  1. Men can always take out the best from a bad situation, eh?

Felicitaciones, Con Artist! What's Atkins diet?

Thanks Spain! Atkins diet is the one where you can't eat carbs, just protein and saturated fat. May sound as an easy thing to do but here in Ecuador rice and potato are present in almost every meal, so, it's a difficult regime to follow and the fact that my cholesterol has skyrocketed doesn't help either BUT that's the price to pay to lose a few pounds.

  2. The Orphanage: After watching The Mist and Cloverfield didn't think I'd come around a good horror movie any time soon, I'm so glad to have been proven wrong. The film's creepy atmosphere grabs you from the beginning and doesn't let go, setting you up for the big fright scenes. Clever, scary and moving, a gem. A+
  3. Watched some pretty good movies this weekend...

Shoot Em Up: Had one hell of a time watching this one. Not the most intelligent of films, granted, but what it lacks in brains it compensates in non-stop way-over the top action. A

Juno: Sharp dialogue, clever jokes and lovely Ellen Page. Can't go wrong with this one. A+

Cloverfield: All I thought it was going to be and then some more, loved it. A+

27 Dresses: A highly entertaining film that, although predictable at times, shows romantic comedies can still be fun to watch and worth your time. A

  4. I thought In the Mouth of Madness was pretty entertaining, truly creepy at times. Prince of Darkness was great, had nightmares about the video transmission of the future for weeks. Love The Thing and Escape from New York, as for his other features, I usually find Carpenter's films fun to watch, even the bad ones.

  5. The Mist, since the first timeI watched The Exorsist I hadn't enjoyed a horror movie as much as I did this one. Truly gripping, beautifully lensed, a masterpiece. A+

I still think the ending is too mean spirited. if they'd left off the final reveal it would have been truly awesome.

Agree with you, mean spirited indeed. My mom and sister watched it last night and though they loved the film they felt the same way about the ending. A thing I learned from it? in case of an interdimensional war, we can count on the U.S. army to save our asses.

  6. I thought Californication was quite decent though it's not half as edgy as it thinks it is. that said, I loved the scene of Hank getting very high indeed, screwing a woman in the bed of his ex-wife and her fiancee and then both of them puking all over said bed and the fiancee's favourite painting. haha.

Hahaha, loved that one too, one of mi favorite scenes. Mia punching Hank during sex is great too, Oh! and the church scenes, AND Hank in the supermarket commenting on wine AAANNNDDD...OK, I enjoy every fucking scene on that show (literally) :D

  7. Well, I disagree. What happened in the film is what actually happened in Mexico at the time. Now you may think that doesn't make for good movie material, but how is this different from, say "Dances with wolves", "The mission", "The last of the Mohicans" or any number of films portraying brutal societies?

Basically, what I'm asking is what's the fuzz? If you didn't like it, that's fine by me, but "cheap torture porn"? Come on.

There's no fuzz, I just thought the movie was crap. I don't think Apocalypto can be compared to Dances with Wolves, Last of the Mohicans or The Mission simply because those films used violence as a resource to tell a story but didn't revolve around it. If I wanted to see guys getting beated, kidnapped, abused and eventually killed I'd turn to the horror section of my video club and pick Hostel or something along the line and while I love horror movies I don't like torture porn and Apocalypto, in my opinion, belongs to that genre. Now I don't want to make a big deal about it because theres no reason to but what can I say, I think this is a crappy film and as I already mentioned, I don't have a problem with violent films, just with crappy ones.

  8. Really? I thought APOCALYPTO was cheap torture porn (with a little bit of Rambo towars the end) disguised as historical artsy drama.

Why? There's way less torture in that one than in, say, Die Hard. In fact there is only one scene which really has "torture" in it, and that is the human sacrifices on the pyramids. But hey, when the theme of your film is the Aztecs, it's kind of hard to not have that in there...

Die Hard may be violent but the subject is not treated as morbidly as in Apocalypto. The attack on the main character's village, with all it's brutality, and subsequent journey of the defeated people through the jungle -which I do consider a method of torture- reminds me of scenes out of movies like The Hills Have Eyes. Now, I don't have a problem with violence on cinema, but what bothers me is the way the movie was sold (historical action-drama) and what you got for your money (mondo-like movie spoken in a foreign language).

  9. EL DÍA DE LA BESTIA (DAY OF THE BEAST) is awesome, know where I can find UNA DE ZOMBIS in non PAL format?

The soundtrack, the soundtrack of El dia de la Bestia is fucking good. About Una de zombies, I don't have the slightiest idea. I am not much into spanish cinema, sadly.

Me neither but I came acroos that one and it really made an impression. Highly recommended, laughed my ass off, haven't been able to find the DVD anywhere though.

I'm going to have to see Juno now, aren't I? Bugger.

In other news, if you ever get a chance, go see the Norwegian/Sami film "The Kautokeino rebellion". It really is great stuff.

Also, I was positively surprised by Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto" when I caught it on video. Not bad at all, really.

Really? I thought APOCALYPTO was cheap torture porn (with a little bit of Rambo towars the end) disguised as historical artsy drama.

THE ASSASINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD, very slow paced but more than worthy of praise. Pitt and Affleck shine through it. Can't understand why it wasn't nominated for best picture at the Oscars. A+

  10. CALIFORNICATION, best series ever!

Hank Moody (Duchovny), a self-destructive-chain smoker-hard drinking-drug abusing-sex addict -writer out of job in L.A. is the most clever and funny character of contemporary T.V.

I remember the ads for that show made it look like an entertaining diversion, never got around to actually watching it though.

Give the pilot a chance, you can catch the opening scenes here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wy-zTgCW0es let me now what you thought.

  11. Hey Spain,is Perdita Derango alot like Lynch's Wild at Heart?I know it's a prequel and there both written by Gifford, but is it a similar type of movie would you say?

Well, I haven't seen that Wild at Heart. The english title of Perdita Durango is Perdita Durango-Dance with the Devil or something like that... The only thing I know is that Alex de la Iglesia (director of the movie) has a style much more violent and crude than Lynch. Haven't you seen The Day of the Beast?

EL DÍA DE LA BESTIA (DAY OF THE BEAST) is awesome, know where I can find UNA DE ZOMBIS in non PAL format?

  12. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.- I know this was the big winner at the Oscars and that it was praised by the critic but I can't say the film met my expectations maybe because they were too high. It's delightful to watch such good performances by Jones, Bardem and Brolin but the plot just didnt do it for me. I'll give it an A for the cast's work.
