  1. That's quite a post, Tears, and I have to say that I'm gutted that they took out the cons and the initial plea to Hell.

AS AM I.  I brought up the Ellie scene way back when and even hoped that they would put it back becuz of those reasons.

As you rightly point out, without scenes like that, it's a very different film and a very different story. Everything sadly points towards Constantine's need for redemption in the eyes of god, not rescue from the fires of Hell, and that's why it's such a bad adaptation. Sounds like the producers treaded shit all over your good intentions as they trooped off down to the hell of mediocrity. Never mind. Good luck with your next film.

The sequel will be in better care.

I'd also like to publicly apologise for any sweary stuff or nastiness I've ever pointed in your direction, since you do seem to be a jolly intelligent and fair person. Heated arguments raising my ire and all that. Never mind. I'll buy you a pint if the WB agents ever give you back.

"Matadoor, however, can fuck right off. The [over-used word]."

James- Fuck'n Relax- I straight up asked tears for a reason James/JOhn/Ade/Tom/Red.  I didn't have to go there with him and I did out of curiosity since he was involved from the getgo as was my understanding.  We are all in agreement.  I actually prefer the comic version for the same reasons Tears posted in terms of waging decisons for religious reasons ESPECIALLY with what is happening in our times.  I DO NOT DISAGREE.  Let me write this again.  I DO NOT DISAGREE.  I do not have all of the pieces and I came to a point that I wanted to hear MORE of the pieces from TEARS.

Matadoor - you haven't read a single issue of Hellblazer and aren't qualified to make any comments on the relationship between it and the movie Constantine.

John your wrong. I have and he is a lot more of an interesting, complex character. That is why I nudged Tears. I KNOW who Tears is and I wanted to hear his/her take.

I would like to Know and you can PM me Tears- Why YOU did not bring this up to Keanu/Francis Akiva, the writers, et. al. Did you point this out? If so when????????????????????????????

I do know that there was a major gamble with a new director and the topic of redemption and where we are in these times...........financial risks are measured. I do not disagree with members on this board. I still think its a good film as Tears states in its own right. Some scenes will be included in the DVD. I think what is painful to all of us,- yes ALL OF US- is that they were close to gettng it exactly right as the comic- Measured risk prevailed unfortunately but it is still a movie worth seeing. Will you agree with that statement Tears?

Yes. It is very much so. I PM'd you on the other.

  2. Tears- you keep stating this:

"It's not the comic, and I'm sorry for that, but it;'s a good movie in its own right"

You are apologizing for what aspects specifically. The only apologies that I can see is that Constantine thumbing his nose to Heaven is not as equally represented to the degree that it is to hell. Would you say this movie is not about leverage for John knowing he does not have faith? Would you say John as a conman is NOT represented in this film? Did you not reaffirm that was the intent of the writers? We know this movie is about redemption. Where is it the freeway and where is it the off ramp. And again, where was it claimed to be an exact adpatation of the comic? All I ever read was that liberties were taken as they were for Blade, Blade Runner, etc.

I am only stating what has been deemed PC here on this site and I have to admit, I agree with the statement. I am sorry that it's not what the fans here wanted but it's still a good movie. I was deeply involved in this production, you know that, but I can still be somewhat objective about the outcome.

By cutting all references to John's acceptance and initial pleas to Hell (through Ellie) we saw a man trying to play both sides to get to his own end. Now with NO Ellie scenes he goes straight to God and it skews to the Christian right. In the earlier drafts John was shown to be a conman in the Midnight scenes (conning even Midnight) and we understood (before he found out he had cancer) why Gabriel would deny him passage because of all the shit he had pulled. By changing the gist of that scene during production it eliminated the notion that John had a checkered past. Now we come in and he's saving kids, helping out, not conning anyone... and we wonder... what did he do so bad? Oh yeah, took his own life. It's all that's left and makes the film about religion, about his redemption to save his soul and no - that was not the intent of the writers on this film.

