  1. And a [over-used word].

Why? Because he speaks his mind, is true to his word and doesn't take crap from the movie elite or the reporters who twist every quote into a cut? There was a time an actor like that would be embraced by those sick of the BS spewing from Hollywood. He is certainly not on the inside and doesn;t give a shit about being there. Or what anyone thinks of him. Sounds like a comic book hero to me...

  2. I guess I'm just getting paranoid in my old age.

There is only one me and that's me. But I do see Johny C's point. Doing a film exactly like the Hellblazer comic would not mean it would have been any more successful and maybe even less.

On a side note that has some relevance - has anyone seen the newest trailer for Sin city? In Black and white? I don;t know... this to me seems like it could be great or a massive failure because of Rodrequez's insistance on being so faithful to the comic. Just too much reliance on its feel of being a comic book, like Dick Tracy or Tales of the Crypt or even Streets of Fire. Completely stylized with no resemblance to reality. It could easily turn off the majority of the audience. This to me is what Francis meant when he said he didn't want Constantine to be a "comic book" movie. You can say what you want about the finished film but at least it tried to be a real movie in a real world. Imagine if every scene started with ugh.. a comic book panel.. what next - balloons over their heads?

  3. Oh wow, haven't posted in a while, but who should've played Constantine? Well, I would pick someone who isn't pretty. But can pull off a sexy I want to smoke and screw you later look. Russel Crowe can pull that off, but he's too old. I would agree with the most of you on Jude.

Russel is younger than comic JC. I think he's not even 40 yet.

  4. I love the fact that you think that just because someone is writing it that it means its been greenlit, i'm so sure there are scripts out there for Istar 2 and Gigli 2 and Starsky and Hutch 2*, so when are they coming out in cinemas Tears?

*Shaft 2 (the SLJ remake), Battlefield Earth 2, You Got Served 2, Going Overboard 2, Kazaam 2, Swept Away 2, SpiceWorld 2, Mr Nanny 2 (oh yes please God),  Barb Wire 2, Mac and Me 2, Captain America 2, DareDevil 2 and No Holds Barred 2.

(did you notice two fine Hulk Hogan movies in that list)

Why don't you try reading a post before you attack it --

    >>>>>Of course all of this is subject to the BO. To commision a script is one thing, to shoot a 90 mill filmn of it is another entirely. >>>>

Yeah, I wrote that - about four hours ago.

    Jesus, same ol' same ol'.

  5. London has been discussed seriously and there is even an idea that Keanu's conjob is actually from Liverpool, as in the book.

What's your source? I definitely wouldn't mind seeing a sequel even if the film is terrible because terrible comic-to-film movies haven't really hurt a readership before I don't think. Ah well, I'm going to try and find out some more info about a Constantine sequel at SDCC05. I still wish they'd done Chas some justice.

I know the poor but recently enlightened sucker writing it...

As for humor.. you;re right, there was more then I commented on - just didn't feel like the same JC from old. Maybe it was how he was drawn, always hunched over, lighting a cig. Looking ominiously ravaged...

  6. Just read it. Loved it. Was wondering, though. It seems the tone of John has actually been made even more monotoned and serious then p[revious incarnations - more like the feel of John in the film. Am I wrong about that? He doesn't have much sense of wry wit at all, minus the one line of the tampons in the glove box.

This was written after the film started production so I wonder if Mike Carey had inside knowledge...

As a film it could have been pretty good, if done on a smaller than 100 mill budget - so those xpecting high action would not have shown up. Plenty of scares and chills there, though.

The sequel story is still being developed and at this point anything is possible. The first film cannot be discounted so it has to be addressed in any possible next chapter. I hated losing Chas - not the movie version - but the real version because without him John has no ally at all. Midnight might have to step up into that role or even poissibly the human Gabriel, which could be interesting, seeing how he/she is slightly insane at the end and knows it is her that now has to find her way back into God's good graces.. And then there's Isabel, released from Hell by Satan himself - meaning she's a tainted angel in heaven. That could also be a very interesting addition. London has been discussed seriously and there is even an idea that Keanu's conjob is actually from Liverpool, as in the book.

