I can't wait for Duncan Jones' 'MOON'. Knowing I wanted to see it, I even avoided the apparently too-revealing trailer as I know I'm going to see it anyway (I did the same with 'The Fountain')

Knowing that 'MOON' has already landed in the USA, has anyone seen it yet?

  2. I have survived many days on my own while Lady Venkman has been prepping a show in London. She's heading back today now *I* am heading down to London overnight for a course

However, my minor celebration is that we cross paths for about an hour this afternoon

Probably too late for this suggestion, but why didn't Lady V stay on in London and you could both spend the night in civilisation, with her getting an early train back up tomorrow morning?

Ha. Because she had to be back in Sheffield for a meeting this morning but mostly because she'd already booked the tickets. But we're now both back home and so this rather pointless and uninteresting tale comes to an end. Thank you for your time/not punching me to the ground. :hattip:

    Sickening, isn't it!

  4. Anyone who's miffed about Lono probably not being dead is right - but what kind of death, without devouting the entire issue to it, would have been spectacular enough to satisfy what Lono had coming to him.

Someone mentioned Barracuda's death but those comics are very black and white in people getting what they deserve. Surely 100 Bullets is different and one of the main factors was that things aren't fair and characters didn't always get what they deserved - good or bad.

I think there are plenty of things to dislike about the finale - the main one being for me that the Dizzy Graves central spine of the series was actually the least interesting part of 100 Bullets in my case. But I think the ancillary characters all got the good endings.

  5. Buying books by the cartload seems sort of...weird.

So it's weird in England but not in America? :sherlock:

Them's the rules. And for lots of other things too. England was more like a prototype. We do everything the Americans do but an early glitch in the programming means we apologise profusely immediately afterwards and then get pissed up before writing letters of complaint to the BBC.

    Sorry.

At a loose end, I went to see Terminator: Salvation. Oof. What a jumble. You could almost see the script notes on screen - and, as opposed to some other blockbusters, I actually agreed with the added or improved scenes but it only added to the confusion.

I'm not entirely sure why we were supposed to like the Sam Worthington character from the beginning and the actual point of the film became muddled as Jonathan Nolan's re-write that bumped up Christian Bale's role from the '...and Christian Bale' role it was originally intended as. It felt like there were several scenes missing too. Young Kyle Reese and Sam Worthington's Marcus seem suddenly chummy even though Marcus never actually introduces himself. There also seems to be (mild spoiler)

little question by those who meet Marcus as to how he has somehow missed Judgement Day and doesn't know what's been going on in the 15 years since he 'died' in 2003

They had a crack at it as well but I felt they really bungled the John Connor folk hero/false prophet thing. It wasn't clear why anyone really listened to him at all. Listening to Christian Bale gravelling over the radio at night is hardly Moses-like!

The ending just kind of made the whole thing seem thoroughly fruitless. We were just where we were at the beginning. I haven't seen the second season of Sarah Connor Chronicles yet but the first series was way ahead in terms of scope (and actually being enjoyable) than this. Some very interesting ideas here but, to be honest, this didn't feel like a film with a proper story.

    C+

They're definitely ending at the end of this forthcoming series. They've had the specific number of episodes in concrete since mid-season 3 (althougth they have just reneged on that by adding a whole extra episode for the finale. Outrageous  )

Wow. That sounds amazing. Is there any way you could securely take a camera on your bike without inadvertantly catapaulting it into the woods when you go over some bumps? The closest I got to your encounter was recently walking around in the early hours in London with a friend who needed counselling and we saw about twenty foxes in 30 minutes.

I'm glad you're still getting your rides in without having to go out in the day time! Is it humid where you are or just hot hot hot?

Finally got my hands on Unthinkable #1 (let it be known that Forbidden Planet in Sheffield is the worst comic shop in the world)

Pretty much agree with this review. A lot of fun, and really nice art and writing. My only slight grumble with this issue is that (being a first issue) all it does is establish the premise that I already knew and drew me to pick up a new comic to begin with. However, beyond the plot is some really nice characterisation (in particular, the oddballs who make up the worst-case scenario thinktank!), some good intriguing clues and just the simple fact that the style and writing of this first issue makes me feel that that pay-off will be just as entertaining as the set-up.

Well worth a look. (oooh, look at me venturing outside of my usual pull-list  )

  10. It's like anticipating a new Hellblazer creative team - only this time we don't even have to trot out the 'Demon Blood' for why the main character looks so young

    Is Doctor Who bi?

    Wait...is Constantine?

I always love 'eavesdropping' when you guys get into it in this thread

    My two cents:

For me , 'Blink' gets extra points for being the main-characters-aren't-in-it episode of the series. Especially when re-watching 'Love & Monsters' recently! And in the Eccleston vs Tennant debate - don't forget the importance that kids were soon able to associate David Tennant with Christmas!

In terms of Moffat - its impossible to say really. I assume Moffat wouldn't cast someone he didn't want for the part/role he had in mind. The fact that he's casting relative unknowns so far suggests he's casting who he wants (i'm sure the supporting cast will fill up with names soon though). Mostly though, I just want it to not be RTD's run on the show. Not because it was bad - just simply because RTD already did it!!

  12. "well, it's never going to happen, is it!". How do you argue with that

Oh he is going to feel so silly when a xenomorph bursts out of his chest. And we will all be like "told you so".

Legen...waitforit...dary!!!  If only you were in charge of that sort of thing!

  13. My best buddy Tom who painted this for me in a matter of hours for the cover of a series pitch I'm working on (when the pitch is rejected but they say they like the artwork, I will move this post to the 'I dislike greatly' thread  )

I loved The Fountain. I don't think this is *the* answer, but I interpreted that the Conquistador was Izzy's way of coping, romanticising her fellah's heroic but futile quest to save her - and that the 'bald Jackman' was to represent Thomas way of coping which was to cling obsessively to the thought of saving Izzy/the tree to the extent of excluding everything else in the universe, including the little time Izzy has left.

Of course, all three stories actually happened in 'reality' too to show that there will always be grief and loss and we will always struggle to cope and let go. Or something.

    Love this film.

Oh dear. I hate to be the voice of contention but I didn't think too much of Coraline

I liked it just fine but felt a lot of the five star reviews I've read where a bit much. I thought it looked amazing and I couldn't believe some parts were still stop-motion! But I felt the film was quite slow and I didn't really *feel* a lot of it. I honestly think a lot of that can be placed on the soundtrack which didn't really administer pace and I felt at several points really brought it to a halt.

Without Gaiman's authorial voice a lot of the stuff just felt odd for odd's sake - although I absolutely loved Mr Bobinsky (Ian McShane) and his jumping mouse circus.

I expect, overall, I just got a bit overhyped for the film and was expecting the moon on a stick. 3/5
