  1. I'd rate Williams as possibly the best artist working in mainstream Western comics at the moment, and his work on Promethea is the best he's ever done. Revelatory, visionary stuff - just what the writing required.

I'd have to agree with that. His current stuff for 7 Soldiers is great.

And Sebastian O. was really good for a 3 issue miniseries.... A lot of themes/ideas that Morrison would later build on, plus all the steampunk and thinly veiled Oscar Wilde allusions.

  2. In the immediate aftermath of Reeve's death, there was a lot of talk about the "heroic" way he coped with his disability. Byrne objected to this, feeling that such use of the word demeaned real heroism, and illustrated his point by pointing out that, so far as we were aware, Reeve could have been begging his family to kill him every day until his death, and we would have been none the wiser. He said this the day after Reeve died, which, whatever you think about the point he was trying to make, demonstrates a truly magnificent grasp of sensitivity and timing.

Up there with that is his more recent speech at Will Eisner's memorial ceremony, at which he suggested that, since Eisner had never missed a deadline during his working career, a fitting tribute to his memory would be for DC and Marvel to fire every writer and artist who submitted their work late. He actually stood up at the ceremony and said this, and by most accounts was greeted with appalled silence, and subsequently ignored.

    Wow. Just... wow.

  3. Why the Lakers might actually be the "best of the rest" (the rest= all teams outside of the Pistons, Heat, Mavs, Spurs, and Suns):

Phillip can coach. Phillip can coach really well. Phillip can coach almost better than anybody in the second half of the season and in the playoffs.

The players are starting to realize their potential. Perennial stiffs Odom, Walton, Vujacec, Parker, George, and Brown have just woken up. Paricularly Odom and Brown who are vital to the team's chances of success.

Kobe can pass. If he continues to shoot less (even if it's only 5 or 6 fewer shots per game) and his teammates get him those assists, it makes the Lakers infinitely better.

They will make the playoffs. At the beginning of the season I predicted they would climb as high as the 6th seed. It's still viable, especially in light of their recent wins against the Pistons, Hornets, and Spurs, all on the road.

You don't want to face this team in the first round. With Kobe playing inspired the Lakers could easily steal a series from a superior team.

  4. I really didn't like that much at all, soldier.  :glare:

We'll see who goes to the play offs and who doesn't.

The thing I'm worried about is Kobe's 81 point game ruining Chauncey's shot at league MVP. 81 point game or not, Lakers just don't have it goin' on and will be lucky to make the play offs. So then how valuable a plaer is he really? To not be able to use your talent to lift your team?

Bah, I'm just ranting in the wrong thread. But you started it!

Ahahahaha! Agreed, let's go find the NBA thread and give El Jefe back his NCAA thread.....

  5. I'll ceck it out but college ball is out of my league. There's so many teams I get confused. GO BLUE!

What Lou said, especially the GO BLUE! (although they're on the bubble right now.....)

I'll still do it, I know a little about college hoops. GO BRUINS! as well.

**Oh, and how did you boys like my Lakers beating the Pistons and absolutely throttling the Spurs in San Antonio?!**

  6. The problem with modern socialism/communism is the same for any political system: corruption. Socialism under corrupt rule can restrict an individual's freedom more than the free market/republic we pretend isn't run by corporations. It's this invisible corporate authority, however, which pushes me further to the left than I've been since my "political philosophy up for grabs" days.

    Exactly my sentiments.

  7. No I'm not. (At least I don't think I am.)

    Who is LM Rosa?

Now, I don't really know, but I have a guess..... LM Rosa is a Portugese internet forums poster who is particularly acidic. I've encountered him on Barbelith and I believe he was once a member here?

    Am I close?

  8. Finished Vol.1 of Seven Soldiers of Victory.

Excellent start to a title as usual for Mr. Morrison.

And it lives up (thus far) to everything he said it would be in his introduction.

    Up next: Sebastian O.

  9. Which is why it's a campy cult classic. It's so fun, and so bad that it's good. Raimi's evolved considerably since then anyway. Afterall, you do love his Spider-Man movies.

Did you get a chance to watch Dazed & Confused yet?

  10. Eh, opinions are like assholes........

Edit: I wrote that before Mark's post.

