Kind of would have liked to have seen Ellis working with a different artist just because I feel Hitch's art has waned a bit these days in its quality, but hey, Ellis (hopefully) will put out a Batman tale worth reading.
(though of these twelve issues, how many do you suppose will be entirely a single fight scene stretched out to 20-something pages with minimal dialogue)

Two new Black Label books by Jeff Lemire have been announced: Joker with Andrea Sorrentino and The Question with Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz. The Question seems like it'll be worth checking out but honestly Joker anything is almost an anathema to me at this point even with Lemire.

I also trust him not to/hope he will not spend an entire year on the thrilling conspiracies and adventures of the djinn as well.

Si Spurrier is set to write a new Constantine book starting this October, with a one-shot drawn by Marcio Takara that will transition to an ongoing in November with Aaron Campbell on art.
Well it was only a matter of time before DC took John's corpse of their cancelled closet and shocked him back to life. The good news is that at least DC's put a promising writer (and one off my wishlist at that!) behind the wheels though obviously as history of this character shows, a talented writer may not always translate to a good Hellblazer story.

QuoteBURBANK, CA (July 9, 2019)—Last year DC launched the Sandman Universe, a series of books curated by legendary author Neil Gaiman, bringing in new creative voices to expand the mythos of the Dreaming. Today DC announces a new addition to this universe starring the infamous John Constantine. It all begins October 30 with a special one-shot issue, THE SANDMAN UNIVERSE PRESENTS HELLBLAZER #1 from writer Simon Spurrier and artist Marcio Takara, followed by the ongoing series JOHN CONSTANTINE, HELLBLAZER from Spurrier and artist Aaron Campbell this November.
“Year One was just the start. Now you get to inhabit the worlds, books, and houses we built for you,” says Gaiman. “I was thrilled when I was told that John Constantine—the original, demon-haunted one who first showed up in SWAMP THING’s “American Gothic” story—is coming back to his murky and dangerous roots. More magic and more darkness and not a few gods and dreams are here for you to explore.”
“HELLBLAZER’s the one title I’ve always aspired to write. Ever since John Constantine slunk from Alan Moore’s brain into SWAMP THING, dropping secrets like grenades, bewildering vegetables, and spinning mysteries, I’ve been drawn to his misadventures with eerie gravity,” says Spurrier. “John Constantine is the cynic’s magician: a man of selfish drives and cataclysmic self-knowledge, who tries to do the right thing in spite of himself, in spite of the cost, in spite of the vile and violent world he occupies. He may not be the hero we need, but he’s definitely the bastard we deserve.
“In this new era, everything is different. Everyone and everything he loved and knew is dead or despises him. Alone, angry, older, and wiser, he beholds a world that is clearlygoing insane. The shadows are deeper than ever. So he does what he does. He breathes smoke. He grins to himself. And he goes to work.”

David Lapham of Stray Bullets fame uploaded a PDF containing the full issue of unused art Bill Sienkiewicz did for his "City of Crime" story before Sienkiewicz was unable to commit to the full run and had to be replaced.
From what I remember of City of Crime, it was a story that started strongly but after the halfway point had become something of a mess. I suppose that if Bill Sienkiewicz had done the art though, it wouldn't be languishing in obscurity.

Marvel's been putting out new big trades for some of Aaron's other runs like Thor and Ghost Rider, and now that Disney has all of Marvel's movie rights under one roof again, I wouldn't be too surprised if they get around to his X-Men works as well.
(if you don't mind the risk of purchasing used copies online, they still seem to be available at cheap prices on Amazon)

I wonder who could pull off the unisex ambiguity of Desire.
On a side note, Netflix has announced that their future teen-and-below oriented original content will be excluding smoking. Though I'm sure Sandman will be aiming for the adults, I look forward to the possibility of another TV Constantine who can't smoke onscreen.

In news that randomly dropped on a Sunday, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Netflix and WB are in the process of developing a Sandman series for the streaming service after several failed attempts at turning it into a movie over the decades.
Allan Heinberg is slated to act as showrunner, with Neil Gaiman and David Goyer as the executive producers.
(honestly the notion of a live-action Sandman in any form just generates total apathy for me at this point)

https://ew.com/books/2019/06/26/joe-hill-dc-comics-hill-house/
Even with Vertigo dead, DC isn't letting up on their smaller imprints, as they've just announced that Joe Hill is writing and overseeing books for a horror themed line called Hill House.
The books, which are all limited series, are:
Plunge by Joe Hill and an unrevealed artist
Basketful of Heads by Joe Hill and art by Leomacs
The Low, Low Woods by Carmen Machado and art by Dani
Daphne Byrne by Laura Marks and art by Kelley Jones
The Dollhouse Family by Mike Carey and art by Peter Gross.
All the books seem to be original properties and non-capeshit works.
If nothing else, it's nice to see one of the Big Two giving Mike Carey some work again along with announcing some non-superhero books. And given that Joe Hill is a full-time writer with presumably no rock star music career on the side, maybe he'll actually get his books out on time unlike a certain other DC imprint overseer?