Of course all of this is subject to the BO. To commision a script is one thing, to shoot a 90 mill filmn of it is another entirely.

  7. JUDE LAW should have played John Constantine - if they'd made it based on the Hellblazer character.

If you don't like this director, I'd suggest Barry Sonenfeld or Terry Gilliam. Or Alex Proyas. As I said elsewhere.

Sorry, John IMO Jude Law, the "sexiest man in the world", is completely wrong. Plus he's in every movie made already.

  8. Two of the top guys writing and directing these days - Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor - writer/director of great films (all adapted) CITIZEN RUTH, ELECTION, ABOUT SCHMIDT and their oscar nomed best picture SIDEWAYS did an interview in the WGA's WRITTEN BY and actually said this when talking about adaptations.

Q- Talk a little about adaptations in general.

JIM TAYLOR: ABOUT SCHMIDT was a book that I didn't respond to as much as Alexander did but I loved the script that he had written while we were living together. It was something like "Oh, this can't go to waste." In some adaptations, the book and the short story can really fight you. We have been lucky with ELECTION and SIDEWAYS in particular. We could really stand on the shoulders of what was there.

ALEXANDER PAYNE: The key is that a book gives you an idea for an original. So we take utter liberties to make it our own. I don't care about serving an author's vision: I care about serving our vision. I can't just bring something over to film, and especially something like literature, when in fact the opposite is true. The better a book is, and the more successful on strictly literary terms, the more impossible to translate or carry over.

Q - Have you been lucky in having cooperative authors?

JIM TAYLOR: We just make sure it doesn't say in their contract that they have say over anything we do. If they do, we look for the nearest hill we can run to....

Kind of arrogant but hey - they're batting 1000 so who can argue?

  9. Ouch!

I'm no expert on these matters but isn't 30-35% considered to be an average drop-off from weekend 1 to weekend 2 ?

Not for a horror/supernatural or sci-fi. They are expected to fall AT LEAST 50% in the 2nd weekend. That's why they have to open huge. And Constantine is an R. It's behaving as pundits predicted.

My guess is why they're announcing a sequel is because of its overseas box office receipts, and the fact they know they will make it back already. Don't forget DVD. And they didn't pay Keanu 15% of the gross box office receipts like the Matrix movies, so there'll be more in for Warner's coffers.

A movie like Hitch is supposed to have soft falls, as with the genre.

The beta test for any movie star is the opening weekend. That's why Will Smith (Hitch at 43 million) and Keanu (Constantine at 33 million - rated R) are paid the salaries they are paid.....to 'open' a movie. How the movie behaves thereafter depends on the quality of the movie, the word of mouth etc....etc...

Hitch got marvelous word of mouth, as did Meet the Fockers, Aviator, the first Matrix etc.

I think Constantine is heading towards domestic 60 - 70 million, just as I predicted from the beginning. But its overseas box office tally will be double that, so it might make over 200 million worldwide. Overseas, this kind of movie tends play better.

It fell because of the word of mouth, which is really bad. Regardless if it makes more money over seas, I personally don’t think it will make two hundred million dollars world wide because it dropped across the board on it’s second weekend as well.

The only reason the studio said sequel was the fact that they wanted to hype the movie some more and to also hide their disappointment with it as well.

    Don’t expect a Constantine 2.

Well there goes that free trip to London...

  10. Tears, in the interests of full disclouse you should tell folks who you are - if you don't, and you keep posting, I will.

Kris, you're wasting your breath mate.

That would cause me irreputable harm, John. Seriously. So I will bow out.

