character. more punk than goth, I thought. the only problem I had was with the art, which was a bit amateur in places. way too much crosshatching in places, which made it look extremely messy.  but the story was quite decent.

(not being an artist and therefore just going for "ooh shiny") I was always intrigued by the art, right up until you got to a fight scene. Then it tended to get even more confusing than Manga :( Here's a knee, here's sombody's foot, here's a lot of hair... Still, I love it :)

  6. And once I saw an old Bela Lugosi movie.  I don't remember its name, but it was well-written, acted and directed.  (In this movie he says, "To be truly dead must be marvelous" to a roomful of mortals who don't comprehend the remark.)  If I had to choose best vampire actor, it would be Lugosi.

“To die, to be truly dead. That must be glorious. There are far worst things awaiting man than death.” It's from the 1931 Dracula.

  7. "Nervouse as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs"

"Looks like they fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down."

Ooh, the american term "Hooker" for prostitute, actually named after a US civil war general. He was a drunk, and a partier, and his camps were known for their followers. He got away with all that shit because he was good. Then he got a big assignment, sobered up for it, and fell flat on his face...

"Hoover blanket" for a newspaper, referring to the depression when lots of people were homeless and literally using newspapers to keep warm. Hoover was president when the stock market crashed and nobody really forgave him for not actually DOING anything.

  8. Sounds "edgy" to me.

In my mind edgy has to try harder, although some of the basic elements are the same. However, I think this is turning into semantics. Suffice to say I'm not sure if you'd like it, but in my opinion it's a hell of a lot better than some of the shit Vertigo's been putting out recently :)

  9. Sticky, sticky, sticky.

    Poison Elves?

    Goth-tastic.

    Is it edgy?

    Hmm, edgy...

Well it started in 1991, the guy payed for the printing himself (and sold countless issues out of his home 'cause most stores didn't carry it) and it managed to stay alive and later thrive until he decided he was done with the series... Edgy (in the Vertigo way that you REALLY want to imply) isn't the first word that comes to mind. It's fucked up, dysfunctional, violent, angry, sarcastic, occasionally sadistic, and in my opinion funny as hell, but I'm not willing to call it edgy 8-)

    I REALLY wish I had a scanner...

  10. I just can't stand fairies and elves and unicorns and wicked witches and little boys who are magicians all of that in comic books anymore (or film or books for that matter)!

I just get really sick of Fantasy really quick.

Funny, that's part of the reason why I love Poison Elves, I always enjoyed Drew Hayes' rather cynical, dirty, pissed off view of the fairy tale world. I enjoyed watching Luse try to dismember the Purple Marauder at every turn...

As for being nice, refrain from flogging dead horses or throwing temper tantrums and we should be good :icon_confused: (I know, I know, that's supposed to be confused, but they don't have a good sarcastic smile...)

  11. I'm not allowed to watch Constantine with any of my friends. :icon_cry: One of them is a self-affirmed Keanufile and the rest have found themselves black and blue for saying things like "It might not be too bad," or "It looks promising"...

I'm just gonna have to sneak into the theater by myself, 'cause there's no way in hell I"m paying for that piece of shit!!!

  12. So I'm sick of getting blank looks, has anyone else ever read Poison Elves? It's a dark fantasy title by Drew Hayes (No, no relation whatsoever to Elf QUest unless you count Hayes making fun of Elf Quest in most of his introductions). It has very dark amazingly done artwork, although occasionally confuses the action.

Not the best storyline, but a good example of the art.

  13. hmm....It does sound familiar, in a twisted sense, Angie....

Anyway, I can't believe I frogert "Rosemary's Baby" either!!! Yep, that'll probably make my #1....I love Roman Polanski

And, thanks for reminding me, "Shadow of the Vampire", sethos.

I honestly think my brain is probably blending "The Princess and the Goblin" (George MacDonald) and "Goblins in the Castle" (Bruce Colville). At least one of these had a town called Nilbog, and both had plots against the adults...