The con was in from the beginning but it's been buried so far now that even the actors in interviews don;t know the true intent of the plot. They play to the press, talking about faith and religion and John's seeking of redemption and forget where the hell this character originated from. It's sanding the edges off a character and story and I do have a major problem with any studio doing that. But this is a time when the world is on constant alert and I can understand why everyone would be aligning themselves to the "light" so they're not a target but - dammit, they again forget the potential of a character who walks both sides to speak to the world and say - "wake the fuck up, you;re killing yourselves over theological bullshit!" I don't give a fuck if he's english or american and a fucking alien from the little dipper, it's that VOICE of his that could have said something of value that I fear has been lost.

And to top it off they now add a legend at the beginning that essenitially destroys the entire mysterty of "what's coming." There were plenty of visual ways in previous drafts that explained that very thing but near the MIDDLE of the story. Who cans their mystery in the first minute??

I saw the film completed 5 months ago in Lakewood at the first test screening, before the reshoots and I have to admit the later versions are not as good - IMO - They seemed dumbed down because someone in the test audience wasn't the brightest bulb in the room. And no one could nail a better ending? There were 10 better ones in previous drafts.

Don't get me wrong, I love the look of the film and the tone and the mood and several key scenes play very well but the studio system sometimes cuts off its balls despite its face and it bugs the shit out of me. Sometimes the things that seem the simplest things to fix to me are made even worse. I guess I need to just shut the fuck up and get behind the camera soon so I can botch up my own stuff.

Yeah, it's been that kind of day...

"I know it's not the comic, and Im sorry for that, but it's a good film in its own right."

  3. And Matadoor succeeds in derailing yet another thread with his wanton bullshit. He truely is the master of disinformation and spin.

Danakel, have you read the comic at all since you found out about the movie?

I suspect that if you did you might understand, if not agree with ho the fans of the comic might feel.

I do find it odd that you're so supportive of a film you've never seen, of a character you're not familiar with and a cast you're not a fan of.

    whoa your a cheerful one.

First of all i do not support a movie a haven't seen. I am merely excited about it. So excited that it motivated me into looking more into the subject matter of the movie. I find that the comic is very intellectual but i don't have enough knowlege to truely understand why people are so angry. Its possible that I just don't know why yet. However when I am this amped about a movie i want to share my excitement with others. In this case I want to know why the hardcore fans, those who should be more hyped then me, are disowning a movie they have not yet seen themselves.

To be fair there is probably a very ligitimate reason why not to like the movie. However I don't see why you can't just put away minor differences between comic and movie to just try and enjoy a possibly good movie.

i will definitly be reading the comic regardless of whether its a good or bad movie. Because i know it exists now.

Why don;t you do your homework here and read through some of the old threads and your answer why will present itself fully. But to come to a site devoted to the comic and expect everyone to suddenly "understand" your enthusiasm for a film that has taken many liberties is a little niave. These are people who have read the character for years and have a natural reason to be concerned with a film that does little to honor most of of the major points of the character. It's great that your excitement has led you to the source but just remember, screaming "Nazi's rule" in a jewish trailer park is not a very wise idea.

"It's not the comic, and I'm sorry for that, but it;'s a good movie in its own right"

  4. Hmmmm...maybe Tears can confirm this but the post-credits bit sounds like it could be the Angel scene we all took the mickey out of from the adaptation.

They've gone back to the ending from the script we saw, which is shit but nowhere near as bad as the one in the comic.

wink wink.. hint hint.. but without a major character....

  5. Keanustantine is the Demon Constantine, isn't he?  When the kid tried to kill himself, Demon Constantine possessed him, changed his memories, and he grew up thinking he was John Constantine.  After all, he's all the smeggy bits that John Constantine didn't really want in his soul.

Close. He is the DNA twin of Constantine, produced in a bio lab and seperated at birth from his brother. The sequel will be ConstanTEEN going back to London and Liverpool to find his roots and discovering his twin is this rough and tumble British bastard with a lighter coat and lighter hair. They meet at an exorcism of a horse and argue over how to expunge the field demon from its bowels. ConstantINE wants to use Ellie as a mare and trick the demon by fucking it out but ConstantEEN wants to suck the demon out with a holy cow milking machine. They argue, fight and TEEN beats the shit out of TINE until the TINE Chaz steps in wipes TEEN's face in horse dung. They break out laughing and bond over beer and cigs at a local pub where Ellie brings a band of hot demon chicks and the two brothers go upstairs and fuck their brains out and discuss the memories of their parents. It's a story of connections and identity and will warm the hearts of all fans everywhere. It's tentatively called TEEN and TINE.

