  1. I know of many, many ex-Labour people who have gone over the the BNP.

I am ashamed to say my Aunt, Uncle and cousins are amongst them.

The 'traditional Labour' to BNP jump is not so hard to comprehend when you consider the sort of people who traditionally vote Labour, they didn't do it out of a love for left wing politics, they voted Labour because they stood up for them. Labour was there to stand up for their them.

The Labour party no longer does this and the ignorant, uneducated, racist, bigotted masses have no problems at all with going for the BNP instead.

Correct me if I am wrong but the areas with high BNP voting seem to all be traditional Labour areas as well. I really think it is mostly a labour to BNP switch. If the Conservatives need to defect they would be more likely to go for UKIP. I have not seen a Tory, or even a marginal area get a huge number of BNP voters yet, as far as I remember.

This and this are good examples of what I mean. These are 2001 and 2005 general election results showing Labour losses and BNP gains. A lot of the BNP votes must come from Labour losses.

There is no real need to panic though, the BNP will never have a wide enough appeal to get large enough to really cause huge trouble. This should not stop the fight against their incitement of hate and violence though. Just two weeks ago I had to make someone understand what he actually really did by voting BNP once, and I think I got through... a lot of people don't fully appreciate what they are voting for, and they are the ones we all need to get to so the pond scum who run the BNP are forced off the agenda completely when election results are discussed.

  2. Empowerment is about choice not positive role models though.

I think the ideal thing is for all people to do just what they want, and if that is to wear a bikini and writhe about in a hip hop video covered in oil then fair enough, they shouldn't get grief for it. They shouldn't be viewed as letting down other women.

  4. *twitch*

I still have dissertation nightmares.... I handed it in nearly four years ago now and I still sometimes wake up panicking about it.

I still have no clue how I did a 12,000 word dissertation on J. Edgar Hoover & The FBI during the Kennedy Administration over five days because I left it far too late. I do remember making someone take my modem and refuse to give it back until I showed them a complete dissertation.

How I managed to get a degree is something I still wonder about..... so it what results I would have got if I had actually worked hard.

  5. I seem to remember no one dressed up, most people didn't even come, we all tried to sneak alcohol in and Daniel De'Ath killed a fox that was hit by a car with a brick.

    Coolest name...ever.

    That is all

I know. Damn him... I just got stuck with 'Christopher' and a weird surname I don't put online because people I don't want to find me would be just one google search away if I did.

  6. My school organised a really shit disco thing in a really stupid location out of town. This was in 1995.

I seem to remember no one dressed up, most people didn't even come, we all tried to sneak alcohol in and Daniel De'Ath killed a fox that was hit by a car with a brick.

That's about it for my 'prom'.... I certainly didn't have a date because everyone was of the opinion that I was a deranged weirdo. They probably had a point though, I'll give them that.

My school kicked people out at 16 though, so maybe thats why it was so shit. To do A Levels you had to go to the local college. Maybe ones that have a 6th form make more effort.

  7. The 2nd and 3rd Matrix movies reminded of me watching a friend play Playstation games.

    Only far less entertaining.

The first was only interesting on the surface too.

My favourite bit was when Neo was talking to 'The Source' and he said 'no way' and I REALLY wanted to 'The Source' to reply 'Yes way Ted'.

It's a bad sign when you have to come up with ways to amuse yourself when watching movies really.....

  8. I've been really rubbish at managing my time of late.... So have a recent photo as compensation for me skiving off for a couple of months. (I had no idea it was that long... honest guv')

    me2006.jpg

Only slightly filtered in photoshop for contrast due to my camera making anyone look like a mutant if I use the flash.

  9. You cannot have a law against 'misrepresenting history'. That is pure lunacy.

Apart from blatant lies the opinions and preconceptions of the historian making any statement are paramount to what is deemed important. Some will find certain things important in a subject and others will focus on entirely different things. Neither is misrepresenting anything by giving a perspective. If it happened then no matter what the context or bias of the writer then it is perfectly acceptable.

A law like that would kill the study of history. There is no one context or framework for deciding what is important and what is not. History is not a science and there are no definitive, concrete answers to any of it.

