John Constantine's lost weekend in New York City was fun, but London's where his heart is -- only a pissed-off demon and a curse on his soul stand in his way. Even Constantine's questionable ethics are pushed to the limit when he puts eight million souls on the line to get what he wants...

Gerard Way of Umbrella Academy fame (plus the band My Chemical Romance) gets his own DC publishing imprint and his imprint will be publishing a new Shade book plus "Cave Carson Has A Cybernetic Eye" and "Mother Panic" in addition to his take on Doom Patrol.

Hopefully the release of a new Shade book will also lead to the trades collecting the rest of Milligan's series.

  3. On a related note to the discussion of DC's (lack of?) talent last page, DC has just announced a writers and artist workshop programs. It's probably the closest there ever will be to the company accepting unsolicited writing submissions again, although the rules for application stress that you can't include any ideas involving DC characters in your application and completion of the workshop doesn't guarantee a writing position at DC afterwards.

The writer's workshop application period starts on May 1st. Anyone got a resume of previously published comics or novels that wanna take a longshot?

    Does a comic pitch count?

Hmm, the application guidelines say nothing against general comic pitches or ideas for comics using Marvel characters...

  4. Finally found an image of the reveal:

Looks like the good 'ol trenchcoat is back, and it also seems like John got rid of that awful haircut Tynion/Doyle/Rossmo gave him.

But eh, not too big on them calling the book "The Hellblazer" like John's some sorta kinda lame d-list event cannon fodder superhero and that's his moniker. Just call the book Hellblazer Vol 2.

  6. DC did snag two potential up-and-comers with exclusive contracts: Tom King and Steve Orlando (he's got a GLAAD I think but I don't know if he'd fit John)

But the only actual big names (eg peoples who could probably sell a book with their name alone) they have atm seem to be Geoff Johns and Scott Snyder. The other two big names that were there at the start of New 52, Morrison and Azzarello, don't look like they'll be doing any regular DC work in the future. Though I think there still are some writers who wrote a cult-favorite series or some indie with press like Tim Seeley and Dan Abnett working on books atm, though. And Tom Taylor, who wrote that Injustice Constantine, is still working for DC as well.

It probably is some magnitude of bad management regarding DC, whatever compels them to let Marvel snag so many names with buzz from them with exclusive contracts. Rick Remender, Jeff Lemire, Charles Soule, Jason Aaron, etc. There also seem to be some industry veterans from the 90s/early 00s who have had such a bad time with DC editorial that they've gone over to Marvel for the long long haul, such as James Robinson, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid, etc. which leaves DC with "90s talent" like Scott Lobdell and whoever Bob Harras seems to know. It's probably not a coincidence that Harras is there at the top and Howard Mackie and Tom DeFalco wrote DC books at some point. In fact, wasn't Paul Jenkins' experience with New 52 editorial so bad that he went exclusively independent for his work? And I think Ed Brubraker has gone full-indie for the moment as well.

I'm hoping that Rebirth is not just "slap some new paint" on our characters sort of rebirth, but an actual rebirth for management within the company. The ip farms can only carry you so far if there's no talent to back them up.

  7. Isn't 50 Shades just a reworked lawyer-friendly version of the author's Twilight fanfiction? That would go to explain the quality of writing and the appeal to certain demographics...

I, in general, try to keep most of the books that I own. I still think I have even my old childhood Goosebumps lying or scattered around throughout the place.

  8. No wonder why Batman's so into women like Catwoman and Talia Al Ghul. All the tight leather, guns, whips, and druggings... they must turn his knees and much more into melted ice cream.

  9. DC signs three more exclusive contracts: http://www.dccomics....talent-trifecta

Steve Orlando, writer of DC's Midnighter as well as Image's Undertow and Virgil

Plus artists Doc Shaner and Jesus Merino

For now, the only thing we've learned officially I think is that Jim Lee is drawing a Suicide Squad book written by Rob Williams.

I wonder how far behind schedule that will fall before it gets cancelled?

Jim Lee's Suicide Squad issues will probably join the 11th issue of All-Star Batman & Robin and Grant Morrison's WildCATS in his nightmares.

  10. More details about what Rebirth entails will be announced at WonderCon on the 26th. I don't think it'll bring back the Post-Crisis timeline, but I think that it'll be more akin to Infinite Crisis - it doesn't undo the current continuity but it retcons in a bunch of new history to bring back fan-favorites that were wiped out or altered by the New 52.

For now, the only thing we've learned officially I think is that Jim Lee is drawing a Suicide Squad book written by Rob Williams.

  11. One thing that stood out to me for the first arc was that one issue (the Heckblazer cover one?) where Constantine was wearing the trench-coat again for some reason, that he hasn't worn since, for whatever reason.

There is a bit of a feeling that the opening arc was a story that could've been told in like one or two issues, but stretched out for longer than it needed to be, to do I dunno some world-building for John that hasn't been utilized much in the book after the initial appearance and that'll all probably just get ignored when Rebirth happens. Probably would've been the same "meh" story regardless, but a weak arc ending probably leaves less of a sour taste when it takes two issues to get there than five.

  12. I guess it would be cool to see what sort of time-travel hijinks Constantine would get into. Get George Washington hooked on some pagan rituals, kick Stalin in the crotch and run away, accidentally get Pete Best fired from the Beatles, the like.

Although I wouldn't prefer CW go the anthology route regarding Legends. Every season is a self-contained story with a different "Legends" theme and cast, retitle it Legends of Darkness or Legends of Magic or something. Have Madame Xanadu or Doc Fate in the Rip Hunter role of "person who gathers everyone together" with Constantine as one of her recruits.

  13. I didn't know exactly where to put this, but:

For fans of Stephen King's Dark Tower, the film is happening according to the author himself: https://twitter.com/...674793145159680

Idris Elba to play Roland and Matthew McConaughey to play Randall Flagg/The Man in Black. I'm hoping they use the opp. with MM's RF to launch an entire Stephen King cinematic shared multiverse that'll put all these cinematic shared universes to shame if this project does get off the ground.

Now on the topic of those books, I read through the first four a few summers ago but I never got around to reading the last three. But from what I hear, the quality plummeted and the series had a very weak ending. You know, that kind of sums up my feelings about The Stand - the book became much less interesting to me after King shifted from destroying the world to rebuilding it and the book just started to drag. Or maybe I'm just a horrid person who gets off societal detonation.

  14. I suppose we could try mailing DC editorial en-masse to give us HB fans what we want but then again they'd probably interpret this as a sign to put Azzarello on the book or give us a Gemma series written by Milligan because

um... they worked on the old HB series, so yeah, fans would probably like this - DC editorial

  15. http://cbverse.com/2...niverse-rumors/

A new batch of rumors, with Justice League Dark included. According to these rumors, Norman Reedus of TWD tv show is being considered for the role of Deadman, after talks with Jim Carrey failed and the director of the Evil Dead remake is the top choice for director.

As always, take it with a grain of salt (perhaps more than just a grain since the only source for these rumors listed is a twitter account)