  6. So this is the local pub, huh? Like the decor although it's a little large for my tastes. As for adaptations, I'm waiting for the big screen version of My Mother the Car and Coronet Blue. That was the series in my youth that caused was cancelled before the big mystery was ever revealed. I never trusted TV again.

  7. Seems like the response was 90 percent favorable. This is only what I heard, mind you. Everyone was there, all the stars, director, writers. They had two press screenings, thursday and friday. These are not critics but journalists who will be writing about the movie, its themes, etc. There were a few confused people, the Asian market actually wondered out John's bisexuality? Huh?? (it may have stemmed from the androgenous nature of the demons and angels) And this will rankle some nerves here but the ones who seemed to like the movie the most were the Christian journalist group. There were some that said "If John wanted redemption why didn;t he just ask for it." The answer I heard was because he wouldn't beg anyone, especially God. That made some eyebrows rise. There are some new changes to the film, notably that 'questionable ending" is kind of gone. Just say don't leave until the credits are over... There is also a kind of legend added at the opening that is there because of questions the dumber of the audience members asked. Ekkk...

The film opens on Feb 8th in Hong Kong and Maylasia and that's when all the trade publication reviews will come out.

All in all a pretty good response and Warners seems happy that the film will be treated seriously in the next few weeks. But of course this is all conjecture and I don't believe any of the 300 or so journalists have read the source material.

  8. I know that's intended as funny and I did laugh but it made me think about how lazy we've become as a society.  We now discount or approve of any art (not that all movies are) by quick witted catch phrases or a part of our anatomy raised or lowered.  As if there is nothing in between.

    (...)

It's Rome all over again but we're not feeding them to lions, we're chewing them up the public eye.

It's laziness and total disrespect and it's meant to give a 'coolness' factor to the reviewer who "just didn't have the time to expend any more words to this POS."

How close are you to the people who made the movie Tears? :excl:

Too close. I have to whisper or I'll get sacked.

  9. Wait a sec, are you saying that I can pay 100 us dollars at this site and it translates into 100 pounds?  That can't be right, can it?   That would be awesome.

No, you just name your price when you click on the link.

You know how the exchange rate works ?

You want to pay $10 it's equivalent to £20.

Isn;'t that reverse? Wouldn't 200 usd be about 100 pounds? Or am I missing something?

  10. This was name that was thrown out a while ago. He IS the American version of Constantine but for the most part he is not really liked in the movie going community. They pretty much see him as a pessimistic ahole. It's almost too right-on casting. But it would have been interesting.

  11. Oh dear: misogyny, homophobia AND violence.

    How very american of you.

That's an interesting wrinkle, putting down a prejudiced remark with one that's just as prejudiced.

Qusoor is onto something: the southern California movie industry is grotesquely hypocritical: while it's loaded with gay people it's always been happy to exploit audience homophobia until American gay activists made it too unpleasant to do so very often. Tears' remark about wanting to "bitchslap" a gay man is I'm sure typical of industry attitudes. 8-)

I didn;t want to bitchslap him because he was gay. I wanted to bitch slap him because his upturned snob assed face pissed me off. I am actually a very fine decorator myself with lots of ideas on color and arrangement... And Fendi's are much nicer than LV's anyday...

  12. I think there have been plenty of words hurled at this travesty, many of of them thoughtful and well reasoned, I for one have spent (wasted) a large chuck of the last three years vilifying this film. So don't play "Mr Superior Artiste" with me, Bucko!

People put a lot of effort into this? Well, I'm sorry but that still doesn't mean it's worth a damn. I'm in a band and if someone thinks that the songs I've written are crap, so be it. They are entitled to thier opinion and should voice that opinion however they see fit.

I'm not sorry if someone who put a lot of time and effort is hurt by criticism of this film, after all, I'm sure they were suitably recompensed for it by Warners.

Well Tom, I wasn't even talking about this film. That shoulder of yours must be getting strong as hell with the size of the chip you carry around it. But I know this is just your online personna. You;re really a sweet guy with a loft full of furry animals and sparkling sunshine.
