  1. So is there any way I can get my hands on Lynch's 6 hour cut?

Not to the best of my knowledge. I did hear a rumour that there is a Japanese edit version that is approx 4 hours long but I have yet to verify this as fact.

The TV Smithee version does contain some extended scenes and additional scenes (only reason to watch it in my opinion) that were cut from the The Lynch Interpretation so at least some of the extra footage survived.

One day I hope to see the complete footage but unfortunately I doubt it will ever happen. :icon_frown:

Right okay let's get some of the facts straight so we can continue the discussion.

The original film was made in 1984 by David Lynch (henceforth to be referred to as "The Lynch Interpretation"). This is the version that features McLachlan, Sting et al. Originally Lynch shot approximately 6 hours of footage that had to be edited down to about 2 hours 20 in the final cut.

Later when it was time to show the film on American TV it was decided (rightly or wrongly) that the American public would probably not understand the film as was so a heavily recut version was made, which included a whole new introduction by some bloke instead of the Princess Irulan introduction. It also had additional scenes that had been cut from "The Lynch Interpretation" due to pressure from the studio over film length. This version so annoyed Lynch that he asked for his name to be removed from it and so it became an Alan Smithee film (henceforth to be known as "The TV Smithee version")

Many years later (2000) a completely new version of Dune was created for the SciFi Channel. This is a 3-part mini series (approx 4 and 1/2 hours) which also spawned a version of Children of Dune as well (henceforth to be known as "The SciFi Channel version")

No we have a few facts to avoid confusion you may continue arguing.

Kwizatz Haderach, give a dog a bone...

Patrick Stewart as Duncan Idaho was just bad casting, IMO.

Patrick Stewart played Gurney Halleck and Richard Jordan played Duncan Idaho.

  3. Well, he was one of the few good things about that film.  I wouldn't have thought of him for the role of Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, but he was really good in it.  Probably his was the most audacious and best casting in the film, which unfortunately didn't have much good casting at all.

    I'm sorry?

Are you suggesting that from a cast of (among others)

Kyle McLachlan, Jurgen Prochnow, Francesca Annis, Jose Ferrer, Brad Dourif, Patrick Stewart, Dean Stockwell, Max Von Sydow & Virginia Madsen (I won't mention Sean Young - oops :) )

    that Sting was the best???

    Some mistake surely.

  4. So it's not torture. Repeat, not torture....

  5. Hey, Pooks, is unknown your friend that you keep urging to come to the forum?

No. You have to wait for The Beast. I'm actually hoping he'll join soon, he's on about getting the net at home.

Did I hear my name mentioned? Waiting is such sweet sorrow.

You really should be careful what you hope for as sometimes it comes true.