The posts I have made since I arrived here in October (officially Nov.) have never been to attack. I'll defend myself for sure. But I've always just tried to inform those here how things can get twisted in any adaptation and how frustrating it can be to make both sides see each other. I admit I have my bad days like everyone else, although I don't make a character trait out of it like a few here who wear their bitterness as a moniker. I'm generally an optomistic guy (not a girl) and I do find humor in a lot of dark places. That some don't 'get it' is more of the nature of reading words and not talking face to face. I have learned a lot from this site. I wish it existed 5 years ago, or if it did, I wish I had found it. I know the comic will continue beyond this movie no matter how successful it might be - or might not be. I hope some of you see the film and try to enjoy it for what it is or at least tolerate it enough not to burn down the theaters afterwards. It's a good film, IMHO, but that means shit here, I know. I do know if there is a sequel a lot of what has been said here will be taken into account. Trust me on that.

There will be a lot of new faces coming here in the next month, some will be a hell of lot worse then me, so you all have your work cut out for you. For better or worse this movie will push Hellblazer into the mainstream. What happens after depends alot on the attitude you and the others here present to them. And when you find yourself actually listening and being open minded enough not to chase all of them away, you'll understand a little more on why some endevours grow and others stay small. It''ll be the best lesson in studio polictics you could ever learn.

I wish you all well. Take care.

  11. ANd your point is..........Those in Asia have NO taste in what is considered a good film and a good singer.  Pleaz.  These individuals can think for themselves Kris.  Don't dismiss their thoughts as insignificant becuz it doesn't agree with yours you pompous A-hole.  This should be in the bitter thread.

    No, thats not my point.

My point is that its not a universal across-the-board opinion, the way Tears was talking was as if thats the final result, its a great movie cos a bunch of Koreans said it was great and therefore thats us all proven wrong.

Thanks for the "pompous A-hole" bit too, you and Tears exchanging notes about me now?

Its one thing trying to throw sticks and stones mate but in your's and your boyfriend Tears' case - try throwing something larger than twigs and chuckies.

You claim you're a journalist, no you brag you're a journalist, and yet you can't seem to read or interpret the words in front of you. No where in that post did I say "that's the final result" but when you get on and claim every positive opinion is a plant you're a discredit to your position as an intelligent non biased human being. I have seen the negative reviews, Kris, and now we have positive ones - ones that are coming from legit sources. And all are posted here. In fact it's ironic that one that John posted here from a British news magazine has exactly ZERO replies in the thread. It's like it doesn;t exist. Have you even read it? Or the Hollywood reporter review? Or the less then stellar Variety one? I didn;'t write them and you certainly didn't. So stop your attacks and please stop your racist profiling with lines like "a bunch of Koreans." I find that offensive and beneath even you.

  12. And you sound like a depressed soul that needs a good exorcism.  I've got a four foot mirrir that might do the trick.

The fact is I don't take IMBD that seriously, Kris.   It's you that is apparently putting me on a pedastal since this seems to actually be getting you worked up.  You are as guilty as anyone with your posts on that site.  You constantly belittle others on there with your imagined and projected superiority and seem to enjoy pushing the buttons of those that attack back.  Please don;t tell me you don;t enjoy it or I will lose complete respect for you.   Your journalistic endevours deserve much better.

The difference between you and I is that I have always been honest with my regular forays on this board and on IMDB, your masquerades on these boards and on IMDB have obviously embarrassed you more than you care to admit and you're now desperately trying to claw back any credibility you thought you had by passing the buck onto others. Shameful.

Besides, i didn't need to belittle you, you already dug your own grave on both messageboards.

    Nighty night.

Well I stand corrected, Kris, you are the same no matter where you post. Arrogant and pompus to the end. The only one desperate here is you as you try and get yourself accepted into the fold. But you're a newbie here, Kris, so show some respect for your elders.

  13. Hi, This is Seoul, Korea;

Saw it yesterday... yet no intend to spread any spoliers so do not worry.