Well, what's rumor is now reality: DC will officially be closing Vertigo (along with its two newer young-adult and kids oriented imprints of DC Ink and Zoom) and rebranding their books with a new age rating system in 2020. Black Label will survive as the name of DC's rating for its 17-and-up aimed books, as will the smaller creator-curated imprints such as Way's Young Animals.
I'll do my best to remember Vertigo's highs, rather than what it became at the very end.
(hours later, I find out that DC has announced several upcoming graphic novels for the young adult and kid readers, among them what sounds like a kid Constantine novel by Ryan North, who wrote Marvel's Squirrel Girl comic. I wonder if this will end up with some kid enjoying it, asking their parents to get them more Constantine, and Mom & Dad accidentally gift 'em a copy of Ennis' "knifed in the nards" Hellblazer or Ellis' "you kids are getting shot cause you wanna be shot" Hellblazer )

Finally, we'll learn how to say the N-word in Klingon.

Well in the recent news for DC, Darick Robertson confirmed on his Twitter that he'll be drawing Constantine soon. But it's just for a one-shot spin off of DC's "Someone Just Read Marvel Zombies" DCeased mini.

Some Marvel stuff shown off at this E3:
I was not expecting to see Elsa Bloodstone ever pop up in a video game.

I guess you could say that at least one swamp got drained during the Trump years.

Bleeding Cool is passing around a rumor that DC is finally putting Vertigo out of its misery.
(I'm guessing if this comes to pass, Vertigo's name will be kept around for stuff like Sandman trades, but we won't see any new books which is not much of a loss at this point)

Man that does look good. Good enough for me to buy a subscription to yet another streaming service? Not likely.
I think DCU does have a free trial. So you could wait for whenever Swamp Thing wraps up (episodes for the DCU shows are released weekly and Swamp Thing is scheduled for ten in total I believe), sign up for the free trial to binge Swamp Thing, then cancel when you're done.

The next spin-off in The Wild Storm is launching this August: a six-issue mini for Wildcats that he'll be writing with Ramon Villalobos on art.
(Unlike Michael Cray, he appears to be handling full writing duties for Wildcats)
https://www.newsarama.com/45207-warren-ellis-resurrects-wildcats-in-august.html
O/U on this either being about two issues of story (a generous estimate) stretched out into six or six barely connected done-in-ones?

In much smaller news, DC's trying to get a few extra bucks out of the fanboys by adding a new story by Alan Grant (with Scott McDaniel on art) to the hardcover deluxe edition of Detective Comics #1000.
This would be Grant's first writing for DC in how many years? They cancel the trades reprinting his Detective run and leave him out of the celebration the first time around, but I guess it's nice to see someone at DC acknowledging the role he played in Batman history.

Well, another X-Men relaunch was to be expected since Marvel was going to make an event out of Hickman's return and all, but has it even been a full year since the last one before this one was announced?
-
So it's been confirmed that this project is an 80-page anthology where every creative team attached contributes one page of story...
https://www.newsarama.com/45127-marvel-comics-1000-revisits-80-years-of-marvel-history.html
Well, if this is CB Cebulski-sama's plan to create the next Marvel comic to sell one million, I'm gonna have to doubt it.
Though given that the overarching story in Marvel Comics #1000 is overseen by Al Ewing, maybe some of it might not totally be a waste of trees?

Jeff Lemire is teasing a project he'll be writing/drawing with Marvel this August. (Didn't he decide to quit working for Big Two to focus on his creator-owned stuff not too long ago?)
Bleeding Cool posted similar teases revealing Joe Hill/Mike Allred and JMS (didn't he retire from comics?)/Ed McGuinness on other unrevealed August 2019 Marvel titles.
EDIT: according to another BC article, these creatives and more are part of an anthology called Marvel Comics #1000 (totally not trying to ape Action and Detective 1000 here!) to celebrate Marvel's 80th anniversary.
Wonder if this is meant to be Marvel's next smash hit announcement that Marvel EIC CB Cebulski was teasing on his twitter, and if Akira Yoshida-san will be contributing a story?

Just a head's up for fans of Jeff Lemire:

Brian Azzarello to write... wait for it... the Birds of Prey. Yes. You read that right. The all-female team. And now featuring Harley Quinn, a character with the accents and slang that you know Azzarello just loves to write. Though the last time Azzarello got to write a DC superheroine book, it turned out to be his best Big Two work by far, so maybe this might not be an utter disaster? (the book seems to be here mostly to tie-in with the upcoming movie, using the same line-up)