Good points, Mark, particularly the last one. Still, it's worth reading at least once. For me, it worked in much the same way Polanski's Ninth Gate did---- the writing style/storytelling reflected the the themes and ideas of the story itself. And the amount of ideas in the series is staggering, which is also the point: life is overwhelming and there are many things just beyond our comprehension. Anyway, I'll gush about somewhere else.

  11. This just in... We're taking this thread to a new level. The producers have noticed that a lot of you are wanting more slots for more of you favs, well make it your top 25. We now return to your regularly scheduled posting.

  12. I know you were just answering Christian's question, I guess I just didn't want you to 'cause I felt it would've led to a silly argument. I don't have a lot of patience for religious zealots, but I also don't have much patience for those who seek to dissuade people of their faith. It often seems selfish, mean, and shows a lack of understanding/acceptance for others (NOT that I'm accusing Christian or ANYONE on this board of being guilty of this). Call it a preemptive strike on your behalf (not that you wanted one).

You weren't so bad in The Princess Bride, yourself.

  13. Charlie-You're also not giving us a reason why you have faith in God and believe in Christianity. I need to hear why you believe in God and are a Christian. I want to hear you reasons!

Oh, geez, where to start. I am a Christian because I believe in the historicity of Jesus, the authenticity of the Gospels; I have chosen to take the leap of faith and believe that Jesus is the son of God. I'm not sure that will satisfy you. Does it? Do you need me to be more specific or to expand on something?

The real question Charlie, is do you feel the need to be more specific or expand on what you said.

You have faith, that's all that matters and should be answer enough for anyone. Who are we to question your beliefs, even if we don't agree with them?

  14. You're better off buying "The Invisibles" in Trades.

I'd also keep away from "1602" until you've read a lot more Neil Gaiman. I can forgive Neil for "1602" because I know how damn good a writer he actually is. If one of your earliest tastes of Gaiman is "1602" you might mistakenly believe that's the best he's capable of.

Right, but I'm recommending it to a person who's read mostly Marvel titles, particularly X-Men stuff. I think it'd be a good "baby step" before he moves on to Sandman or any of Neil's more sophisiticated work.

The Invisibles are great in trades, very well divided. I only mention the single issue option because I found them online at a very cheap price (as little as a $1.00 per issue). But I suppose one can find the trades online cheaply as well.

Well i have only really read marvel so might be ok for me...

Exactly. Plus, the bigger stars of the Marvel Universe are in "1602" including the X-Men. I think you'll enjoy it.

(I make these recommendations as someone who was in the same boat as you. I read primarily Marvel stuff in my teens, mostly X-Men related titles. It wasn't until this past year when I returned to comics that I branched out from the X-Men and other Marvel books. I found "1602" to be a good introduction to Gaiman's writing and have since moved on to this more accomplished works in HB, Sandman, etc.)

  15. Yep! Howard Mackie called himself "X" and wrote "The Brotherhood". A comic that started out with some promise, but very quickly became laughable!

Really?! I thought the author was unknown and that speculation pointed to Milligan. Interesting.........

  16. I'm also curious how many have read the link I posted about wages for housework, as it doesn't focus on child-rearing, yet many her have siezed this idea as purely "I won't have a kid if I don't get paid for it."

Was the link ignored, mis-read, or mis-interpreted?

I could answer that for you, but I'd be ostracized from the boards.......

  17. Pardon me if I'm wrong, but I think in regular football you can't touch the ball with hands... right?

That answer is true, but only outside America. Here, football refers to the NFL (you know, the "Super Bowl" and all that). And Arena Football is a more "extreme" version of the NFL. Jay's post is accurate; it's a smaller field with padded boards/walls for boundaries (like in ice hockey or indoor soccer). There are fewer player per team and generally a lot more hitting/tackling (since no one can run out of bounds to end a play). The players also play both sides of the ball (offense and defense) which is known as "Iron Man Football" in the States. In the NFL, you'll never see a QB line up on defense. In Arena Football I think it's mandatory that 90% of your team plays both offense and defense. There are also some other silly differences I won't go into.

Jay's also right about the "fastest growing sport" argument. In reality, soccer and NASCAR are the fastest growing sports in all the ways that count.

So maybe in 10 or 15 years we'll actually have a decent soccer league.