Well in Korea nobodys aware of the original comics - some still don't know it's existence;;- and me too, I just heard of it when I was surfing around at the Internet just some hours before I saw the movie.. so I cannot compare with the originals.

Anyhow, I'll give a 8.0~8.5 out of 10, it's just about the same as my previous expectations.

Good CG, good ideas popping up every minute,(which I give the most points to.)

Unsatisfying action, no overwhelming theory or philosphy concerned,

    and most important... great sense of humor; I loved the gag;

To sum up, it's worth a try^^ You guys will love it what Keanu does the xxx to the xxx;;(No spoilers^^)

    Anyone? :)

  14. You were never 'had'.  I am not a shill for anyone.  I have been myself when I come here and have voiced opinions that have gotten me slapped on the wrist as of late by both sides.  I, like many who surf this glorius cess pool of hidden gems, sometimes play the boards and IMDB is so rampant with easy targets that it is a great procrastination tool.  And a good place to vent - on any emotional level you desire.  If anyone actually thinks intelligent discussion goes over there then you're more naive then I thought. I know for a fact that some here go there just to ruffle feathers.  It's easy and cheap entertainment.  now call me sick and bring out the PC police.

You played a dog and pony act with everyone on here and on IMDB, your opinions gain no credence or garner any credibility anymore, you've shown yourself up as a hypocrite and a liar.

What are you trying to prove with that statement above now?, that we have no sense of humour or sense of fun?, that we missed the point? that messageboards such as these are a source of catharsis from which we vent and expel our frustrations?

You put yourself on a pedestal by alluding to being involved with the film, you got people hanging on your spurious words for information on the film and instead you've just succeeded in taking the piss out of them instead.

Well i hope you enjoyed this form of "easy and cheap entertainment" - and the same goes for your beloved Keanu movie Constantine.

And yes, you're right, you don't seem to sound like a shill either. You just sound like some kid who played a prank that backfired on yourself.

And you sound like a depressed soul that needs a good exorcism. I've got a four foot mirrir that might do the trick.

The fact is I don't take IMBD that seriously, Kris. It's you that is apparently putting me on a pedastal since this seems to actually be getting you worked up. 15. Indeed. It's no secret that a few of 'our' lot have posted over on the IMDB boards, but the disparity between 'personas' ain't so wide, in the cases I'm aware of, anyway. James' posts are usually as reasonable, coherent and intelligent over there as they are here, for example (allowing for the differing natures of the two boards), while Kris acknowledged within about a day of registering here that he was krisrennie from the IMDB boards, and hasn't exactly been shy about bringing his frustrations to both boards.

Oh my god, Kris is KRIS??? He's the most fun over there. Bashing each other silly over the stupidiest things. I have great fun seeing how pissed he can get at me and vise versa. But believe me, I'm smiling the whole time I have a feelings he is too. I don't put on here since I do find this board to have a lot more to offer as far as intellectually stimulating conversation and I may hang around even after the 18th. That's if John doesn't boot me permanently. It's been eye opening to say the least.

  16. I'm bitter about the whole TearsInRain/Fireflies-charade. Call me naïve, but while I didn't always agree with TIR, I at least felt he had an interest in actual discussion, and was open to differing points of view. Now I just feel "had".

If this is some strange marketing ploy from Warners, I have to say it's working VERY BADLY.

You were never 'had'. I am not a shill for anyone. I have been myself when I come here and have voiced opinions that have gotten me slapped on the wrist as of late by both sides. 17. Wow, how ironic, this is the only place John has not blocked me from posting. I keep waiting to see if Tom has a cross on my yard and pockets full of matches And we were making such progress... For the record I am not a shill for anyone and always wrote the truth in my posts. But it's so much easier to find hate in the world, kind of like purging that alternate ego ... Yeah, I know how that is.

Have fun watching the film, Tom. Your life obviously revolves around it. Mine doesn't.