  10. What's wrong with having some smoking establishments or smoking areas in certain licenced premises?

Because it's a farce. The divisions never properly filter the air, so those of us who choose not to be unhealthy and stinky end up unhealthy and stinky anyway. Those who do smoke have so dulled their senses that they don't realize how noticeable and offensive it is to the rest of the world, and that's still often the case in so-called "no smoking" sections.

Well, then legislate for what actually constitutes a proper safe smoking room for places then. It's that simple. Pubs and other places should at least get the chance to bring in the facilities to cater for smokers without affecting any staff or other patrons.

It won't be cheap and most won't bother, but it would be much fairer. A blanket total ban without even allowing a safe smoking area is just wrong.

I don't smoke, I just think people should be allowed to if it does not bother others. I am actually more bothered by passive smoking outside waiting for a bus than anywhere else and that is not being legislated against. I still have to stand inline getting smoke blown into my face....

  11. I think the reason the USA gets a lot of vocal criticism from people is because there is no one out there who can actually really do a damned thing about what the USA does.

The UN? The US government has nothing but contempt for it.

Human Rights Conventions? They find ways around it.

The plain fact of the matter is that nothing on this planet has the power to do anything but complain quietly about anything the USA does. The only real weapon against the shitty things done by the US government is grassroots activism and making sure everyone knows what is going on.

That might upset some people in the USA but it is the only thing anyone can do. I've been known to speak out quite strongly about a lot of things the USA does, more so than things in Korea, Iran, Afghansistan etc....

Why? Basically because the USA should know better. Torture, indefinate imprisonment without charge, napalm, overthrowing governments in other countries just because you don't like them, land mines, not giving a shit about global warming etc etc etc. It is all unacceptable and an educated democracy should know better and lead by example and not resort to such things.

As for the people, about the same as any other country. Some [over-used word]s, some cool people.

  12. As far as I see it the USA has two real choices in an election.

Evil and Diet Evil. I am not surprised some people don't bother really. Maybe if there were real alternatives or possibly even if the Democrats put someone forward who is not a embarassing fuckwit. Kerry made me cringe. Seriously.

It's getting similar in this country. The lines between parties are blurring here and you just wonder what you are actually going to achieve by putting your cross next to anyone on the ballot.

That's the biggest problem though. Not enough people do get involved with the few good candidates there are and the independents who want real change. We can't not be involved and just expect that the crooks will stop being crooks we have to get our hands and fists and fight.

Activists are always the minority, that's my point. Most people are more concerned about what is happening in soaps and drinking beer. They don't really care unless their taxes go up.

Until people get motivated to take action on mass then the current system wins. People also need to have the inevitability of it having to be a choice between one of the two main parties educated out of them. Democracy is a system that could work for the people, but it doesn't right now in the USA or the UK.

It's a marketing thing. Like the way most people think of what cola to drink in terms of 'Pepsi or Coke' and don't even consider the existance of an alternative.

I think democracy is a failure at the moment, because 99.99% of people take it for granted. The big parties in most countries have everyone convinced a vote for anyone without an established party brand under their name is a waste.

It could happen very easily. In 2008 someone could stand in the US presidential election and say 'Enough of this bullshit, it is time to put people first' and everyone could put their cross by his name. That is how easy a revolution is in a democracy, in theory. It just won't happen unless he happens to have 'Republican' or 'Democrat' under it. They have the system rigged just by promoting preconceptions, and most people don't even see it.

  13. But that only applies to when they draw cocks on things.

Which leads me onto my next question. Why do boys do that?

Thats a good point.... I've never seen a girls excercise book with girlbits drawn on it.

Can't say I ever did it though personally....

  14. As far as I see it the USA has two real choices in an election.

  15. The line-up for April Whitby this year is just shit really.

I wouldn't mind seeing Swarf and Zombina and the Skeletones but they are hardly worth going up to Whitby for. For the so-called top goth event in the UK they really don't get the acts they should.

I am involved with a rather low-key small even in Leeds the weekend before and I think we have the better acts by a long way. None of the stalls and stuff though of course, I just think Jo should spend a bit more of the extortionate ticket prices she gets from overselling the venue and packing people in like veal calves on some bands people would kill their own grandmother to see.

I should probably have posted this in the rants thread....

I don't know what it's like for ya'll across the pond, but over here it's just not a good time right now for Goth, Metal, Industrial, or just about any kind of rock and roll.

It's not great here at the moment all told.... but there are still some ace bands about.
